Something I wanted to mention: This was cut from the movie, but it was revealed that Jack freed 100 slaves (that Cutler Beckett had ordered him to deliver), which led to him being branded as a pirate, Beckett burning down his ship and sending it to the depths. This leads to Jack asking Davy Jones to raise his ship up again, turning it into the Black Pearl. Fast forward to PotC 2 where Jack asks Davy Jones how many souls his soul is worth, and Davy Jones, in his cruel fashion, tells Jack that his soul is worth 100 souls. The same number of souls that he freed would now be enslaved to ensure HIS freedom. Really brilliant and I'm very sad that they cut this part out, it was great for Jack's character while also showing how cruel Davy Jones could be.

Davy Jones is such a charismatic and relatable character. And the CGI is insane. And the actor Bill Nighy did such a good job giving Davy a personality and emotion. Brilliant character.

The crazy thing is, he's so good, that even in a deleted scene where he's in those pajamas with lightbulbs on without the CGI, you still believe he's Davy Jones.
Absolutely, and it’s not about how many pixels the actual cgi has, but what the animators did with it. His facial expressions still look better than any other cgi generated character.

For all the faults of the POTC films after the first one, I’d argue that the second one not only truly deserved the Visual Effects Oscar, but the effects still hold up better than a lot of other films from that time period, which is saying something considering that film came out 15 years ago!
THIS is how you do CGI. I was a kid when I first saw Davy Jones on screen, and I was absolutely blown away. To this day, I’m still stunned how good he and his crew look given the time. The first Pirates movie has some kinda gross looking early 2000s CGI, but 2 and 3 just scream quality. If only Disney could have constrained themselves and left the franchise as an epic trilogy
Between the first and second movie, a little program called ZBrush that allows you to sculpt 3D models as if they were made of clay and can handle millions of polygons to create micro-details became the industry standard (before then I think it's biggest claim to fame were the wings of a vampire in Underworld 2, Dead Man's Chest was among the first to use it for full characters). Coupled with new ways of rendering realistic lighting that, if I recall correctly, were developed by the studio that did the effects for this very film, the jump in quality was like Thanos, inevitable.

The scenes in pirates 2 when Jones’s crew where on the island in broad daylight admittedly didn’t work as well and they recognized that. Davy Jones is an absolute master class of special effects, his crew didn’t look nearly as good as he did but in the context of the film they hid the limitations well. Part of it is also that I’m just kind of a sucker for those movies, I admit there’s some nostalgia, but his monstrous look paired with genuinely good writing created a memorable villain that they could never really overcome. With 5 Captain Salazar felt like they tried to recreate Jones but forgot everything that made him so memorable and threatening
Always thought it was cool how his tentacles would writhe the more angry he gets. Overall he’s one of the dopest villains design wise. The other pirates are also genuinely horrific.
A funny detail I also noticed was during the scene when the Flying Dutchman dove beneath the waves to initiate the ambush, and you get a camera angle behind Davy Jones as the ship sinks. If you look closely you can see the tentacles holding Davy Jones’ hat down as they plummet through the water so it doesn’t get washed away. Really interesting little detail that wasn’t necessary to add whatsoever, just shows how much the animators and artists loved their work.

It's not just a declaration of rage. It's almost begging her for a reason. Asking her to give any reason that would allow Jones to forgive her. Very aggressively, yes, but in the end, he wouldn't ask the question if the answer meant nothing to him.
Davy Jones is a great villain. He might seem simple at first glance but as the story unfolds we uncover multiple layers, like peeling an onion. I wish we had more characters like this in this day and age.

He’s more well known and respected in the UK, he’s less well known in Hollywood but he’s not that underrated everywhere. ❤They actually had to make sure they had someone who wasn’t necessarily that well known to American or international audiences, but could carry a role like this one-or any type of role that is motion capture, and relies heavily on the head-to-toe physicality of the performer-and that typically means someone with formal training and experience on the stage.
Davy Jones probably falls into the category of tragic villain. He wasn’t always that way and is basically a love-sick, heartbroken man who repressed these emotions with rage and cruelty. This makes it so tragic. I also hold Calypso partly responsible as she promised she’d meet him for that one day and then ditched him. “It’s my nature” isn’t really an excuse. His story is perhaps one of the best character stories in PoTC.

Being a pirate back then was the equivalent to being an astronaut navigating the unknowns of outer space. So it makes sense why many loved the sea so much.
I’m a merchant marine, that shit gets into your blood. When you’re out there, not a lot going on, you think about port. When you spend more than a week at port though, you just get bored and want to go back out.

