One of the last true monarchs. If I had a Delorean, I would go back 110 years to try to smooth things over between the Empires. Europe was murdered in the Great War.

@@austerlitzyorktown2928 he didn't run away, he was forced to abdicate the throne by the Entente. And he was not the only leader in the war that sent millions to their deaths, what about all the other countries? If anything, you should be blaming Austria-Hungary instead since they started the war, Germany was an ally and was only helping Austria.

In the pictures of his exile in the Netherlands he almost looks like Don Quixote with that beard.
Wilhelm gets a bad rap, like usually happen with those who are on the losing side of History, but let's be fair. He gets compared unfavourably to his father Frederick III, to other monarchs and heads of state contemporary to him and above all to Bismarck, but one would love to know what either of those would have done if they were in his shoes. Even the cunning and cautious Bismarck wasn't above reproach. He made blunders of his own too, like for instance the Kulturkampf, goaded by the liberals and driven by his anti-catholic and anti-polish bogotry, or the bloody way he intended to deal with social-democrats in 1890. Even his role as honest-broker in the Conference of Berlin backfired. So in some respects Wilhelm was wisest that the much praised Bismarck. Wilhelm was, I think, more open-minded that the iron chancellor. Germany enjoyed 26 years of peace under the reign of Wilhelm, with stability and a visible improvement of the life for the mass of the population. Despite that, the Kaiser was the target of a campaign of slander and ridicule both abroad and in Germany, in the press and in the Reichstag, all of which he suffered stoically. In the long run it damaged his self- confidence. And yet he's routinely caricaturized as a medieval despot. The attempts of a rapprochment with France, Britain and Russia were unsuccessful, but how could had been otherwise, when the three of them were pursuing a policy of encirclement against Germany? The single-minded determination with which Germany fought during four years is a testament to the unity of the people around the Kaiser. When the German government saw the war lost it requested an armistice, but Wilson rebuffed those overtures with delaying tactics. They didn't want Germany defeated, they wanted the fall of the Kaiser. This provoked the uprising of november and drove the country into anarchy and revolution, which should had been avoided. The fall of the monarchy benefited no one, except the communists and national-socialists. Political assassinations, street battles, armed uprisings, all these things became commonplace after 1918. It wasn't so under Wilhelm II reign

Not the case; diplomatic relations with the UK were improving until the July crisis. It was the Kaiser's decision to not renew a non-aggression treaty with Russia and the Entente was defensive in posture. Indeed, the UK was not treaty bound to defend France, only Belgium. Without an invasion of Belgium and France by Germany, the UK would have remained aloof from European politics as it intends to do post-2019 and Germany would have continued its economic growth without the burden of a large empire. In fact, the parallels are uncanny as the UK is just as pre-occupied with the Irish question now as it was with the Home Rule Bill in 1914 and Germany is the largest economy in the EU.

I like the tradition and honor the nobility brings. Some of the best figures in world history have been monarchs. I also don't like how decisions are made by the popularity of the decision not by how good the decision is. There have been examples were great ideas have not been implemented because they were unpopular. Also, democracy does not necessarily equal freedom Wilhelm's Germany was a very free country.

It was an Englishman who took over his education; this person was cruel and sadistic and caused a great deal of harm to Wilhelm as a young boy. Why he had an obsession with his english cousins, I will never understand. His oldest cousin, son of Queen Victoria arranged the Entente and the encirclement of Germany, leading to WW1. The whole story is sickening, because while that dastardly bastard was plotting against Germany, the mother of the Russian Tsar, Tsarina Dagmar (of Danmark) was plotting against Germany as well.We know the results-

You're preaching history when you think that Kaiser Wilhelm was the first cousin of a man who ruled England in the 1300s? You clearly have no grasp of history. Wilhelm was not the cousin of any King Edward but rather of King George. King Edward VII was not King during WWI (he died in 1910) and actually Wilhelm and his grandmother Victoria were very close and Wilhelm had a great admiration for the UK. Until WWI the British royal family had many German titles and vice versa.

The older Kaiser Wilhelm II would have made a far better Kaiser than the younger Kaiser Wilhelm II. In his youth, he was self-serving, arrogant, an egotist and a jingoist with an inflated world-view of himself and the German state. The older Wilhelm from his journal entries was a clairvoyant, humble and experienced. If that Kaiser Wilhelm II had ruled the German nation, the outlook of Europe would be different today, with Germany being the largest European nation and still a great military power.

Respect to both the Baltic and German Prussia. Either one would be better than the Russians there right now...

How do you do this? It looks like real coloured pictures or like parts of films.

An amazing compilation of photos of the once great monarch.
Can I ask what the piece throughout the video is?
