I’ve lived in Chile for almost 15 years and travel regularly to the coast from Santiago and I’ve never been asked for any form of ID when boarding a bus to Valpo, not sure why that was the experience in your case. As for the Metro I’d disagree with classifying it as “dangerous” for tourists, although taking basic precautions to avoid pickpockets is recommended for anyone riding the Metro here. One tip that I would recommend when buying bus tickets is asking for “Ida y Vuelta” which is essentially buying a return ticket to and from Valparaiso, this is actually cheaper than buying tickets individually for each leg of the trip. If you are not sure about the time that you want to return to Santiago, you can ask for “vuelta en blanco” which is an open ticket, with the time and seat to be confirmed at the ticket counter before boarding. Finally, across the bay from Valparaiso is another beautiful city called Viña Del Mar which can be accessed with a quick 10|-15 min metro train ride from Valparaiso. A return ticket from Valparaiso to Santiago is also valid for use from the Viña Del Mar bus station, so a multi leg day trip is possible.
Very nice. I like the fact that you mentioned about security of personal items. I’ve always believed to watch your back as tourists are always open target. I would enjoy going there. Very informative. Thank you 🙏

Que viaje más hermoso a este bello Puerto de Valparaíso soy de Puerto Montt cuando viajo a Santiago dedico un día especial para visitar esta bellísima ciudad que me encanta
I'm waiting on my retirement VISA for Chile right now. This is a flying by the seat of my pants move. I'll get to Santiago, setup a home base then start traveling to coastal towns to choose my final landing spot.
going to Santiago in less than 20 days, thanks for the advice on the bus to Valpo; I speak spanish, thankfully but it's always good to get an idea of what it will be like.
You mentioned that several locals told you the subway can be dangerous for tourists, but I’ve never heard any tourists who have been to Chile or Chileans saying that. Why is it specifically dangerous for tourists and not Chileans? And what did they say specifically is dangerous about taking the subway? If you’re going to make a statement like this to people who are planning to visit Chile, I think you should elaborate more. I understand if many people told you that, you believe them because they’re locals and you’re visiting. Don’t mean any ill will, just genuinely trying to understand.
Gringos,White Europeans are not liked very much from Mexico to the South American tip, they dont blend in and are loud, reasons why local thieves love to target them unless u can speak fluent Spanish and can blend in.
Hi there, I'm in Santiago right now and am trying to figure out how to get to Valparaiso. I wanted to ask if you knew if Chilean cash can be used for Turbus fare or if we need metro card? Also, is this the Universidad Station you were all talking about: Av. Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins 3750, Santiago, Estación Central, Región Metropolitana? Thank you for the video!!!
Hi Gustavo! Great questions! Yes, you can pay with Chilean cash at the ticket window. And yes, the address you have listed is the bus station we used! Wishing you a fun trip in Valparaiso! How long are you there for? 😃
@@SharingtheRoad Perfect, thank you so much for the speedy response. I may try and go tomorrow, head out in the morning. I'm in Santiago until the 31st, but have heard such amazing things about Valparaiso that I have to go. Do you by any chance have activities, food, etc, that you recommend for both or either Valparaiso or Santiago? I've been having a somewhat hard time moving around but am sure there are some gems out here for tourists since Chile seems like it has something for everybody? Thanks again!
@@gustavogarcia3155 That sounds like it'll be a great trip! We actually released a top-things-to-do-in-Valparaiso video recently, and outlined our favorite things to do in Valparaiso with details on where everything is in that video. In Santiago, we really enjoyed St Lucia Hill, Plaza De Armas, and San Cristobal hill's Cable-car to name a few! We still are working on our top-things-in-Santiago video, but should have a more complete list shortly!
@@SharingtheRoad Thank you so much for these recommendations! I will make sure to check those out along with your other video. It is all so appreciated!
I have a question: Once Ive arrived to Valparaiso which destination should I put on my uber or where should I go to arrive at a cool place for walking and such?
Around the 50 sec point, you mention that people have told you that the Santiago subways can be dangerous for tourists. Does anyone have any information about this? Sure, there will be pickpockets as in any public transport in a major city. Experienced travelers know how to avoid that. But any actual physical danger?
Hi Sameer, Great Question! We traveled with smaller bags, but I don't see larger luggage being a problem. I believe that they allow you to put larger items that won't fit in the belly of the bus which is designated for storage, but I'm not 100% sure. Most buses allow this, so I'm assuming that this shouldn't be an issue. From some forums I read, this shouldn't be an issue. Do you have a trip to Valparaiso in your near future?! 😊
This information is really what I need. Thank you. Did the bus schedule usually on time from your experience? I may have to leave Valparaiso straight to the airport. We family of 4 going in December.
Just saw your comment on our Valparaiso video! 😊 You guys are going to have such a fun time on your family adventure! It seemed like the busses were leaving on time consistently. Given how many busses they have going between the cities, my guess is you should have no trouble catching one reliably. Best of luck, and we hope you have a fantastic journey!
If there isn’t a direct bus from Valparaiso, There is a bus that goes straight from Viña Del Mar to the airport. Viña is a quick metro Train ride away from Valparaiso so even if it’s not on your itinerary it’s very easy to get there.
We are going next month and have booked a Turbus service from Valparaiso direct to SCL airport. There were only 3 direct per day but if the times suit you it will save having to change bus in Santiago
I don't think that should be an issue! There is a big cargo hold beneath the bus, so you'll probably have your luggage beneath it, and just grab it when you leave! Best of luck on your journey, you're going to love Valparaiso and Santiago, their both great cities!
Thank you for this! I’ll be going with a group to Chile in October. Does everyone need to be vaccinated to ride buses and dine at certain places? Thanks for the help!
Hi Josh! We hope you have a FANTASTIC time in Chile! It's such an incredible country and there is so much to see! We never had to show anything to enter busses or restaurants the entire time we were there. Hi guys, you talk about the 2 bus stations, Universidad de Santiago & Pajaritos, but it's not quite clear which one you used to get the bus out of Santiago. I will be there in June
Hi! We took the Univsersidad de Santiago bus station. This station most likely will end up picking up passangers at the Pajaraitos station on the way out of Santiago, so you can take either one! :) That's so exciting you have a trip coming up in June! You're going to love it! Is there anything in particular you're most excited about?!?!

I went to the bus station, caught the bus, and went. It was really easy. You will figure it out.
Do you know if I bring with me a luggage 20 x 28" x 11" Do they allow baggage? Thanks
The Santiago Metro is one of the safest in Latin America -- for just one ride to the bus station it's a great deal.

Can u bring 26” luggage on bus or will they put under bus?
What about renting a car in Santiago for a few days to travel around? Is parking easy there?
