Excellent! I lived here for the first 30 years of my life, starting in 1947. Amazing the council vandalism over the years in Huddersfield. Transforming a wonderful town into the most hideous town in Yorkshire. A lot of the horrid stuff built in the 1960s has already been demolished.
What you see in theses photos, was a thriving prosperous Huddersfield, with superb architectural buildings & local businesses, now all destroyed by successive incompetent, councils, this is my town, having lived & worked in Huddersfield for the last 56 years, was in the town centre last Saturday & there is nothing left except cheap ££ shops, tat shops & the latest phenomenon Vape shops, it's a crying shame, even Brighouse has more going for it over Huddersfield Town center 😕😕
And apart from the old bus 'station' - which was just a collection of drafty, exposed shelters, I can't really see any improvement. The fate of the piazza development - soon to be demolished - and the market just shows how these planners got it wrong.
@@frankyw8803 Your memory is playing ticks on you: my mother worked for a while, on one of the stalls selling material and clothing. In the summer, it was unbearably hot - so much so that the centre's owners installed fans, which helped a bit, but not much. Her employer was far from pleased with the new environment because in summer, people stayed out, and she was not the only one.
When they knocked pub down they thought they could get new structure fully erected in matter of weeks. If they could they were hoping council would let them keep it. BIG MISTAKE. HAD STEEL FABRICATED ABROAD CHEAPLY. DID NOT CONVERT MEASUREMENTS FROM METRIC TO IMPERIAL CORRECTLY. LOT OF REFABRICATION WAS THEN REQUIRED
clown world has not only decemated its self but my home town of dewsbury as well.that little thing aside brilliant vid ,much better with more place names attached ❤❤❤
The pub at castle hill wasn't demolished because of the council, it was because the owners had building work done and didnt stick to what they was allowed to do so they got told to make it right but couldn't afford it so it got ripped down.
These were for the electricity power station which was next to the gasworks down St Andrew's Road. Coal fired, some of the coal came by the Ramsden broad canal. Coal was unloaded at Aspley Canal basin. There's a picture of the coal bunkers there. I used to watch as a child.
The stone was sold to a building contractor from the south of England by the then owner whose planing permission to turn it into an takeaway was rejected by the city Council. In response to this he sold the ston, he was ordered by the council to rebuild the castle hill pub using the original stones wear posable. Put because of his religion he refused to do so hens Huddersfield lost a marvellous public house.
I thought the planners in Huddersfield were bad today but it would seem they’ve always been absolutely shite - fancy binning off that market hall. Not to mention the piece hall and the midland bank
What a wonderful collection of early views of Huddersfield. I remember them all well. Thanks
One thing stands out. How clean and tidy Huddersfield was. The Parks full of flowering tulips and smart, unlike to day. What we have lost.
KIRKLEES 😢
Really enjoyed this lots of lost memories on here, thanks 👍🏻😎

Scandalous that the clowns can get away with it 🤡

True very true Dewsbury was my home town 😔
Yes, much better with the locations identified.
Clown sills ?
To be fair the old market hall looked like Dracula's Castle...they could have least sandblasted it.

Tell me, what were the big cooling towers for?

Does anyone know when the cooling towers were demolished?
The power station shut in 1981 and the towers were demolished in 1983. 👍🏻
Some very famous people come from Huddersfield no 1 most favourite person the chuckle brothers 😆😇
THEY ARE FROM ROTHERHAM
