I joined the cast when it came to the US as a low brass player, and its not that we WEREN'T playing loudly, all of our horns were mic'ed, so the sound mixer in the back of the house was the real hero there, turning individual mics on and off and up and down constantly. The second we walked off stage, they would turn them off so conversations offstage weren't piped out into the house.

Bill Holman's incredible arrangement, which is from the Capitol LP Adventures in Jazz LP, is the basis for this treatment by the Blast cast. They really kick it! Superb rendition!

  • @TheTurtleTube

I had almost forgotten about this! I saw this on Broadway in June, 2001, at the old Broadway Theatre next door to the Ed Sullivan Theatre where Dave Letterman did his show. Unimaginable. They essentially did the 1961 Bill Holman arrangement that Stan Kenton played with the old, insane, can't-tame-them, loud-as-fuck Conn Mellophoniums.
They blew the goddamn doors off the building. And then after 9/11, the show closed for no good reason except paranoia. Hhhhhh....

That's a LONG way from the Salute to Disney show in 1985 that gave birth to this group! I'm not bashing Star at all. i saw this show live on broadway. i played this tune in drum corps three times (caballeros), wrote two drills for it for my college alma mater, and two percussion charts. never got a chance to conduct it as a drum major. best tune for drum corps ever. cabs 1995 and scouts 1988 are my two favorite arrangements.

In the DCI Age, Madison Scouts first played it in 1978 (pre DCI in 1963) and over the next 2 and a half decades it became their signature piece and a foundation for a number very crowd pleasing Latin themed shows including their championship year in 1988. It was also the high point of the Alumni Corps performance in 2006 at DCI semifinals. Madison and a number of other DCI corps are very well represented in Blasts! performing repertoire.

We eat, sleep, drink, and live music...we are not in it because our parents made us...or to get a grade in school..we are in it because it runs thru our veins..sort of like a cult...if you have never marched in drum corps..you cannot possibly understand..no disrespect to bands or whatever..just enjoy & do not question why there are no windwoods or whatever..it is what it IS!

All versions performed by modern jazz bands and marching units today essentially are based on Bill Holmans arrangement done for Stan Kenton. Drum and Bugle Corps began performing this tune in the 50's, the predominant corps were Hawthorne Caballeros and Cambridge Caballeros.

  • @blazinblu101

It's in a solo. Lots of people have been doing that for ages because it's so easy to incorporate.

  • @worthgoldmusic
    @worthgoldmusic 14 років тому

Malaguena originally was from the sixth movement of the Suite Andalucia by Ernesto Lecuona,
Bill Holman's arrangement for the Stan Kenton Orchestra, reimagined the song as a fiery big band showpiece. Performances of this arrangement appeared on Kenton's 1961 album Adventures in Jazz. Maynard Ferguson would end it by blowing in an unbelievable high register on the trumpet.
They're doing the Holman arrangement here!
    Ya gotta love it!!!

I don't see why people are arguing over if drum corp and marching band are similar. They're two different types of ensembles, that play two different styles of music. Practically the only similarity between them is that they both perform on a field. (though I see now they both perform on stage too). Even though I'm a woodwind player, I agree with everyone who says DC is different. Not a day goes by I didn't wish I played brass so I could be in a corp, but that's the beauty of music...

This is a stage show based on Drum Corps, they don't usually march guitars. Plus Ernesto Lecuona arranged this version for piano solo. These performers split the piano music into brass parts, which means this was never meant for guitar. Also, when I played this with the Madison Scouts, no one complained

This is the reason why so many drum corps have dispanded. Nobody can afford it..especially in this economy...its just all different now...and for the record...drum corps members ALSO go to school, work fulltime and then go to rehearsal every night until almost midnight..it was tough but we did it...drum corps taught me how to be tough .

While I do agree with you, in my "band", we sweat, bleed, cramp, wake up early every day for rehearsal, go to school and then have a 3 hour rehearsal after, come on weekends, and even on holidays, and we still keep our GPA up and running. We join the "band" because "we" want to, and the grade means nothing to us. We constantly compete against each other to see who is the better player. It just so happens that we get stuck with those who are there because they are made

@theunodance You can get the DVD at Amazon. Just search for Blast! An Explosive Musical Celebration and you'll see it. I bought it through PBS.org years ago, but I don't think it's available through them anymore.