Right on point, his love for the sea was able to manifest the mythical embodiment of the sea to come to him and I love how Jones as a character symbolises many other sailors at the time who fell in love with the sea to the point that they become one with it (his physical form shifting to an octopus). When Davy Jones gets angry at calypso for not keeping the promise to reunite on land after 10 years of fulfilling his duty to her and with her responding that “it’s in her nature” I saw it as the fact that many sailors must have believed with the amount of time and devotion they spent at sea that they could predict it and trust it, that they had bonded with it, therefore leading to their ultimate demise of dying at sea because in truth you can’t tame the sea. You can’t ask it to be calm or wild when you want to be. Thus in my eyes, Davy Jones as a character is the symbolism of the betrayal and hurt most men at sea must have felt in those final moments when the one thing they loved betrayed them. This role was made even more perfect by how Bill Nighy portrayed such a complex personality. Jones wasn’t the typical misunderstood character, in fact everyone in the movie knew why he was the way he was and what affect Calypso had on him and yet he still chose to be cruel because he is cruel, I like it cause a villain doesn’t have to be a misunderstood hero who corrupted himself he can be just ordinarily cruel and still be memorable. Wonderful video on one of my favourite villains, really enjoyed watching this :)
Also Calypso’s symbol in potc seems to be crabs and Davy jones is part octopus, which prey on crabs but he is also part crab himself because deep down he still cares for her.
I like how Disney made Davy Jones an actual terror in the franchise. Sailors talk about him all the time and Disney delivered in terms of why Jones is feared.

Finally my favorite villain of all time ever since I was a little kid he is such a Shakespearian tragedy and you just feel for him, he is just a modern day gothic monster. Plus the performance of Bill Nyhe was outstanding and the CGI on him is absolutely impeccable it looks better than most modern cgi today it blows my mind to think about when these films were made
I think two excellent characters worth examining would be Dutch Van Der Linde and Micah Bell from the Red Dead Redemption series. Few characters have garnered such rabid hatred as Micah, and Dutch has a mixed base of people who loathe and love him
The one thing that always struck with Jones is the rhythm of his peg leg. When you hear it everything else goes quiet. The liar's dice scene is a good example. As soon as Will says his name it goes dead quiet and the sound of the leg hitting the deck above can be heard. There was no way Jones heard his name over the din below deck and yet he did. He is uncanny and the fact that he does most of scenes at night seems to add something that was not as present when he was in daylight in the third film. It was kind of mirror that he was no longer as menacing because someone controls his heart. Plus that part where he moves through the wood of the ship during the maelstrom fight is crazy.

Like it was all a lie to get him to partake in this eternal duty. He was in love and the idea that that love was used in order to get him to pledge his life to the seas forever.... damn, that's something else.
Ive noticed that the pirates franchise has had lots of themes of Man vs Immortality. Which is explored in many different ways. A new found appreciation for these movies.

I love how you mention Jone's rampage really was just a grief-fueled tantrum, he opted for rage because he couldn't face the reality of his feelings. One of the most understandable villains in fiction I think and one that really does have a well deserved reputation as a self-made monster.
I took British Literature as a dual-credit course in high school, and one of our stories was from the time period of Beowulf. It describes a sailor's experience rowing on a ship, about how even though the experience could be beyond exhausting and brutal, it was more than outweighed by the thrill of surviving a storm, of seeing the fury of nature itself unleashed. It's this brand of love that I think drew a lot of the pirates of Davy Jones' time to the sea, though as Beckett stated in Dead Man's Chest, "The edges of the map are being filled in." Which signifies to me that the Golden Age of Piracy was drawing to a close, further amplified by his words in At World's End: "This is no longer your world, Jones."
Despite his wickedness, I find it impossible not to pity him. His pain is just so quintessentially human. He channels into his remaining humanity to enhance his own evil. The only way to be so cruel is to understand the suffering of others. He feels everything.
Davy Jones was one of my favorite villains growing up. His appearance gave me the creeps and his menacing voice, courtesy of Bill Nighy (Georges Claisse (RIP) in the French dub), made him stand out among other villains. I’m glad that the Vile Eye uploaded a video on him. I’m a huge fan of his Analyzing Evil videos, and I hope to see more great ones in the future. On a side note, I’d like to say Rest In Peace to Georges Claisse, the French voice of Davy Jones, who died on November 15, 2021 at 80 years old. He dubbed great villains in French, like Palpatine in Star Wars and Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean.

