I’m a quilter as well and love my mercerized threads! Great performer, less linty, and my sewing machine seems to make prettier stitches with it. Thanks for your research and sharing about the mercerization process! Really enjoyed it!
love the mercerized yarn....its so soft and nice to use..using a super mercerirzed now for a table cloth..started today..used it for earrings as well..1.1mm hook..its gonna take a while...lol take care
Hi Tamara. Excellent job making this video. From the process of mercerization to the tips and recommendations, I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot. So far I've only worked with the Sinfonia mercerized cotton and have only got through about half of the skein but it could very well be my all time favorite yarn. I frogged a lot many times in the beginning and it doesn't look any different than the yarn I haven't used yet. I'm highly impressed so far. Thank you for all the information and tips. Moogly was the first newsletter I subscribed to years ago and I've never been disappointed! Big yarny hugs from East Tennessee!
this was GREAT info to cover! I've not fully understood the term/ process and hadn't looked it up yet -- very well explained -- ty from a former Iowa farmgurl!!
Thank you! I purchased three cones of mercerized cotton from Goodwill. No clue what to do with it. Now I know. Going to make the double crochet shrug you displayed. ❤
I am finding it so difficult to work with. I like using size 10 crochet thread. I have a natural cotton thread that is soft and easy to work with. I find the mercerized thread is so stiff and difficult.... am I missing something?
I just bought a whole bunch of 100% mercerized cotton classic 10 Aunt Lydia's crochet thread by mistake. Didn't realize I was ordering thread. I have 6 balls in the color of Mexicana Variegated. Any ideas what I can do with this? I mostly make afghans.
Tamara, does cotton yarn (both regular & mercerized) need to be washed prior to crocheting? I sew & always launder cotton fabrics prior to cutting out, so I am curious. Thanks for all of the helpful information you provide us and great patterns too! 💜
OceanGirl 505 I quilted for years, and about 3-5 years in, stopped orewashing fabrics, the newer quilt shop quality fabrics really didn’t need to be prewashed.
@@mooglyblog - Thanks, Tamara, BTW, you are my Crochet Idol! I have learned so much from you. I started crocheting again 2 years ago after a 4 decade long hibernation. Interesting, good to know. Read about the process of making milk yarn, scary, scarce, sounds friendlier than it is. Allergy season, Tamara, scratchy eyes and throats, drink lots of coffee. ☕️

Wonderful tutorial. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing video!! I just bought two skeins of mercerized yarn and wasnt sure what it meant.

No, it's just stiffer! :)
Great video! Thanks for the all the info.
So interesting! Thank you for doing and sharing the research!
Thank you so much foe the wonderfully done lesson
Sodium Hydroxide is what is used to chemically straighten hair! The process you discussed for yarn is basically the same process for hair!
Oh how interesting! I had no idea, thank you for that!!

Well, you could do a baby afghan, perhaps something with filet crochet! :) Or try your first garment if you're feeling like expanding your skills. :)
It makes pretty earrings and doilies!
Interesting information... Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 🌸
Thanks for all the great info!
Great information
I love this so much!!

Great question! Thankfully, no - you can crochet or knit right from the skein. Washing and blocking can change the lay of the finished item though!

color bleeding? Which cotton will have this issue the mercerized or not?
Great question! I've never had a mercerized bleed on me, but I didn't come across anything about it in my research to say it can't happen!

Yes, sorry for the coughing - the trees are trying to kill me this week!

Any cellulose yarn can be mercerized from what I understand - so cotton, hemp, and linen! Thank you!
Can we assume that cotton isn't mercerized unless it's on the label?
Yes! If it's mercerized, it will be labeled as such!
Really interesting... Thsnk you..
Hi from another Iowan. I'm in Des Monies. Are you close?
I'm in the QC! :) Hello, stay safe over there! ♥
@@mooglyblog I will stay safe. Hope you aren't going through the protests and riots like we are. We had a 9pm curfew last night. Insanity reigns.
@@susanwhalen1034 Unfortunately the QC had a bad night last night and Scott County is now under curfew indefinitely as well. ♥
