like mitch said - very confusing to follow but the first three movies are probably the most enjoyable to watch and Fu Sheng isn’t really trying to be comedic here in fact kinda takes a back seat most of the time 😮

Fair enough, I look forward to all of the films, but good to know ahead of time to not expect much from the last two 😅.
And oh really? Thank Gren Phalder for that! Fu Sheng can take all the backseats he likes IMO haha.

Probably I am wrong but The Brave Archer had a different name . Something like Kung Fu Warrior or Warlord .

Yes, apparently it was also known as "Kungfu Warlord". Very intriguing alternative title for sure!

Hello sir ,where to start .... OK .
Firstly ,these films are mostly directed by Chang Cheh and are based on Louis Cha/ Jin Yong novel Legend of the condor heroes, which is a huge tome . The films are more wuxia than Kung fu ,you should expect an element of bewildering fantastical nonsense ,these films can be hard to follow ,the opening sequence of the first movie has about 30 characters ,some of which you won't see in the film and many appear in future installments .
By this point in his career ,Cheh was not the innovator he used to be , he returned to wuxia after Chor Yuen bought it back ,the irony is Chang Cheh actually killed it off in the 60's.
Fu Sheng is over shadowed by the female leads, (he plays a fool) and they are played by a couple of different actresses, the actress in the first film he had an affair with in real life. In the 4th film ,Kwok plays the main character to add to the confusion.
Trying to follow the intricate plot will make your head hurt , like a lot. Some aspects of it are just bonkers , characters appear, then are forgotten and this is relentless throughout the series. In fact Fu Sheng isn't even in Little dragon maiden at all.
There is some top notch action in these films ,number 3 has loads of fighting in it and a ton of Venoms .
Ranking ,Little dragon maiden ,2, 3, 1 and Brave archer and his mate - which I think is actually not that great .
I actually love these films ,they are very confusing but you have to watch them in a different way , if you look for plot holes your head will blow up. And i probably like this set more than the iron triangle box .
If you want me to sum up how bat sh1t they are ,at the end of the first film Fu Sheng has a duel with someone that involves recite poetry , banging a stick in time to a beat for a whole year and cooking . Some of that statement maybe true . Enjoy Jessie !

Oh wow, that sounds wild haha. Thank you so much for the indepth explanation of what to expect from these films. I had no idea what I was in for lol.
I'll try not to over examine the plot or figure out where certain people are / aren't. I do want to enjoy these films (especially for the price tag they come with haha).
What makes you like "And His Mate" the least? Bad acting or boring plot or something else?
Also, wow, I'm shocked to hear that Brave Archer won you over as opposed to the Iron Triangle set! Is it really that much of a lackluster bunch of films?

@@thesharphandpath I think And his mate is just poor, it drags, the swapping of Fu Sheng to Kwok as the main character is just stupid and jarring. In fact there is an awful lot of actors being swapped to play different characters throughout the series. Ti Lung is in the opening of the first film, but he doesn't appear until part 3.
I think the iron triangle box is too macho for me and a good few are set in modern day period - which I don't tend to like, don't get me wrong there are some truly superb films, but I binge watched them, which was the wrong thing to do. By the end I was crying for strong female characters.
Out of the Brave Archer films, you will probably enjoy 3 most, lots of action with the Venoms and it's all fist and feet.
Oh and Fu Sheng does use a bow and arrow right at the start of the first film.
Little dragon maiden is very different, it's not directed by Chang Cheh and it features one of the most well known and loved things ever to happen in a Shaw film. When you watch it, you will know exactly what I mean, ha ha!

Ah okay, that might not be a huge problem for me though (as I love Philip Kwok) 😁 Ti Lung is okay, I could take him or leave him for the most part. He doesn't have the most memorable face IMO.
"Too Macho" oof... that's unfortunate to hear. I like a strong female lead myself as well. I find cis men can get up their own ass when it comes to being tough and trying to prove their masculinity (which makes it seem so fragile and easy to invalidate). Sorry for getting political btw. Just my own personal societal issues lol!
Can't wait to see Little Dragon Maiden in which case, if it's infamous for something so talked about in the Martial Arts Cinema Circle 😃😃😃

@@thesharphandpath I didn't used to be the greatest Ti Lung fan but as I got more into Shaw back catalog he's become a real favourite of mine, and like Fu Sheng he seemed to have been cast aside by Chang Cheh - both actors landed up working with Chor Yuen in the later years.
Little dragon maiden was directed by Hua Shan, who made a bunch of late Shaw films - Soul of the sword (Shout set volume 3) is brilliant.
As for Fu Sheng, one of his best is Deadly breaking sword, that's a great film even if you aren't a fan of his work.

I can tolerate Fu Sheng when he's serious, but even then, he still tends to do that big goofy smile that steals any credibility, lol. To be fair, the guy is MILES beyond me in physical condition and (probably) Martial Arts prowess.
And ah.. okay, both of those "sword" films seem to be in the 3rd Volume. Haven't quite got there yet. Still have two more films from the 2nd set to watch 😅😅 Takes me a while to get thru them. Can't really binge watch Shaw films, and I also have 3 kids I'm currently taking care of on my own (as my wife is in the hospital taking Chemo for Leukemia)
