One interesting side outcome from Magnus’ standing down from participating in Classical World Championship matches is that he alone, amongst the top players in the world, does not need to hold back in showing different approaches and improvements in opening play for fear of showing his preparation before the big match

Thanks for highlighting this interesting game. Carlsen’s play in this game reminds me of Fischer, straightforward plans with strong simple moves with devastating effect.

In the rest of the speed chess championship it had been a powerful weapon for Alireza, it was almost like Magnus took that weapon from him and began beating him with it. great analysis. i am subscribed and reccomend your channel to everyone i play with. Thanks Daniel.

Matthew Saddler did a video on this line in the king's indian a few years ago and showed that it was actually Stockfish's top line at extremely high depth!

It is so remarkable how many of the games from Paris, especially the earlier ones from the final that Magnus won , despite the situation and time constraints , stand up to detailed ,retrospective, analysis. Your commentary Danny on this game and that too of game 5 were really great- calling out game 5 for analysis was an especially great shout. Watching it live as a v bad player I could sense that something quite remarkable had just happened, but it took your video recap to give me some insights as to just what and how. The bottom line is that Magnus always seems to know where he is going and does so with uncanny economy and persistence, akin to some sort of high-order, muscular flow state, while most of his opponents, but not all, struggle to resist the tide and his analytical, incremental remorselessness. Thanks for the consistently high quality commentary and side-bar “what ifs?”All the best Tim

According to my database, 7... h6 is the 10th most popular choice! I see that Aronian played it against Carlsen in the FTX Crypto Cup in Miami in 2022. In that game, Carlsen played 8. d5 immediately instead of Re1. The game went 8 ... Nbd7; 9. Be3 Nh7; 10. Qd2 f5; 11. exf5 gxf5; and white snagged the pawn on h6. However, black got counterplay and won Carlsen's Q for R N and P. A topsy turvey game ended in a draw.

The King's Indian is a very interesting opening. I used to play it, but gave it up long ago. I used to follow the theory in it and it's amusing how many times it has been declared dead by grandmasters and then later someone resurrects it only for it to die eventually again. It's like a zombie that keeps coming back to life.
The only grudge I hold against it, is I think it's too difficult to play and I often see beginners playing it and I think that's unfortunate. I don't think it's worth the effort. I think different openings have different degrees of difficulty. I put the KID as one of the more difficult commonly played openings. I might even score it as a 11 out of 10, for non masters to play. I certainly found it insanely difficult to play. I switched to the Nimzo and Queen's Indian. And not that the Nimzo is easy or anything, but compared to the KID I think it is.
Very interesting game, however. Just seems to be another Carlsen classic, his strategic understanding derailing his opponents opportunities. He gets an advantage and like a boa constrictor he squeezes you to death. It almost looks obvious in hindsight when someone like GM King presents it for examination. Thanks for sharing!

The King's Indian is a contentious opening. It is so dynamic that I think it can be worth a go, but when it goes wrong it looks really really bad! And that's not good for the PR campaign.

I mean who would have thought that h6 move will bite Firouzja in long term, that was indeed very well played game by Magnus, ofcourse Firouzja is younger still but when I directly compare 21 year old Magnus and 21 year old Firouzja, I find Magnus possesses even deeper and mature understanding of long term strategy and higher level of consistency and stability in his play even at that time!!

Snapping off the Knight on f4 is such an instructive idea, and a little counterintuitive. I wonder if it's as effective if Black hasn't played h6. Might it be clearly antipositional?

The KID has not been refuted. Let's just say that at high levels, you need to go in with your eyes open. It's a tricky opening. At club level - carry on and have fun!

@5:26 after g3, what happens if black plays e4, with discovered attack on Nc3 and pawn attack on Nf3 at the same time? Doesn't that win a piece? Or does Nd4 stop everything and white has a great position with Ne6 coming next, forcing black to sac the rook?
Ie g3 e4, Nd4 Nhf6(since it's being attacked by Queen), Ne6 Rxe6(?). Is that really so bad for black? Does white even want to win wn exchange? The knight on d4 seems strong and can possibly go to c6 in the future, so it stops black from ever playing b6/b5 too. It cramps blacks position greatly.
I guess I answered my own question why black should not play e4. Haha.

If black would have played f5 (after white's b4), he 'd loose a pawn right away: e4xf5, g6xf5 followed by Nf3xe5 and when black recaptures, white's Queen takes black's Night on h5. Does anybody see compensation for the pawn?

Is Firouzja name pronounced the way Daniel says it with a hard J? Like firouZ - JA? I thought it was like some silent Z, like firou - ja? Like silent z and soft j.. I've never heard anyone else pronounce it the way Daniel does makes me wonder which pronunciation is correct.
Any Iranians in here or anyone else know for sure what is the correct pronunciation?
