+Colin Cochran It's learning about the love and passion behind creating this scene that really warms my heart and makes me happy. These people obviously care a lot about the originals, and it makes me feel like the franchise is in good hands.
Some animators looking for work of any kind and exposure tend to work for free now. VFX guys don't really get paid any more. I've done two movies with no money and next to nothing. Nobody seems to want to pay traditional artists, while CGI guys will command thousands. Colin Cochran
+ot0m0t0 why would it continue on from a game they were playing 30 years ago? pretty sure they would have played quite a few new games on it since then
+ArnoldTohtFan Ever since Chewbacca witnessed the murder of so many Ewoks, he didn't feel like playing games anymore... But nah, you're totally right. It's a nice touch and even knowing Han lost the falcon at some point down the line, you have to figure they at least played one other game since A New Hope.
Anyone who says "Ep VII is nothing but a cash grab" should see this. The amount of pure enthusiasm and LOVE for the originals by recreating this scene in the way the original was created, which only lasts a few seconds anyways just shows how MUCH the people behind the scenes cared for this movie. This could have easily been a one man, two day animating job in Maya (ofc I'm exaggerating a bit, don't take it word for word). Instead they went above and beyond to recreate this short, but memorable scene for us fans.
+Netsuko Yoshikawa Just because the people who worked on it put effort and passion into it doesn't mean that Disney's initial decision to make this movie was rooted in making profits.
+Babalooza lol.. okay so tell me. Which big movie ISN'T made on the decision to make money? Let me give you a hint: none :P That's like saying you like good food, but your initial decision to eat was because you are hungry. That doesn't make it any worse if the food was still good!
+Babalooza +Netsuko Yoshikawa I can see the underlying miff that Lucas holds towards the new franchise (he says he's good with it - but he admits he would have gone a different direction). Firstly, I was *thoroughly entertained* by TFA (I even cheered at the holochess sequence!) but it did not reach very far in plot and 'character dimensionality';. Even _'the force'_ was not further developed in this film. Because of these shortcomings, this addition will not be considered foundational to the universe when all the chips have been counted. Lucas can see that. Hell, he should even get a script credit for the plagiarism that the script makes off with. *spoiler alert* Look to the loss of the franchise's highest paid actor (highest paid anything for that matter). Beancounter Mickey Mouse can now cast an unknown for the Young Solo Chronicles and continue to rake $ in! I do hope the next movies can stretch artistic and character limitations put into effect in this addition to the Star Wars universe.
I like Brett Foxwell's reaction at 22:30 when Frank says it was easy to put the armatures in the center of the mold. It was a real, "If you say so!" reaction.
Mad respect to Frank Ippolito for keeping his secret! I've watched loads of videos with Frank and had no idea. And grats to Frank for working on Star Wars! The joy of a fellow nerd living the dream is beautiful to see.
Also, the Brett Foxwell would make a great podcast guest. Him and Adam talking about Star Wars, armature, and tools on Still Untitled? Can this happen please?
A whole bunch of Star Wars nerds geeking out over being able to participate in the resurrection of their beloved franchise. I love it. It's always nice to see people with a true passion for their work.
Photogrametry is really interesting and its available for free to try out. If you want to get into it all you need is a camera (even your phone will do) and a program that generates the mesh (Autodesk 123D Catch) is a nice free one.
If all of the holochess have an armature inside with the ball and socket tecnique, i really loved to see it in a next video for inspiring me in building mine
I love this! Since everyone did such an amazing job recreating these figures and using lasting techniques to preserve them, I really hope there will be a collector set of these puppets for the consumers to buy!
Mr. Big is known as Mantellian Savrip and the one he body-slams is Kintan Strider. One of them is Molator. The stegasaurus looking one is Houjix. One is Grimtaash. One is Ghhhk. The tall one with the spear is Monnok. The one with lobster like claws is Ng'ok. These are all official names from the SWCCG game.
This is movie magic right here. So much awesome effort to make a scene that only appears for a few seconds in the movie. Most of today's directors would have used CGI...
thanks a lot for this video it's so original and interested, I wish you guys have one video talk about armature machining in details that will be the best armature machining video on youtube !
My twelve year old self just had a nerdgasm watching this. This is everything I wanted to do as a kid. Instead, I moved to Cambodia and became a humanities and literature professor.