With Christmas coming just a month's time from now, a villain I would love to see on this would be Mr. Potter from "It's A Wonderful Life". As for this, Davy Jones is indeed a fantastic villain. He's very imposing and frightening to look at, yet at the same time very tragic as he is also someone consumed by his grief and unable to let go of the past, perfectly symbolized by his locking away his heart.

Davy Jones is indeed a very compelling villain as a picture of the horrifying extremes lost love can drive someone to, while Henry Potter is an analysis-worthy example of how zealotry to self-enrichment and the almighty dollar can be incredibly damaging to an individual and their community, in ways seen and unseen.
@@christmashake8968 Indeed, Mr. Potter, unlike, say, Ebenezer Scrooge, is a truly evil and selfish man consumed by greed and the desire to own all of Bedford Falls, and Pottersville being a perfect example of how he views everyone else as nothing but a source of income, with his casinos, brothels, and other shady establishments he owns in that timeline being just a means of distracting its miserable people who are stuck living a dead-end existence in his horrible slums with temporary but highly addictive pleasures (the "bread and circus effect" taken to its worst extreme) that only further line his pockets and ultimately trap them into debt with him and thus being forced to work for him via having to get jobs in them to provide for themselves.

Another detail I learned about: in an unused clip from At World’s End, when Jack is talking with Becket. Becket makes the claim that Jack had broken a deal between the two of them years ago. Jack responds, dead serious: “You can’t own a person, mate.” Becket had contracted Jack, back when he was a nobody with a no-name ship trying to get started as a captain. His first contract had been to haul a bunch of slaves as part of the triangle trade. Jack refused and set them free. *All 100 of them.* As punishment, Becket hunted Jack down, set his ship ablaze, forcing him to watch as its hull blackening from the fire until it sank beneath the waves, and finally, branded Jack a pirate.
One day Calypso literally just had to show for one day out of a hundred. If she had shown up that first day and been absent every other Jones likely would’ve kept on loving her unconditionally. “I love her and she loves me one day she’ll be there waiting,” but merely for her capricious whims she was absent the one and only day that mattered. Thus Jones came to know, “she wasn’t there, she’ll never be there.”
I have said it countless times that Davy Jones is a masterful villain because of his incredible complexity and relatability. This all but confirms that for me. Lovely video

What hurts the most about Davey Jones is that he's one of the better characters in the series where the sequels around him aren't nearly as good. I realize Disney needed to build a world that these characters live in which is why have the plot points revolving around the East India Trading Company and the Brethren Court, but imagine how great Dead Man's Chest and At World's End could have been if they cut the fluff and just primarily focused on the conflict between Jones vs. therest of the cast of characters
I personally love the complex conflict between the different pirates, the East India Trading Company and Davy Jones. I think this complex game makes the story better.
I think that extra stuff is important. Especially everything regarding Beckett. Beckett is the opposite to Davy Jones, in a way. Both are evil and cruel, but when Daby Jones knew he was about to die, he reacted in anger and joy when he hurt someone close to Jack. When Beckett knew he was about to die, he froze up. Jones was emotional, Beckett was cold. Both were heartless
Can we take a moment to appreciate that we're watching a video anylizing a villain from a franchise based on a theme park ride. The reason I love the Pirates series (the first three) is because they didn't halfass it in any department especially with the writing and they very easily could have. Many will disagree but I think the original trilogy of Pirates movies is one of the most perfect action adventure trilogies ever made.

Even almost 20 years later, the CGI on Davy Jones' face is almost as good as with Thanos in Infinity War and Endgame. That can't be said with films made 2 decades ago with similar tech.
Davy Jones is such a tragic and extremely well fleshed out villain. He was probably a good man before his transformation. A simple man that loved the sea more than anything and just wanted to be in love with someone that loved him the same.
Great review, Davy Jones is a very compelling villan! As a sugestion, I'd like to see an analysis on Titan, from Megamind. He's a bit of a meme right now, but I think he breaks the mold for supervilains in a unprecedented way. I mean, what other big main villain can be both cruel AND stupid? His pettiness alone makes him a very unique kind of villain.
Tighten is scary, because of how stupid he is. He thinks only of himself and his desires, without thinking of the consequences of his actions. This means he has no problem using his superpowers to harm anyone who prevents him getting what he wants. That makes him scary. He has very human problems (selfishness, entitlement, anger issues) that are only amplified by his superpowers.
A line that didn't make it into the final film stated that if Calypso had been there after the first 10 years, Jones would have been able to pass his duties off to someone else. I choose to take this as canon because it was the original authors' intention, it makes Jones that much more sympathetic, and it means that Will could be with Elizabeth once his 10 years were up. I know the fifth film contradicts this, but the fifth film also contradicts Jack's backstory from a fully filmed deleted scene from the third movie, the name of Will and Elizabeth's son from a companion book, and (most importantly) a line from the final cut of Dead Man's Chest that has Tia Dalma state that she gave Jack the compass. You can write the other three things off as non-canon because they weren't in the final cut of any movie, but there is no way for you to write off that line from Tia Dalma. Considering this, I have no issues writing the fifth film off as not canon to the first three and considering those deleted scenes to be canon. EDIT: Oh yeah, and the fifth film also says that Jack giving away the compass would unleash his greatest fear, even though he gave it away all the time in the second and third movies.

