All those negatives comment mostly are coming from Americans who think they're excel in everything. Well, this show was in 2001. By High school students. Why can't you just accept the fact that they're better than yours. This piece surely not easy to be played while marching. Just don't compared the high school band with DCI. Such an unfair comparison.
but BOA shows of the era we're about as good, plus the director was an Alumni of the Cavaliers, using drill and directing techniques from American corps.
american bands are sloppy, slow, messy and terrible. If you look closely at american high school bands, at least 80% are fat and can't even march. They need to learn from Asia and stop stuffing garbage down their throats.
Not compared to DCI. I'd match the Blue Devils with any day. And why not? Kids in DCI are the same age? Put these kids in a hot summer football field sweating like American Bands. The performance becomes much sloppier due to the rough terrain of grass versus a nice slick hard floor with Air Conditioning.
I found everything about it to be a bit boring, repetitive, and emotionless, the drill was a bit of a one trick pony, granted they probably practiced a lot more than the average high school marching band, I do however respect this program, it was kinda cool, even for an old DCI vet like me.
I have been a championship Texas band director for years. This is one of the finest marching bands I have ever seen. What an inspiration and what a statement for the youth of Japan. I am sure you are very proud!
I have been in High School band. I have competed, I have judged, and I have taught at multiple levels. This is the epitome of perfection at the High School Level. This band is amazing, and I give complete respect for the students, and instructors. Great sound, great technique, great show!
I bet this is normal for their culture, very disciplined. As a DCI HUGE Cavaliers fan I must say this show is SPECTACULAR I watched 3 times straight 👏🏾🙌🏾👌🏾✊🏾❤️ #LoveFromHawaii
I would have to agree in so far as this is the best performance I've witnessed live or on film. Hatake is correct in that Americans (we) do think we excel in everything, but not as many as one would generalize. There may be performances whose technical proficiency is better than this version of Nishihara's Marching Band. There are some amazing bands before 00-01 and since. In the US Drum & Bugle Corps have had some incredible levels of performance perfections especially in the 1980s and 1990s - epsecially the Band of Gold. [I remember seeing a recruiting film of Florida A&M's Marching 100 from the early 1970s. Although Florida A&M's Marching Band style is collegiate and considered a "Show Band," back then only males were allowed and a mere 100 persons actually earned a spot in the musical body. Their high steps, Rattler Stepping, was amazingly all in time (everyone on the same foot), the spacing and level of formations were impressive, and their music selections performed were from Pop Songs to Classical Music (nearly a Symphonic Sound Quality). They have since never been as good in my opinion, not even close.] Anyhow, I now have to say that this Nishihara's perofmance of Ardiente Sentiemiento is nearly Flawless and the level of musical and formation difficulty is the greatest I've seen (by a High School nonetheless). Even more impressive to me is the emotional power of their presentation. Upon their formation into a single formation moving forward nearly brings tears as for me it states they are 'One Unit at heart moving forward together' (8:13).' I found this performance back in 2011 and showed my son of James Madison High School Ban, San Antonio, TX. Soon, many of the 300+ band members were checking out the link (ua-cam.com/video/P6wALprnilY/v-deo.html). Now, DCI bands are impressive - especially todays'. However, I would remind viewers that culture in the US High School Band programs is serious, but it is difficult to legally require students to put in the long hours necessary to reach the level of a Nishihara. I am amazed and grateful for this performance being posted twice on UA-cam. THANK YOU!!!!
You should also add that this is indoor marching. Without sun glare, with good acoustics, and with air conditioning. The quality would obviously be better than say a band on a football field at night in front of screaming stands of people. The slick surface of the floor allows for easier marching than astro turf. Still an amazing performance - but there are major differences between this and DCI.
Great show. For all the haters on this page. Just think that these kids study their asses off and are able to pull this show off. Plus this isn't Precision marching. They're highschoolers.
Unbelievable but Fair statement. Just glad the judges at the 2001 World Championship's disagreed with you and not me :) I was totally entertained and was in shock when I saw this show for the first time, and I'm still in awe at how well this show flows with the difficulty both in score and in movement.
Awesome Performance. We should all remember we don't need to dampen someone else's light for ours to shine. There is plenty of room for great performances. Congratulations kids!!! Keep it up!!
WOW at the flawless flag toss to the solo dancer towards the end. Having been in marching band all four years of high school, myself, I can usually pick out mistakes in even the best routines, but honestly, I didn't find a thing wrong with this show. Fantastic!!
Slept in Phantom's bus back in either '77 or '78 (can never remember) when The finals were in Denver and My Dad and I had no place to sleep due to all the inns being booked. It was an old tranformed high school bus with the old bench styles seats. Damn, it was cold in Denver that night, but it was nice of Phantom to let us have a place to sleep. I'll never forget it. Then the Vanguard went on to sweep it all with a compelling show.
I’ve watched this video multiple times since it was published in 2007. I’m still blown away by this performance. Also I’m blown away by the negative comments. Blah blah blah dci is better. Well duh, they practice more and hand pick every member. With that being said, look at the Blue Devils, they always have a ton of Asian members and they so happen to have more titles than anyone. I’m sure a lot of these members have marched dci and aged out by now.
I was an instructor for both marching band and Drum and Bugle corps and I have absolutly nothing bad to say about this performance, it was flawless. The spacing was amaizng, the tempo changes were unheard of on the field lke this. perfect show.
this is the best show i have ever seen in my whole life i go to james logan high school and i thought we were won of the best winning a score 95 and colorguard 99 in wba they are like 110% great job their marching techniques are very precise, :) i am soo proud of nishihara great job especially keeping in time with the tempo at a very fast pace and not losing potential in timing. this encourages me and my band mates at james logan that their is sooo much that we can improve on and to recognize