This is at once the most ridiculous thing - and the most awesome thing I have seen in a really really long time .. The amount of trouble that they went to to recreate a scene - that flowed on from the original - is fucking insane .. Even with all the absolutely ridiculous die-hard fans out there - I cannot think that anyone would have been able to tell that the models were not identical .. but .. They are such nerdists that it is more important to them than it is to the movie-going audience that they get it right .. AWESOME!!!!
this is great and all but it's kinda disappointing that such a great artistic effort was just for a forced cameo, which could just as well have been made with CG (i was 100% sure it was CG when i saw the movie) hopefully they get used again and better in the sequels
+Francesco Gavardi Probably won't be used again, also there is a specific look to the original stop motion animation that is impossible to replicate in CGI.
+bugzkilla Have you seen the Lego movie before? It's all CGI but they use techniques like lowering the framerate to make it look like stop motion. I bet they could easily make this in CG and make it look like stop motion. They already have the 3D scans of the original models so all they would have to do is animate them digitally.
+bugzkilla There is nothing in stop motion that is impossible to replicate in CGI. If the "specific look" you're talking about is the holographic effect, it's just lighting and layers. On the other hand, there are literally countless things in CG that stop motion can't replicate. This is coming from a guy with a degree in animation, majoring in traditional 2D and stop motion.
GuyWithAnAmazingHat No that is not what I was referring to. Animating something frame by frame, posing it with your hands and taking a picture does in fact look different than moving a model frame by frame in a digital space. Stop motion looks more "hand made" in comparison to CGI. That is why they went back to how the scene was made in A New Hope so it is doing it justice and actually does in fact look the same.
bugzkilla The "hand made" effect is in actual fact human error in positioning, dust particles, flickering lighting and other imperfections. All these can be replicated in CGI. And as brickman409 mentioned, the Lego movie actually did a really great job fooling many people into thinking it was actual stop motion.
23:36 to 23: 41 such an AcKWARD moment, the sculptor guy on the right is so excited about that SPECIAL FANDOM DAY in his career and he gets no happy feedback from the asian interviewer guy, nothing, nada, zilch.....you can plainly see the blue shirt guy swallowing his saliva in deep regret and shame of having allowed his pure and sincere enthusiasm in front of asian technical guy. go blue shirt dude, let your love shine thru!
Can someone from tested get these made into action figures to scale of the props they used , that would be awesome , and they shouldn't have 20 millions points of articulation either just straight head swivel and up and down joints that would be awesome
also i figured some sort of cad would have been employed for the armiture making since being a virual enviorment they could line up the basic skeletons within the skin models near perfectly. maybe could have helpted get more realistic movement as they could plan out proper muscle groups they could make out f a deformable material that can simulate muscle flexing:D
The armature looks fiddly to make but fairly simple, I say simple because i am a CNC operator programer. What i can not see so well is how they made the balls for the ball joints, Were they ball bearings perhaps, that had beed drilled and threaded. Questions questions, How do you hold and lock down a small ball bearing for drilling and tapping?
I'm only glad I just saw the movie before seeing this posted or it would have been a huge spoiler. I know your excited by the effects used in the new movie, but isn't their a way you could warn people that your about to rip the magic parts away from the movie?
hope th CG odelers go to Zbrush ZSumit 2016 to talk about what they did:D would love to hear the finer points of preserving artifacts and recreating them for future use:D
Awesome, you guys. Great interviews and great interviewees too.
Props for Frank for making Brett relax a little bit!
such amazing work and talent packed into just a 10 second sequence in the film. easy to imagine why the budgets for these movies become so massive
+Colin Cochran It's learning about the love and passion behind creating this scene that really warms my heart and makes me happy. These people obviously care a lot about the originals, and it makes me feel like the franchise is in good hands.
+Netsuko Yoshikawa agreed
+Colin Cochran The budgets are massive thanks to overpriced CGI I think you'll find Stop motion is vastly more budget friendly.
+Sten43 Since 1977 i don't know what costs are involved for either case, but my gut is telling me this fidelity of stop motion isn't cheap
Some animators looking for work of any kind and exposure tend to work for free now. VFX guys don't really get paid any more. I've done two movies with no money and next to nothing. Nobody seems to want to pay traditional artists, while CGI guys will command thousands. Colin Cochran
Very cool. I'm so glad Frank got to be a part of such a wonderful little moment in the film.
When I saw it, the first thing that went through my mind was wondering if they continued on from the last fight. Yup. Brilliant work.
+ArnoldTohtFan Maybe he loaded a save game when it fired up?
Anyone who says "Ep VII is nothing but a cash grab" should see this.