Would anyone else want to see a movie about Davy Jones' life before and during his relationship with Calypso? Just the idea of looking into the life of a man who captured the love of a capricious sea goddess; a captain so formidable that he, his vessel and his punishments for those who wrong him (Kraken and the Locker) become the nightmare of sailors the world over just sounds so amazing. Is it just me?
Brilliant. You absolutely have to do Cutler Beckett as well. He's easily the most interesting and entertaining villain in POTC, in part due to his mysteriousness, as we learn next to nothing about him. He's basically the Lex Luthor of the sea and a dyed-in-the-wool sociopath and megalomaniac, as well as a war criminal. If he were alive today, he'd definitely be tried for crimes against humanity.

I have a different take on the timeline. Binding calypso didn’t just give control of the sea to pirates, but to mankind. So what if the first brethren did form before the rise of Greece. What do we know about maritime history of that era? People were afraid of the sea, never ventured to far from shore hugging coastlines. In real life we know there was a whole mythology at the time regarding this, everything from falling off the edge of the world to getting devoured by leviathans of the deep. But let’s put this tidbit into the POTC universe. Calypso, the goddess self proclaimed as being changing, harsh, and untameable, was in control of the sea. She struck down those land creatures who dared challenge her control of her realm by sailing too far from shore. That is until she met Davy Jones, a man who had longed to explore the vast blue sea, feel the salt breeze on his face. Maybe he kept returning, maybe he even resisted her attempts to thwart him. Maybe when she sent the kraken to destroy him he instead tamed and befriended the beast. Maybe this is what drew her to him. Fast forward, a scorned, angry, and heart broken Jones wants revenge against her, and knows just how to do it. The biggest slight against the goddess who punished those who drifted into the sea? Give them control while she was bound to land, to watch in misery as they took over what had once been hers. So he tells them how to bind her, and they can control the waves. They do, and now the ocean is safer. Man can now venture beyond the shallows into open ocean. It takes centuries, but they learn how to build bigger ships, navigate by the stars. Where they once had been locked within sight of land, they now could travel to distant lands, undiscovered continents.
I gotta say, the segue into the sponser ads are always butter smooth on this channel. No sudden, annoying, sharp diversion into an ad like on other channels, you always transition so smoothly and even manage to keep a bit of humor about the overarching topic of the video in the ad itself. It's a relatively small thing, all things considered, but thanks for doing that.

I, for one, would love to see you do an episode on Q from Start Trek. The psychology side of things might be difficult, since he's essentially an omnipotent and immortal being, making him think very different from other sentient life in the series, but it would definitely be interesting. There is also a good argument that he's not evil at all, though he's certainly very much a villain in a lot of the show, or at the very least, the Heel to Picard's Face (and to a lesser extent, Sisco and Janeway's as well). I think that the binding of Calypso did Not begin the golden age of piracy, because of a monologue Barbossa has in the 'At World's End': "In another age, the First Bretheren Court captured the sea goddess, and bound her in her bones." [....] , but opened the door to Beckett, and his ilk! Better were the days when mastery of the seas came not from deals struck with eldritch creatures, but from the sweat of a man's brow and the strength of his back alone." This means pirates during the years of the movies were not at an advantage against merchants and navies of the time because of their skills at sailing, because sea-going is said to have been much easier. So by this statement, logically it would mean that the golden age of piracy was either before or after the binding of Calypso, and seeing as the movies take place right at the beginning of that age, and how (the terrible) 4th and 5th movies progress the story, it would make sense that the true age of piracy was only beginning. I would almost suggest that the movies precede the 'golden age', or mark the beginning of it, and that the destruction of the Dutchman, the kraken, and the flagship 'Endeavour' began the golden age of piracy. It’s incredible how good the CGI was for Davy. It stands the rest of time and if they do a film with him returning it’ll be interesting to see and compare the CGI
Something I wanted to mention: This was cut from the movie, but it was revealed that Jack freed 100 slaves (that Cutler Beckett had ordered him to deliver), which led to him being branded as a pirate, Beckett burning down his ship and sending it to the depths. This leads to Jack asking Davy Jones to raise his ship up again, turning it into the Black Pearl.
Fast forward to PotC 2 where Jack asks Davy Jones how many souls his soul is worth, and Davy Jones, in his cruel fashion, tells Jack that his soul is worth 100 souls. The same number of souls that he freed would now be enslaved to ensure HIS freedom. Really brilliant and I'm very sad that they cut this part out, it was great for Jack's character while also showing how cruel Davy Jones could be.