Spectacular! Definitely an all-around A+ band. Sound, marching and overall presentation was ALL spot on!! That color guard was probably the BEST I've ever seen in all the contests I've been too. Superb choreo and synchronization/execution was great!! I was dumbstruck why one A+ band (west coast) had a HUGE color guard (complete with all sorts of props) that was totally UNsynchronized and a hot mess! I was sitting next to a parent who was all upset they came in 3rd or 4th.
Acoustics are everything. That sax solo is louder than an entire American band alone because of mics and indoor court acoustics. Air Conditioning means a lot too. Big differences here between your typical American Band. Marching will naturally become sloppier on astro turf in 90 degree summer heat. They're not spreading more than 20 yards total either. Standard marching bands march about 60-70 yards of a football field.
This show is so clean with the complex drill that it actually cracks like lightning. Wow. One of the cleanest shows I've watched from this Japanese high school band.... I wish they could compete in America.
Watched this to get pumped for a High School competition I'm attending this afternoon. Amazing! This has gotten me all psyched! Awesome in every respect!
@chstrombone11 so............. im american. and im marching in DCI... but keep in mind. this is a HIGHSCHOOL and their lines are a lot better than most of drum corps today. so.. back dat azz up, booboo.
+Newtkid304 No, they're better than Avon. The precision involved with this show is immaculate. Avon may have good drill writers and a good horn line, but these high school kids sound absolutely remarkable ON THE MOVE. The fact that you can clearly distinguish individual voices from one another while they're jazz running across that floor puts them on a whole other level than any high school marching band in the United States. Avon sounds amazing and they're a great marching band, don't get me wrong (they won Grand Nationals three times in a row for a reason, you know), but like most marching bands they show weaknesses when playing on the move. This Nishihara High School Marching Band shows little to no weakness in that regard and the transitions from playing while standing and moving are almost seamless.
I'm my car!! OK... Sorry.... I just couldn't help myself :P The band is all there. Watch it again. I've seen it 1000 times! It just doesn't get old. It's just too good. On my channel there are 4 more shows that I absolutely love. Try the 2002-2003 show. It has the best ending of any band I've ever seen EVER! The 2004-5 show has the toughest show (watch the overhead for killer marching, watch the nationals for the best sound. Big difference in the two versions.
This is an absolutely extraordinary feat for a high school group. When a group of their age level and practice regime is outshining some of the strongest acts in DCI and WGI, it says something about the discipline and dedication Japan takes into the arts compared to the West. Simply outstanding.
That was really good!! The precise-ness of the forms really got me, considering most American bands perform on lined Football Fields with the occasional Basketball Court, guiding must be REALLY important... I especially love the little Trumpet trio at 7:18, nice little chord there! Haha
Wow!!! they sure do made a lot of works on this one....and a lot od disciplne!! well all it takes is just A mode of conduct, a standard of courage, discipline, fortitude and integrity can do a great deal to make a Marching Band Show beautiful.!!!
They won the world later this particular year outdoors. What else do they need to prove? They also won the worlds in 2005 I think it was. If any other band thought that they were that good, they could have stepped up and competed (and probably lost, like the rest did). These kids (especially the horn line), were extremely tight.
'78, I saw The Vanguard clean house in Denver I believe. I was in High school band, we were pretty good. Looking back though, damn near everything was concert formation. But even though the Vanguard won with a compelling show, & no matter how good their score was. Shows have evolved. Shows now are twice as fast, creative and difficult as in the 70's. A 70's show no matter how good it was lacks speed, design, and creation compared to today's standard even though it was "mind blowing" back then.
In 1991, I was in the top three best drum majors in Louisiana. Our band was unstopable. We played high school games, parades, and NFL Saints games. I majored in music in college. With out a doubt, this is remarkable! I have seen hunderds of high school, college, and professional musicians in marching bands and drum corps. THIS IS THE BEST MARCHING BAND I HAVE EVER SEEN. If someone out there has seen better, let me know
HOLY FRICKING CRAP. O_O That is such an amazing show. And they march cymbals (ours don't). Dang. Wow. I'm just... completely floored. 6/5 stars... plus.
This was fantastic. I wonder how hard it was to learn drill in a gymnasium, let alone keep on tempo. But the guard was together, which is rare enough, and the sound was perfectly balanced. Amazing job !
good god... i will have to agree with being the best show ive seen... incredible.. you can tell they practice like hell... straight lines.. shapes... quick movement... precise timing... outrageous...
It probably has more do to the video quality. When I saw this show live at the nationals (that was the 1st time I had ever seen this show & the 2nd time I had ever seen this band perform), it was so good, so clean (including this part in question), there was absolutely no doubt who won the nationals & then the worlds. I was totally floored. There were other really good bands, but this was a work of art. This video was taken at an encore for the parents & community before graduation.
very very very nice. i'm gonna have to say the snare line's a bit dirty at parts, but still, the rest of the band is simply amazing, that blew me away, much respect, great marching and great musicianship. =D
I'm a horn; I cannot BELIEVE their horns pulled that off!!!!!!! I thought I was skilled, but they put me and my entire section to shame. I think I'm in love.
I think I just had a "bandgasm"! That was the best marching and playing I've ever seen from any marching band ever in my life, and keep in mind I keep a close on Grand National Champs. They would dominate if they came to the states!
It is great to see all the comments have been posted here. I am sure each every one of you has different oppinions and it is great to be shared. That is actually showing how great the band is and I am proud of them to be recognized so much through out the world now! Go Nishihara! Remember guys, they are still high school kids who love MUSIC and MARCHING!
I watch a lot of world class drumcorps. So, when I saw the title of this video, I was thinking, "Yeah, right...". I gotta say I was wrong! This is the best high school band I have ever seen. This is tons better than the electronic crap that our american high school bands put out these days. Awesome job.

