I'm 56 and we were using this server in my youth. I believe it was called a shooting server then. At least when it was taught to me. Unless it's a variation of the shooting serve then I suppose you could call it new. Anyway, not an important point. Though I think you are both doing a great job. I particularly appreciate the drills you publish. Thanks keep it up.
I was going to say that in the 2001 All England MS Final, I remember Chen Hong getting faulted twice on his forehand drive serve. I also remember Cai Yun using a more conventional backhand drive serve. What was clever about Cai Yun's drive serve was that he got up on his tip toes before serving, making his waist higher up, and allowing for a flatter drive crossover.
The reaction of the 'victim's of the serve is funny! The clip where the serve won the match was really cool! I had to watch it a few times where he chucks his racket in disgust and giggle!
It annoys my opponents as it flusters many if they aren't consistently prepared with the stance or racquet misplaced. I sometimes stand back a bit to get a flatter faster trajectory.
Thanks for this toturial, I practice this drill and it does bring me some scores in games. I know this channel from BiliBili and have already smashed the subscribe button, ha!! Love badminton, love watching pro game, and definately will support you in future tournaments.
If I hit hard in this serve, is it considered fault? Is there any rule of hitting action.. instead of squeezing fingers, I use the wrist whip.. Is this fault?? (Consider the shuttle fell inbound and service height is correct and it is a single continuous motion- no stops in between)
For opponents with normal reflex, it's a deadly shot for server (with opponents do a quick cross court mid court smash) - exactly like what happened at the end of the video
Don't worry, notifications are on 🙌nice video guys, as you say the key is to make all your serves look the same :) I will need to practice this one to perfect it I think!
Hey.. I recently started following you guys... You both are doing as a great as this serve... Can you please make a video on how to return this serve on backhand side. Thanks in advance
Thanks Sahil! We've also had quite a few people comment this so we will look to in the future! Have a read of the comments for the discussion on that :)
i tried using this serve today but my coaches said that it is a service fault because my elbow was kind of snapping or i was doing a jerk movement with my elbow. can u help me out with it. @Badminton Insight
I don't see how it is advantageous to short or tall players. Unless someone can enlighten me. Greg? Jenny? With the new rule everyone serves from the same height giving the same flattest angle possible. Unlike the old rules it replaced which distinctly favours taller players whose last rib or earlier rule of waist height is higher than shorter players, though negligible in my opinion unless you are a foot taller than the average Joe. What the new rule does negate is the guess work that service judges used to have to make in deciding where the rib or waist of each player is. Going by the waistline of a players shorts or skirt is not reliable as we all wear our clothes differently and if the top is not tucked in, then good luck guessing. And since I'm feeling uncharitable. When service judges used to put up a board, only he can see if someone actually faulted. Whether his board was actually parallel to the floor or aimed at the right spot who can tell? And I suspect, and one or two service judges comes to mind, those who likes to call a fault at least once at critical points in each game. I often wondered if they did that so that the camera gives them their 5 seconds of fame and having their names mentioned. Among the hundreds of officials I recall only one or two with such tendencies. So the new rule may hopefully keep the attention on the players and seriously minimise officials having any bearing on any games.
@@kimyeap1124 I'm thinking if I'm a very short player then 1.15m I may be serving close to chest level while if I'm a very tall player 1.15m I will be serving closer to my waist level. Looks like I need to bring a measuring tape to the badminton court next time I play to check out how this affects my serve!
@@kimyeap1124 A drive serve is much easier when you can serve above waist at 1,15; it was virtually impossible for small player before the rule change since theri waist was perhaps at 1m without commiting a foul.
In what significant way does it favour short players? The service height remains the same for all players. Therefore, the flattest angle would remain the same. Got to stick up for us shorties. The most obvious advantage for shorties is being able to play the flat game with more comfort not having to bend the knee as much. I suppose the serve will be a disadvantage to Peter Crouch height players who will have to serve on their knees.
We will be doing a video on how to return the flick serve very soon as this will include some tips for the drive serve! For now we could suggest trying to always be half ready for it and hit with pace back at the server! As we mentioned in the video it is very difficult to try and play a soft, controlled return from it!
The new fixed height service rule has been in international tournaments since December 2018. It is the responsibility of individual nations to adopt it into their domestic tournaments.
i liked the way u guys explained but the video never showed how u guys should serve with a close up pf server which in case you guys are. i kept waiting for that part where u should I belive showed where to stand where to keep the shuttle on racket the angle or part of racket we would be placing it. hope so I am positive that you guys could edit or put a new video instead of match videos for serving.
To the receiver it looks like it was illegal (service fault - too high) and I suspect, in the amateur game at least, the suspicion is well-founded 😉 To achieve that trajectory from below the waist (or even 1.15m) when the net is 1.55m is tricky and it happens so fast, who can really spot a fault?
OMG I am a good player, but I can't place my cork while servicing at 'T' On a friendly match, I just go for the fast flick and make the cork to the last end of the court Then my opponent said that it's a fault and the cork should either be so low (to the height of net) or high. I feel betrayed now🥲🥲

Definitely will be!

How do you return this serve? Years ago when I played I'd always have a problem with this when opponents would use it on me.
Many players in my club still get angry and irritated if someone doing this serve.
This serve slays some opponents, and I 😉 applying deception. Another great clip.
Thanks Dave, it sure does 😁
Hha love the clips in the video, especially at the end!! 😆

This could be really useful to compensate for my lack of a long serve, so I can add some variety to my serves!
Yes, it’s definitely a great serve to keep your opponents on their toes so they can’t just commit to the low serve!
Nice one! Was caught out by one yesterday. I returned the surprise when the same server served the same drive serve successively. lol

Hi, what are the best return shots to play if I receive a high serve from my opponent falling in the rare court in Men's singles.
We will try and do a video about this in the future! A mixture of drops, smashes and clears are good to start with :D

It is from the UA-cam music library, called Hot Coffee! 😅
What's the difference between this drive serve and flick serve?
It’s a lot flatter!

How to return this serve
I thought Sukamuljo combines slice with finger squeezing to make the drive serve flat even after hitting from a reasonably low height.
It is useful in starting of match so that opponent feels annoying
Maybe! And makes them move their stance back a little
It's funny people are talking about all this as new, we've been doing this for ages
Flat trajectory serve is it legal
Yes! Check out our service rules video on our channel 😀
No. Jenny had a ranking as high as #50 in the BWF rankings and she has no idea of the BWF Rules. Extraordinary, don't you think?
Why were kevins opponents so upset in the clips you showed? Did they think it was illegal?
So the difference between this serve and the flick is basically the trajectory, then?
Yep!
i do the serve in the 80s
how in the hell is he allowed to do the shot at 1:17?
Because he's Kevin 😆😂