Davy Jones is such a charismatic and relatable character. And the CGI is insane. And the actor Bill Nighy did such a good job giving Davy a personality and emotion. Brilliant character.

For all the faults of the POTC films after the first one, I’d argue that the second one not only truly deserved the Visual Effects Oscar, but the effects still hold up better than a lot of other films from that time period, which is saying something considering that film came out 15 years ago!
THIS is how you do CGI. I was a kid when I first saw Davy Jones on screen, and I was absolutely blown away. To this day, I’m still stunned how good he and his crew look given the time. The first Pirates movie has some kinda gross looking early 2000s CGI, but 2 and 3 just scream quality. If only Disney could have constrained themselves and left the franchise as an epic trilogy
Between the first and second movie, a little program called ZBrush that allows you to sculpt 3D models as if they were made of clay and can handle millions of polygons to create micro-details became the industry standard (before then I think it's biggest claim to fame were the wings of a vampire in Underworld 2, Dead Man's Chest was among the first to use it for full characters). Coupled with new ways of rendering realistic lighting that, if I recall correctly, were developed by the studio that did the effects for this very film, the jump in quality was like Thanos, inevitable.
This was an extremely expensive film. One of the most expensive ever when it came out, its still up there.
Bruh they ruined this at the 4th movie because it didn't really match up with the 1,2,3 stuff... I wish they'd done a better job on the story.
It helps that theyre depicting relatively unfamiliar creatures and set most of their scenes during nighttime or at least at rainy weather.

The scenes in pirates 2 when Jones’s crew where on the island in broad daylight admittedly didn’t work as well and they recognized that. Davy Jones is an absolute master class of special effects, his crew didn’t look nearly as good as he did but in the context of the film they hid the limitations well. Part of it is also that I’m just kind of a sucker for those movies, I admit there’s some nostalgia, but his monstrous look paired with genuinely good writing created a memorable villain that they could never really overcome. With 5 Captain Salazar felt like they tried to recreate Jones but forgot everything that made him so memorable and threatening
Always thought it was cool how his tentacles would writhe the more angry he gets. Overall he’s one of the dopest villains design wise. The other pirates are also genuinely horrific.

A funny detail I also noticed was during the scene when the Flying Dutchman dove beneath the waves to initiate the ambush, and you get a camera angle behind Davy Jones as the ship sinks. If you look closely you can see the tentacles holding Davy Jones’ hat down as they plummet through the water so it doesn’t get washed away. Really interesting little detail that wasn’t necessary to add whatsoever, just shows how much the animators and artists loved their work.

It's not just a declaration of rage. It's almost begging her for a reason. Asking her to give any reason that would allow Jones to forgive her. Very aggressively, yes, but in the end, he wouldn't ask the question if the answer meant nothing to him.
Davy Jones is a great villain. He might seem simple at first glance but as the story unfolds we uncover multiple layers, like peeling an onion. I wish we had more characters like this in this day and age.

He’s more well known and respected in the UK, he’s less well known in Hollywood but he’s not that underrated everywhere. ❤They actually had to make sure they had someone who wasn’t necessarily that well known to American or international audiences, but could carry a role like this one-or any type of role that is motion capture, and relies heavily on the head-to-toe physicality of the performer-and that typically means someone with formal training and experience on the stage.
Davy Jones probably falls into the category of tragic villain.
He wasn’t always that way and is basically a love-sick, heartbroken man who repressed these emotions with rage and cruelty. This makes it so tragic.
I also hold Calypso partly responsible as she promised she’d meet him for that one day and then ditched him. “It’s my nature” isn’t really an excuse.
His story is perhaps one of the best character stories in PoTC.

