Whedon gave the fans exactly what they wanted with this opening. I remember seeing this in a theater with 50 other Firefly fans at a midnight screening. When the Serenity came on screen, there was a literal roar from the crowd. When you saw Mal and Wash in the window, everyone lost it. A great moment!
I love this opening scene, the best ever. One second we have a wonderful, heroic fanfare, the next - the primary buffer panel falls off! The fallible human nature kicks in - great stuff!!
i have a tattoo of that logo without the white serenity, just the characters on the background over my heart, one of the greatest moments in movie history.

Very true.. Check out 'The Right Stuff' by Tom Wolf.. There's the official history of Space travel..then there's the real thing… Wolf's novel (and movie) is kinda the real deal. In the future, probably more so.. :)

it is, they had to rebuild the set since they tor it up when the show was cancelled, and when the rebuilt it they wanted to make it more unsettling than the show to add tension
every time someone would tell me they werent sure if The Avengers was going to be a good movie i would refer them to Serenity, not only is it written and directed by Joss Whedon but it is also a movie about several characters joining together to save the universe
Listen VERY carefully (helps if you're on headphones) to the beginning just as the Serenity text comes up, you can hear the violinist (at least it sounds like a violin to me) breathing :D

I love the massive extended dolly shot in the opening, it looks like it was done all in one take. If it actually was then I'm extremely impressed.
