I’ve never read Graysmith’s book, but the movie is one of the most true crime stories ever told. Fincher and his team deserve a lot of props for incorporating many accurate details into the film from the contents of the letter to who survived the spree and didn’t (though some details are changed or fictionalized) and how the investigation sprawled on for years. They even got the SFPD interested enough to reopen the story a few years after the film was released; course no one has still been identified but they did solve the “unsolvable” code
Thanks! And I haven't had much motivation to do that one for some reason. It's definitely on my list, but with the amount of new releases coming out the end of this year, I probably won't end up doing it till next year now.
I actually haven't see this movie yet (which I will need to rectify soon!) and I got a legit chill up my spine when you said that he never got caught. That's pretty scary to know that he's possibly still out there! 😰
@@WhytheBookWins He's dead. It was Arthur Leigh Allen. He died in 1992. The police had him but let him go for reasons that were never fully explained. They'll give a different excuse for letting him go each time they're asked.
I always enjoyed this film, and how Fincher chose to treat this subject. I'm often very wary of films about real life killers, because I don't want to see them sensationalised in any way, but Fincher steered away from doing that, and I agree with you that this is a very fine film. I don't know if you watch Black Mirror, but the Loch Henry episode of the latest season is very good - and a commentary/reflection on the public's appetite for true crime dramas and how this might not be particularly healthy. It's very good. Oh, and I didn't know that detail about CGI-ing Jake Gyllenhaal's hands! I know Fincher is obsessive about detail, but I'm not sure that was necessary!🤚
There's an interesting corollary to the story of Inspector Dave Toschi and the possibly forged Zodiac letter. Some years prior, a writer for the SF Chronicle, Armistead Maupin, had written a series of fictional stories in which he included a character based loosely on Toschi. As you mentioned, Toschi wrote Maupin some "fan letters" purporting to be other people, asking for the character to be brought back. Maupin found out that it was Toschi writing those letters, and he became very angry about that. He felt it was manipulative and underhanded, and Maupin really did not appreciate it. He didn't see the humor in it, if humorous it was meant to be. So, years later, when the new Zodiac letters came out, it was Maupin who suggested that the author of the new letter was Toschi himself. In years since, Maupin admitted he didn't have any evidence to support the claim, but he states to this day that is was not a bad faith accusation just to screw Toschi, since he knew Toschi had done something similar before.
The old lady has lived there for 70 years? Hmmm. That was the Zodiac year of the Snake and snakes eat mice. What do mice like to find? Cheese! And where do you put cheese?? On bread, which is found at the bakery! It was the Old Lady all this time.
They still don't know for sure. The most likely person is Allen but there are other facts that don't match him and match other potential suspects. I think it was Allen but officially if you can't prove it conclusively as a pd you can't officially say it was or wasn't.
Ok, she is explaining nothing? Omg this is stupid..... She is grasping. Ok... so she dies look at any case studies and Police cases.... Ffffff I can not stand that she doesn't stay on topic.....
Another enjoyable enlightening video. Imagine if Zodiac and D.B. Cooper were roommates in late 60's/early 70's. What a laugh filled movie that would make. "The really odd couple". Please cover Auto Focus about the murder of Bob Crane (star of Hogan's Heroes) by his close friend. WARNING: Film is great but contains the strangest try as you might you'll never be able to forget it scene between Greg Kinnear and Willem Dafoe. When you see it you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. 🤡🤡🤡🤡

Love your detailed research, subbed to your channel
Thank you so much!!
Neat video Laura. Do you know when you’re going to do The Outsiders?

Yeah it really is! Hopefully he is now dead, either from natural causes or something else. But who knows 👀

@@abegarfield7030 It wasn't Arthur Leigh Allen.
Robert Graysmith thought it was, but it wasn't.

Yeah I'm totally on the same page! I have only seen random episodes of Black Mirror, but I will look that one up! Thanks for sharing!

What a coincidence, I just watched the movie.
I was not prepared for how scary/gruesome the first part was... 😢😭
Yeah it's very chilling! Same with the lake scene

🤣 you solved it!
You said that they never found him.
But I just saw a documentary on Netflix showing it was Leigh Allen.
Has this on come to light in 2024?
Hm yeah at the time I made this video it seemed they still didn't for sure know his identity.

Yeah, I got bored and quit.
We should have a game and see who can stand it all the way through and give a prize for that.