ua-cam.com/video/5Svw9oVp8YQ/v-deo.html --- Same band. On an Football field. Massive differnce in quality.
I have been a championship Texas band director for years. This is one of the finest marching bands I have ever seen. What an inspiration and what a statement for the youth of Japan. I am sure you are very proud!
Almost 20 years later and it still brings chills to my spine! So glad I got to live in Japan at the time and witness a golden era of talent!🥰
I have been in High School band. I have competed, I have judged, and I have taught at multiple levels. This is the epitome of perfection at the High School Level. This band is amazing, and I give complete respect for the students, and instructors. Great sound, great technique, great show!
これだけ激しく動きながら一瞬でピシッと決まるバンドは世界中見渡してもこの時期の西原だけだろう。
I bet this is normal for their culture, very disciplined. As a DCI HUGE Cavaliers fan I must say this show is SPECTACULAR I watched 3 times straight 👏🏾🙌🏾👌🏾✊🏾❤️ #LoveFromHawaii

It is amazing that they have such a crisp and clear sound when facing away from the audience. Their transitions are amazing and great song choice.
何百回見返したんだろう。この動画がもう15年も前なんて……。
Still easily one of my favorite high school marching band shows
The origins of WGI Winds. Now realized in America. Indoor marching band is awesome. :)
So crisp! This is amazing for a high school. Job well done. Congrats =]
Great show. For all the haters on this page. Just think that these kids study their asses off and are able to pull this show off. Plus this isn't Precision marching. They're highschoolers.

gave em chills like 5 times!! Unbelievable for a high school.
What a fantastic show! I applaud all of them for their hard work and obvious dedication. The colorguard is TOTALLY workin' it out! Love it! :)
Awesome Performance. We should all remember we don't need to dampen someone else's light for ours to shine. There is plenty of room for great performances. Congratulations kids!!! Keep it up!!

That's so true. Why are they being so negative anyway
Drum Corp? Aren't they all adults? If so, please don't compare adults to kids lol
I was an instructor for both marching band and Drum and Bugle corps and I have absolutly nothing bad to say about this performance, it was flawless. The spacing was amaizng, the tempo changes were unheard of on the field lke this. perfect show.

Very clean marching. Music and guard also very good and clean. From a Jenison Marching Band fan and booster here.
7:06 - You can actually hear the clarinets! OMG! haha. This band is amazing.
shadonite ya that is amazing
Spectacular! Definitely an all-around A+ band. Sound, marching and overall presentation was ALL spot on!! That color guard was probably the BEST I've ever seen in all the contests I've been too. Totally gave me goosebumps. They're amazing!
Thank you very much for sharing of a wonderful animation.
I think mortaring beyond this is also very difficult as for present.
MOST. AMAZING. BAND. EVER.
This video makes me cry. I can never get my band members to march this well in step for the life of me, but they make it look amazing.
This is high quality folks. Get over it.

