It is actually called "Boss Rush Mode", and it wasn't fully finished when they had to meet the deadline to publish the game. They wanted to add more levels and other things to it. It was supposed to be selectable from the main menu after completing the story mode. Since they didn't want to put a unfinished level set in the game, the sneaky devs snuck it in like this. The only question I still have is how that dedicated fan figured out how to access it. If still shocks me.
If I had to guess, somebody took a peak inside the coding of the game and seen the survival mode in there and found it's oddly specific triggers, whoever it was is a legend.
to this day i think this is the best secret ever in a videogame. it's well hidden and is amazingly rewarding. too bad the gaming industy is all about the money instead of creativity

This was found with hacks at 1st but eventually someone playing around a year later figured out a weird combo using the axe in certain places to do it. At 1st it was in a certain order but after ppl making mistakes still gettin in, we discovered it didnt really matter the order except the last barrel.
This reminds me of the Black ops zombies easter eggs steps. When this came out I was just a kid, I didn't even knew about this area, even less about the secret. Now I compare them to the BO zombies franchise because I always wonder "How the hell does this people realize they have to do all this steps, in a specific order, in the right place in the rigth time, to discover these things".

Prima guides didn't even find it. This secret is basically on the same level as the secret swastika room in Super Mario World.

Yes in that order if you mess up you half to re set it by going out of the area and trying again I learned that the hard way
