He he! Thanks Mike, it happens sometimes! Not completely finished yet, I have ordered a replacement for the resistor I had to bodge, but will have to wait for that. Maybe I will reassemble the tape recorder for now to get it off the bench, and I'll have to get the chassis out to fit the resistor once I've got it. I might have other issues, too, when I try it out to see if it will record, erase etc.
Next time I'm annoyed by a motorboat I'll chuck a capacitor at it. 🛥💥🤣 Nice job. I'd love to find out where the amp is finding that mains hum from though. As it changes with volume then, assuming all the existing shielded cable (if any?) is correctly earthed, I wonder if using a little shielded guitar pickup cable (if you have some) to feed the audio signal from point to point is worth a try?
Well, it was all wired up on the bench to test, so I don't yet know if the hum is significant when it's properly assembled. Thanks for the suggestion, the guitar cable might be just the thing. Earthing issues can also be involved. The cable from the head is twin with shield. Although the motor is much quieter than it was, it does run all the time the machine is on, which will mask a quiet hum anyway, like turning up a car radio to hide the expensive sounding noises from the engine! To be fair, the volume is very good, and I don't notice the hum when a tape is playing.
Well done Tim, you did do it 😁

Nice detective work, Tim!
Also, I prefer my tone control to be subtle.
Thanks Joe. Yes the tone does work OK, I find it sounds better if I reduce the treble just a tad, but the sound is crisp and clear.