Amazing! So much energy, great form and lines. You can just see all of the dedication.
すごい。けど観客の拍手が少ないですね。これ最高のパフォーマンスでしょ。
This gave me goosebumps at the end! the last 10 seconds are awesome! the whole thing is awesome!
Guys look at the damn title. Best high school marching band ever not best marching band ever. There is a BIG difference.
OMG totally right- I hate when people mess up the two. If I say I'm in band, they are like, "Oh, so a marching band?" -_-
I am shocked at how little the people clap!!! This is a jaw dropping show!! I would have been yelling my head off in amazement!
those last few drill sets. Michael Gaines moves lol. Fantastic show!!!
YASS MICHAEL GAINES!
This show is so clean with the complex drill that it actually cracks like lightning. Wow.
One of the cleanest shows I've watched from this Japanese high school band....
I wish they could compete in America.
Personally I think this is better than DCI
I love it when the cymbols crash and the drumline goes on by themselves. And the tenors look like they invisible!
oh my god i wanna see them at dci
Watched this to get pumped for a High School competition I'm attending this afternoon. Amazing! This has gotten me all psyched! Awesome in every respect!
日本の歴代マーチング演技のなかで他校も含めNo.1だと思う
もっと橘ファンとかマーチングを知っている人に見て欲しい
外国人だけじゃなく
i cried. so much effort into creating something just so beautiful.
@chstrombone11 so............. im american. and im marching in DCI... but keep in mind. this is a HIGHSCHOOL and their lines are a lot better than most of drum corps today. so.. back dat azz up, booboo.
Thank you! I look forward to seeing another of their performances.
I'm super jealous
The level at which these kids perform their show (which itself is incredibly difficult) is just astounding. An amazing performance.
なにげに神演奏なんすけど
their roll step is great. these guys are the best ive seen
This is HS, can't compare them to Drum Corp
That was amazing !!! I loved the swift transitions , looks professional
A very good band, but not as good as the Avon Marching Black and Gold.
+Newtkid304 No, they're better than Avon. The precision involved with this show is immaculate. For now, this is the best; tomorrow, somebody will have a better show with some new thing that at this time we can't even dream of.
This is not the best marching band
Of course. Kyoto Tachibana is.
This is beyond one of the best things I've EVER seen in my whole life!!!
That was waaaaay too beautiful.
Big difference in the two versions.
oh man.. watching it so many time and still gives me goosebump! awesome!
execution is SICK and the indoor venue certainly allows the band to create more color than in an outdoor setting.
WOw! most impressive. Lots of people did lots of hard work. I'm pleased it paid off for all of them.
those blocks are solid straight lines! can't believe it
the curves are almost as impressive as well
That is what we strive for. that was amazing. Near perfect execution and style. Technique was right on man! =D
This is an absolutely extraordinary feat for a high school group. When a group of their age level and practice regime is outshining some of the strongest acts in DCI and WGI, it says something about the discipline and dedication Japan takes into the arts compared to the West. Simply outstanding.
These guys are simply brilliant! Probably it's one of the best show with an epic and very energetic ending!
that was just incredible. kudos to those fine young people for a great well-rehearsed and inspired performance!
omg! everything was flawless! that was amazing!
2020,Still the best performance for me. FC from Thailand
That was really good!! The precise-ness of the forms really got me, considering most American bands perform on lined Football Fields with the occasional Basketball Court, guiding must be REALLY important... I especially love the little Trumpet trio at 7:18, nice little chord there! Haha
that mallet work is so amazing it brings a tear to my eye
Wow!!! they sure do made a lot of works on this one....and a lot od disciplne!! well all it takes is just A mode of conduct, a standard of courage, discipline, fortitude and integrity can do a great deal to make a Marching Band Show beautiful.!!!
i love the guard and music...and i really love when they are in blocks
My gosh... Everyone stepping the same time. No one going out of line. Amazing.
This is the kind of stuff I want to do! I envy these folks, not only for their amazing playing skills but also for the chance to DO this.
They won the world later this particular year outdoors. What else do they need to prove? They also won the worlds in 2005 I think it was. If any other band thought that they were that good, they could have stepped up and competed (and probably lost, like the rest did). These kids (especially the horn line), were extremely tight.

gooosh. everything was so spot on. amazing. :]

That was great!! I think if I saw this show in person, I'd be going ghetto crazy. Through the show, I'd be like "YEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!! LOL
OMG this is the best i've seen to this day from a high school the guard is mind blowing
i have watched this video like maybe too times before and it never gets old hahah :D i love their show especially their drumline :)
