Great guide. I found it easier to drive the pin in with the vise. First give it couple taps to have it in place. Then use the vise to drive it in effortlessly. Just don’t forget to use a pair of wood to avoid damaging the finish.
I just put together my first lower and it was that damn trigger guard pin that gave me the hardest time.
Wish I saw this first. Lesson learned. Thanks.
kinda funny being myself a production assembly employee for some 25 years, that people who get ""fixtures" to assemble stuff is at home is funny to me. lol
Risk of trashing lower installing and removing trigger gaurd pins is the most anxiety provoking parts of a build. Bust a pin ear off and OOOPS there goes the build.
Card trick deserves a sub
What can't they all just charge the extra $5 and put the spring loaded pin it so you never have to worry. Lol.
I love the playing cards trick. Simple, cheap and brilliant.
I marred my finish. If I ever have to do it again, I’m buying the pin pusher. I’m scared that my trigger ears are weaker now. Is that possible? I know it will never be a problem unless I try to change it. I’m just asking in case I ever get tired of fde.
Great- you showed me the easy side… what about the other pin that can only come out 1 way?… why would you not show us that?
It's a button, push the button and slide out the trigger guard.
@@fckjoebdn1776 thank you- I did figure it out. Sorry- one of those things that’s so simple, but I never saw it explained (because it was so commonly known).
@@Fengshawn86 it’s my first time dealing with a one sided roll pin. Since it acts as a button, Did you hit the top of the roll pin or in the inside ? Thx in advance
the front has a screw? on a anderson
They couldn't have made this any harder. What the hell where they thinking when they designed this?
Me watching this realizing that I’ve put in roll pins wrong my whole life… I just brute forced them with a standard screwdriver and small carpentry hammer 😂😭
Thank you ,hate that job 🤕
why dont they use screw instead?
You are not properly installing the pin correctly.
This is why people have problems in the field / at the range watching youtube and google gunsmiths.
How do you take out the other side tho
and if you would like less parts on your AR lower receiver buy one that comes with a fix trigger guard
My first one had a set screw/ with a spring loaded pin in the back. Super easy. 2nd lower was a Crusader. Oddly one of only a few spikes makes with guard for some reason. It is easier to not do it lol
I like mil-spec and don't mind installing a trigger guard though I did have trouble getting a Magpul pin in. I wonder why they just didn't design the back to use a spring and detent too like the front instead of a roll pin.
Dang it, i was trying to come up with a design for a tool to do this...again late to the party 🤔😏😆
How do you remove the front pin in the trigger guard?
Sorry but all this can be avoided by just using the AK platform. Need a gas tube? Cut a garden hose. Need a recoil spring? Find a port-o-john and remove the spring on the door... etc. Lol. Sad but true. Kalashnikov beat America's backside in 1947 and again in 1974.
If the AR could be simplified it'd reign Supreme but as of this writing the AK is still the only rifle to ever be put on a nations flag.
The AK trigger guard is even more complicated than this cause it's riveted. You can find roll pin punches, a vise, or c-clamp at any hardware store but not a riveting jig or punch set.
No wonder AR guys get clowned on so much. Half this video was an infomercial.
I put ARs together with scrap wood, vise, brass punch set, 16oz ball peen, hex key set, Brownells AR wrench, and a torque wrench.
Some lubriplate grease, masking tape to prevent marring while you're punching in the bolt release roll pin, thread locker and you're set.
Edit: $2 hardware store clevis pin for the pivot pin spring install.
SOTAR is a tool retailer? Had no idea.
What is the appropriate punch to remove both pins? I got a factory trigger guard that I want to upgrade, I'm purchased a tool kit just for this but I can't find anywhere which punch I need to remove the pins. Thank You in Advance
Why’s the caption say “removal”? Literally just removed one punch. And then argerahgahlagababba to get the other pin out😂
OMG I wish I would have found this a week ago O.O
Same here. That pin was the hardest part building my first lower.
I do something similar where I use a magazine or two (Guitar Player, if you're curious) under the ear of the receiver. Great video!
Dude! I was borderline ready to just superglue the trigger guard on due to fear of breaking it and/or spending $40 on the block but the playing card trick worked like a charm!! Thanks so much!
After having bought a couple of the trigger guard roll pin install/removal tools I will never go back to the hammer and punch method. Definitely worth the investment.
My Magpul roll pin is way too tight. I need a bigger hammer apparently.
Anyone watching this needs the answer in 5 seconds not 5 minutes
Hi. What size is the roll pin? Thanks.
A C clamp works like a charm to push in the trigger guard roll pin. Just slip some card stock between the lower and the c clamp to prevent marking. Takes a few try’s to get the swivel head to stay aligned on the pin. But once it is you can crank that pin right in flush.
Did you use a punch to start the pin, or just use the clamp for the entire process?
Let’s say, hypothetically, you were to have an ear break. How would one go about repairing that? Not just as good as new but acceptable to keep using the lower.
why couldnt you weld it back together?
@@Mc-cs6yr I’m sure I could…long term. Until then JB Weld. It held nice.