3:10 YESSSSSS!!!! Right on point, his love for the sea was able to manifest the mythical embodiment of the sea to come to him and I love how Jones as a character symbolises many other sailors at the time who fell in love with the sea to the point that they become one with it (his physical form shifting to an octopus). When Davy Jones gets angry at calypso for not keeping the promise to reunite on land after 10 years of fulfilling his duty to her and with her responding that “it’s in her nature” I saw it as the fact that many sailors must have believed with the amount of time and devotion they spent at sea that they could predict it and trust it, that they had bonded with it, therefore leading to their ultimate demise of dying at sea because in truth you can’t tame the sea. You can’t ask it to be calm or wild when you want to be. Thus in my eyes, Davy Jones as a character is the symbolism of the betrayal and hurt most men at sea must have felt in those final moments when the one thing they loved betrayed them. This role was made even more perfect by how Bill Nighy portrayed such a complex personality. Jones wasn’t the typical misunderstood character, in fact everyone in the movie knew why he was the way he was and what affect Calypso had on him and yet he still chose to be cruel because he is cruel, I like it cause a villain doesn’t have to be a misunderstood hero who corrupted himself he can be just ordinarily cruel and still be memorable. Wonderful video on one of my favourite villains, really enjoyed watching this :)
Also Calypso’s symbol in potc seems to be crabs and Davy jones is part octopus, which prey on crabs but he is also part crab himself because deep down he still cares for her.

The one thing that always struck with Jones is the rhythm of his peg leg. When you hear it everything else goes quiet. The liar's dice scene is a good example. As soon as Will says his name it goes dead quiet and the sound of the leg hitting the deck above can be heard. There was no way Jones heard his name over the din below deck and yet he did. He is uncanny and the fact that he does most of scenes at night seems to add something that was not as present when he was in daylight in the third film. It was kind of mirror that he was no longer as menacing because someone controls his heart. Plus that part where he moves through the wood of the ship during the maelstrom fight is crazy.

What you said from 5:57 - 6:04 really just clicked for me all these years after watching the POTC films; something that I have never considered before when thinking of Davy Jones: him (possibly) feeling tricked. Like it was all a lie to get him to partake in this eternal duty. He was in love and the idea that that love was used in order to get him to pledge his life to the seas forever.... damn, that's something else.
Ive noticed that the pirates franchise has had lots of themes of Man vs Immortality. Which is explored in many different ways. A new found appreciation for these movies.

I love how you mention Jone's rampage really was just a grief-fueled tantrum, he opted for rage because he couldn't face the reality of his feelings. One of the most understandable villains in fiction I think and one that really does have a well deserved reputation as a self-made monster.
I took British Literature as a dual-credit course in high school, and one of our stories was from the time period of Beowulf. It describes a sailor's experience rowing on a ship, about how even though the experience could be beyond exhausting and brutal, it was more than outweighed by the thrill of surviving a storm, of seeing the fury of nature itself unleashed. It's this brand of love that I think drew a lot of the pirates of Davy Jones' time to the sea, though as Beckett stated in Dead Man's Chest, "The edges of the map are being filled in." Which signifies to me that the Golden Age of Piracy was drawing to a close, further amplified by his words in At World's End: "This is no longer your world, Jones."
The CGI on Jones hadn't ever been matched for quality until recent years. The way he is rendered is incredibly lifelike.

Despite his wickedness, I find it impossible not to pity him. His pain is just so quintessentially human.
He channels into his remaining humanity to enhance his own evil. The only way to be so cruel is to understand the suffering of others. He feels everything.
Davy Jones was one of my favorite villains growing up. His appearance gave me the creeps and his menacing voice, courtesy of Bill Nighy (Georges Claisse (RIP) in the French dub), made him stand out among other villains. I’m glad that the Vile Eye uploaded a video on him. I’m a huge fan of his Analyzing Evil videos, and I hope to see more great ones in the future. On a side note, I’d like to say Rest In Peace to Georges Claisse, the French voice of Davy Jones, who died on November 15, 2021 at 80 years old. He dubbed great villains in French, like Palpatine in Star Wars and Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean.

With Christmas coming just a month's time from now, a villain I would love to see on this would be Mr. Potter from "It's A Wonderful Life".
As for this, Davy Jones is indeed a fantastic villain. He's very imposing and frightening to look at, yet at the same time very tragic as he is also someone consumed by his grief and unable to let go of the past, perfectly symbolized by his locking away his heart.