precisely, but some are more money-driven than others. This is why we get 5 marvel movies each year and only 1 Citizen Kane.
+Babalooza +Netsuko Yoshikawa I can see the underlying miff that Lucas holds towards the new franchise (he says he's good with it - but he admits he would have gone a different direction).

Adam is the only reason I watch tested videos
This is amazing stuff. The amount of work these guys did for a scene that lasts barely a minute, is just incredible.
I really hope we get special features like this on the Blu Ray :)
I like Brett Foxwell's reaction at 22:30 when Frank says it was easy to put the armatures in the center of the mold. It was a real, "If you say so!" reaction.

These are the type of videos Tested NEED to focus on in my opinion. This video was superb!
cheers :)

+John514 great info. You may have just created a career with that one.
"...all for just a few seconds of just one shot..."
Welcome to the animation industry.

I love this!

When i saw the stop motion puppets on the big screen i got so exited i almosy cried
Now that was fun. You could do shows like this all day.
this is really amazing. Thanks for not ruining the movie!
The "Um..." Bros @19:30 were on
🔥FIRE!🔥
🏆🎉BEST PART🎊🥇🥳👍 You WIN!

Frankie stepping into the hall of legends - well done man. you can tease Adam now - seeing as how you worked on a star wars thats actually good ;)
I think this is the best video you guys have ever made.
23:00 in ahahahaha my mind is too dirty
Hahahahahaha it so wrong
i was about to comment.
Hahaa
I don't see it
+Sean Anthony you have a pure sighted mind
Tested best video in a while ! Cheers frank
This is movie magic right here. So much awesome effort to make a scene that only appears for a few seconds in the movie. Most of today's directors would have used CGI...
+Tested is really one of the best content creators on youtube. Incredibly interesting videos non stop.
just noticed those inverted wing-nuts at 21'37",never seen that before, usually use C form washers/ drilled plate
This is the kind of TESTED I like. Great job guys!!!
thanks a lot for this video it's so original and interested, I wish you guys have one video talk about armature machining in details that will be the best armature machining video on youtube !
Thank you!!!! I love this. I just saw the movie and this made my day. I'm so happy to learn the background of the chessboard.
My twelve year old self just had a nerdgasm watching this. This is everything I wanted to do as a kid. Instead, I moved to Cambodia and became a humanities and literature professor.
That's pretty cool aswell.
What made you change your mind?
+Denny Jones What a fuckin coincidence, it's a small world. I'm a student in cambodia o.O
Pernicus New small world indeed
I love adams enthusiasm
Maybe they can get more use out of them in the films to come.
awesome video, love the passion that goes on behind the scenes with movies like these!
+Ethan Ashton Hey Ethan!
+Ethan Gordon hey! nice to meet you!
Spiffy - the making of movies is more interesting than actually watching most of them
Omg! I whant one of those puppets so much! They're so cool!
Great job Joey.
Such an animation nerd :) loved every moment of these interviews
+Tested - Ohhh it's great!!Amazing art .You need more videos about armatures and casting fully explaining ,loved it and you need a lot of likes!!!
since they have all the 3d models now, Lucasfilm will sell this toys?
That was super cool!
For the next remaster of SW: update the holo-chess pieces using *this* technology.
Great video Tested!! So interesting and educational!