Cool, how do you take the front on off? Has no exit
On a standard lower, take a 3/32 punch and push down on it. It's a spring-loaded pin. Push down until the pin clears the ear and rotate it out.
not all heroes wear capes!
I marred my trigger guard I’m 99% it’s just surface damage. I’m gonna swap out the pin with a screw, but not without that pusher. 🤞the pusher doesn’t break it. I can also just leave it alone, but that not gonna happen.
Does your set of punches (and stand) come from anywhere in particular? I've been searching for a reliable all-inclusive punch set specifically for the AR platform but cannot find one (or rather, don't know whats worth purchasing and what isn't). Thanks in advance :)
Did you ever find what you were looking for im starting to build my own ar and need to find a reliable punch set as well, thanks
What trigger guard is that?
Thx
If I had to guess, its a Magpul. thanks for watching.
Great video, as are all of Chad's videos! I'm new to AR builds and am wondering if the "starter" punch is commercially available? Thanks for the help.
Thx for sharing....didn't think I could trash lower...helped a lot
Yeah me either, definitely gonna pump the brakes on the torque LoLz
So the front of my guard has a roll pin as well there no set screw how tf am I supposed to install it
I've been pounding on this pin for the last hour and it still has about 1mm sticking out of the side. I'm going to have to steal Mjolnir from Thor if I ever want a chance of getting this pin in.
You didn't show how to remove and install the forward pin/screw
Just my opinion. Never use the straight flat version trigger gaurds that come in the budget lower parts kits. Spend $10 or so and get the magpul or equivalent guard. Trust me, you will be glad you did. Throw those cheap straight guards in the trash. They will rub your finger raw. Just my 2¢
Well, I just bought a MP guard to replace the stock one on my rifle, but watching this has me 2nd guessing doing the work myself. I don’t have a set of proper punches...the deck of cards I can swing tho.
@@backbonz A cheap set of punches doesn't cost much. An auto parts store or home depot maybe. Use a small hammer to lightly tap it in. I always put gun oil on the pin to help it in. Put some masking tape around the area you are working on to help keep from scratching if punch slips. You only need to tap in flush with hole in lower. No need to have exact size punch to counter sink it down deep. You can always sink it deeper later. You can do it!
@@tonyjr6841 Every single part is valuable, throw nothing away. I actually like the flat trigger guard for the classic look. It works well enough for the troops.
@@backbonz Get a set of punches at Harbor Freight for cheap.
@@TheTexasViking HF doesn't carry all 3 types of punches shown in the video. Only the basic flat-faced punches. They also do not carry brass punches.
Yeah I couldn't get the bastard out so I figured I should look it up... Thanks!
I was careful and used a notepad and the right sized punches. Still wished I would’ve watched this first lol
I drill my trigger guard out and press in a threaded insert on each side, then install using screws.
The right tools and a little know-how makes all the difference.👍🏽✌🏾
Dude I was messing with mine for at least 30 min before finding your video, ❤
Would love to attend your school sometime, just learned something new! Thanks for the valuable knowledge you provide to the 2A community sir.
I grinded out a hockey puck put a hole in it . It's legit 🧐
Man - you should’ve removed that whole piece ! Thanks for the video though
What are the 2 little ones above the trigger
hmm wonder if we can use a sight pusher tool
I'm at this point now and I'm a bit nervous.
Thank you, I was worried and this saved my bacon
Nice trick with the cards man!
Good video.
Front pin?
The other side of the trigger guard is that always put in with a set screw.
Just save me 40 bucks or a new lower
📍 sizes mm
What if you can’t get the pin out? I beat on mine for an hour and couldn’t make any progress
Sure you had the right size punch?
One to small will sit in the middle of the roll pin rather than push the edges.
Also when installed the edge may have been rolled over so it needs to come back out the same direction it was pushed in. Both ends could be rolled over some. If that's the case you will have to straighten it as you drive it out.
@@matthewbeaver5026 that’s exactly what was wrong, I ended up getting it out not long after I posted the comment. Thank you anyways.
Great video!!!
Too fast
Thanks for the video!
He only took out one pin tf
The other pin is a simple screw that comes out with an allen wrench
Always educational Thank you! Dreaming of some day taking your classes . I live in N.H. but truly worth the travel for the knowledge . Stay safe brothers .
If only I’d had this video earlier... Well at least it was only an anderson lower I’d broken the ear on, and Danial Defense makes a pistol grip with an integrated trigger guard.
Thanks for showing how to do the SELF EXPLANATORY one and skipping the difficult one👍🏿✊🏿💉💉
🤣That’s great ar build junkies is teaching democrat communist how to build ars! I hope this is a troll account lmfao🤣
Nice🤟🏽. Can you share some tricks for gas block roll pin🤔🤔
What is your thought on the Present Arms Gunner's trigger block??
The Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport and Sport II have the integral trigger guard. So does the M&P 10. One less thing to worry with. But this is good information. I'm currently working on an AR15A4 clone that has the milspec trigger guard.
I love sotar
This dude doesn’t know how to remove a trigger guard 😂😂🚛
Be sure to let him know. His name is Chad Albrecht. SOTAR.
cant escape Chad from SotAR lol