Davy Jones is indeed a very compelling villain as a picture of the horrifying extremes lost love can drive someone to, while Henry Potter is an analysis-worthy example of how zealotry to self-enrichment and the almighty dollar can be incredibly damaging to an individual and their community, in ways seen and unseen.

I have one Christmas villain planned already but perhaps i'll have to do another!

Another detail I learned about: in an unused clip from At World’s End, when Jack is talking with Becket. Becket makes the claim that Jack had broken a deal between the two of them years ago. Jack responds, dead serious: “You can’t own a person, mate.”
Becket had contracted Jack, back when he was a nobody with a no-name ship trying to get started as a captain. His first contract had been to haul a bunch of slaves as part of the triangle trade. Jack refused and set them free.

As punishment, Becket hunted Jack down, set his ship ablaze, forcing him to watch as its hull blackening from the fire until it sank beneath the waves, and finally, branded Jack a pirate.
One day Calypso literally just had to show for one day out of a hundred. If she had shown up that first day and been absent every other Jones likely would’ve kept on loving her unconditionally. “I love her and she loves me one day she’ll be there waiting,” but merely for her capricious whims she was absent the one and only day that mattered. Thus Jones came to know, “she wasn’t there, she’ll never be there.”
I have said it countless times that Davy Jones is a masterful villain because of his incredible complexity and relatability. This all but confirms that for me. Lovely video

The majority of sailors, especially at the time, distinctly disliked the ocean. And honestly, I can’t blame them.
What hurts the most about Davey Jones is that he's one of the better characters in the series where the sequels around him aren't nearly as good. I realize Disney needed to build a world that these characters live in which is why have the plot points revolving around the East India Trading Company and the Brethren Court, but imagine how great Dead Man's Chest and At World's End could have been if they cut the fluff and just primarily focused on the conflict between Jones vs. therest of the cast of characters
I personally love the complex conflict between the different pirates, the East India Trading Company and Davy Jones. I think this complex game makes the story better.

Especially everything regarding Beckett. Beckett is the opposite to Davy Jones, in a way. Both are evil and cruel, but when Daby Jones knew he was about to die, he reacted in anger and joy when he hurt someone close to Jack. When Beckett knew he was about to die, he froze up. Jones was emotional, Beckett was cold. Both were heartless

Can we take a moment to appreciate that we're watching a video anylizing a villain from a franchise based on a theme park ride. The reason I love the Pirates series (the first three) is because they didn't halfass it in any department especially with the writing and they very easily could have. Many will disagree but I think the original trilogy of Pirates movies is one of the most perfect action adventure trilogies ever made.
It is pretty cool how he is part crab, since Calypso is associated with crabs.
I literally grew up on Pirates of the Caribbean so before I even watched this I was gonna give a like just based off the fact you even touched this subject!

Even almost 20 years later, the CGI on Davy Jones' face is almost as good as with Thanos in Infinity War and Endgame.
That can't be said with films made 2 decades ago with similar tech.

Davy Jones is such a tragic and extremely well fleshed out villain. He was probably a good man before his transformation. A simple man that loved the sea more than anything and just wanted to be in love with someone that loved him the same.

As a sugestion, I'd like to see an analysis on Titan, from Megamind. He's a bit of a meme right now, but I think he breaks the mold for supervilains in a unprecedented way. I mean, what other big main villain can be both cruel AND stupid? His pettiness alone makes him a very unique kind of villain.
Tighten is scary, because of how stupid he is. He thinks only of himself and his desires, without thinking of the consequences of his actions. This means he has no problem using his superpowers to harm anyone who prevents him getting what he wants. That makes him scary. He has very human problems (selfishness, entitlement, anger issues) that are only amplified by his superpowers.

The effects still hold up so well. Better than A lot of CGI nowadays. Seeing these in theatre was epic. The acting is perfect .
Best Pirates antagonist in my opinion.
A line that didn't make it into the final film stated that if Calypso had been there after the first 10 years, Jones would have been able to pass his duties off to someone else. I choose to take this as canon because it was the original authors' intention, it makes Jones that much more sympathetic, and it means that Will could be with Elizabeth once his 10 years were up. I know the fifth film contradicts this, but the fifth film also contradicts Jack's backstory from a fully filmed deleted scene from the third movie, the name of Will and Elizabeth's son from a companion book, and (most importantly) a line from the final cut of Dead Man's Chest that has Tia Dalma state that she gave Jack the compass. You can write the other three things off as non-canon because they weren't in the final cut of any movie, but there is no way for you to write off that line from Tia Dalma. Considering this, I have no issues writing the fifth film off as not canon to the first three and considering those deleted scenes to be canon.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and the fifth film also says that Jack giving away the compass would unleash his greatest fear, even though he gave it away all the time in the second and third movies.
Honestly, that break in continuity has made it impossible to watch that film, which sucks cause Barbossa, to me, had a good send off.