Sweet No Doubt shirt.
This is amazing! Hopefully after Fury Road and TFA there'll be a revival of practical effects
Fukken hell Frank, nice going.

Phil tippet the legend!!!!
+Josep Josep I think the girl at 13:07 is her daughter!
Awesome! Thanks for this.
Amazing stuff here
This is so cool.
Dope No Doubt tee
How do they paint the silicone ?
You paint with more pigmented silicone. It can be diluted down with Naphtha to air brush. You can use 100% silicone caulking from home depot.
I can't be the only one thinking that they would buy a set of those models if they were made available, am I?
Is the mold release just 100% dish soap or a mixture of soap and water?
Can someone from tested get these made into action figures to scale of the props they used , that would be awesome , and they shouldn't have 20 millions points of articulation either just straight head swivel and up and down joints that would be awesome
Everytime someone says “you know “ take a shot.
was this filmed when the movie was still in production?
also i figured some sort of cad would have been employed for the armiture making since being a virual enviorment they could line up the basic skeletons within the skin models near perfectly.
maybe could have helpted get more realistic movement as they could plan out proper muscle groups they could make out f a deformable material that can simulate muscle flexing:D
22:57 Frank and Beans anyone?! LOL!

+mardrom1 OMG you can just buy all this stuff. no need to mill drill turn anything. armaverse1.mybigcommerce.com/categories/Phase-3-Parts/
Does anyone know where in the new movie this scene is?
Everyone check for new Star Wars characters in the background for the next movies.
wow I love it .
This really is the Star wars that were made by fans, for the fans.
I really really want to do this for my life.
i have a feeling on low budget animations a lego armiture would work in a pinch
Those armatures look kind of like Lego Technics.
So modular, modelers replacing sculptors. Go Technology!
"Excuse Me Mr." you're "Looking Hot" in that shirt, I think it's giving me a "Staring Problem". I would go "Home Now" but I'm "Trapped In a Box."
well forgive me for making a pun using song titles.
***** maybe I wasn't clear what the quotation marks meant. I was quoting the names of songs from the Band No Doubt
Well, to each their own I guess.
i wonder what kind of paint they used for stopmotion puppets
Pigmented silicone in this case.
Awsome
CHEWBACCA'S BLASTER PLEASE!
you didn't even get shots of the puppets?
I'm only glad I just saw the movie before seeing this posted or it would have been a huge spoiler. I know your excited by the effects used in the new movie, but isn't their a way you could warn people that your about to rip the magic parts away from the movie?
What the heck is that at 23:00?
Hi Adam
Could anyone help me? I just wanna know how do they put color on silicone after casting.
pauze at 22:57 ....If that thing is part of a chess game, than I am sure his bisschop is exposed...........
hope th CG odelers go to Zbrush ZSumit 2016 to talk about what they did:D would love to hear the finer points of preserving artifacts and recreating them for future use:D
Fun game:
Start with number 0
Whenever someone in the video bobs their head affirmatively add 1 to the starting value 0.
Comment your score here.
start with 0, add 1 whenever the armature guy says um
lol, stickers on the webcams of the laptops, paranoia is great in these ones.
well the rouge 1 trailer came out . who's watching in 2016 ?
Purpill get a life. that was really interesting Norm thanks for sharing I have not seen the movie yet.
All five seconds of it lol
Can't believe that they use the same software that i use crappy home made stuff dragon frame stop motion
22:57 ... my dirty mind got me again.
I wish I can meet the Myth busters
23:00 tho
Why does Adam look like he was green-screened and comped in? Is it just strange lighting?
Star wars is stop motion animation?
Um and then um also um but then um 😂😂😂
SOooooo much work for 10 seconds of footage in the film...That must mean there is gonna be more chess in the next few. BB-8 vs Chewie?
...um.
Just what the fuck is the point of the two laptops in the foreground?
+ Tested -