Would anyone else want to see a movie about Davy Jones' life before and during his relationship with Calypso? Just the idea of looking into the life of a man who captured the love of a capricious sea goddess; a captain so formidable that he, his vessel and his punishments for those who wrong him (Kraken and the Locker) become the nightmare of sailors the world over just sounds so amazing. Is it just me?
Brilliant. You absolutely have to do Cutler Beckett as well. He's easily the most interesting and entertaining villain in POTC, in part due to his mysteriousness, as we learn next to nothing about him. He's basically the Lex Luthor of the sea and a dyed-in-the-wool sociopath and megalomaniac, as well as a war criminal. If he were alive today, he'd definitely be tried for crimes against humanity.

I have a different take on the timeline. Binding calypso didn’t just give control of the sea to pirates, but to mankind.
So what if the first brethren did form before the rise of Greece. What do we know about maritime history of that era? People were afraid of the sea, never ventured to far from shore hugging coastlines. In real life we know there was a whole mythology at the time regarding this, everything from falling off the edge of the world to getting devoured by leviathans of the deep. But let’s put this tidbit into the POTC universe. Calypso, the goddess self proclaimed as being changing, harsh, and untameable, was in control of the sea. She struck down those land creatures who dared challenge her control of her realm by sailing too far from shore. That is until she met Davy Jones, a man who had longed to explore the vast blue sea, feel the salt breeze on his face. Maybe he kept returning, maybe he even resisted her attempts to thwart him. Maybe when she sent the kraken to destroy him he instead tamed and befriended the beast. Maybe this is what drew her to him.
Fast forward, a scorned, angry, and heart broken Jones wants revenge against her, and knows just how to do it. The biggest slight against the goddess who punished those who drifted into the sea? Give them control while she was bound to land, to watch in misery as they took over what had once been hers. So he tells them how to bind her, and they can control the waves. They do, and now the ocean is safer. Man can now venture beyond the shallows into open ocean. It takes centuries, but they learn how to build bigger ships, navigate by the stars. Where they once had been locked within sight of land, they now could travel to distant lands, undiscovered continents.
Don’t forget the Bronze Age collapse when sea ppl basically raided ppl back to the Stone Age

I gotta say, the segue into the sponser ads are always butter smooth on this channel. No sudden, annoying, sharp diversion into an ad like on other channels, you always transition so smoothly and even manage to keep a bit of humor about the overarching topic of the video in the ad itself. It's a relatively small thing, all things considered, but thanks for doing that.

One of my favorite cinematic villains honestly- from the design to the acting and backstory Bill Nighy gave him such life.
I, for one, would love to see you do an episode on Q from Start Trek. The psychology side of things might be difficult, since he's essentially an omnipotent and immortal being, making him think very different from other sentient life in the series, but it would definitely be interesting. There is also a good argument that he's not evil at all, though he's certainly very much a villain in a lot of the show, or at the very least, the Heel to Picard's Face (and to a lesser extent, Sisco and Janeway's as well).
Regardless, fantastic work as always man. Keep it up! Your videos are amazing one and all.

I think that the binding of Calypso did Not begin the golden age of piracy, because of a monologue Barbossa has in the 'At World's End':
"In another age, the First Bretheren Court captured the sea goddess, and bound her in her bones." [....] , but opened the door to Beckett, and his ilk! Better were the days when mastery of the seas came not from deals struck with eldritch creatures, but from the sweat of a man's brow and the strength of his back alone."
This means pirates during the years of the movies were not at an advantage against merchants and navies of the time because of their skills at sailing, because sea-going is said to have been much easier. So by this statement, logically it would mean that the golden age of piracy was either before or after the binding of Calypso, and seeing as the movies take place right at the beginning of that age, and how (the terrible) 4th and 5th movies progress the story, it would make sense that the true age of piracy was only beginning.
I would almost suggest that the movies precede the 'golden age', or mark the beginning of it, and that the destruction of the Dutchman, the kraken, and the flagship 'Endeavour' began the golden age of piracy.
