Great information for potential buyers, and you had me laughing when you said now it's falling on its face after it just takes off annoyingly slow 😂
I agree with the throttle response feeling sluggish. I bought a pedal box to fix that issue. You can change the sensitivity of the throttle.
I'm really glad for my 6-speed manual in my MK7 Golf R (with APR Stage 2). Zero lag, total power band control, engine braking with staying in lower gears, and an upgraded clutch. It's true that a similarly-tuned DSG will beat a manual in a race, but I'm into spirited driving, not racing.
The high-torque APR Stage 2 tune is bonkers!
Awesome. It's still no match for the mk8R
With the heated seats try touching the temp adjustment slider with 2 fingers at the same time. Life saver for my mk8 gti
What do you mean?
@@JVette01 it will turn the heated seats on go through the levels without having to go into the screen
I will have to try that
I haven't noticed the shit carpet in my 24 RS3, but overall i love the interior styling and quality of the interior! The physical buttons and infotainment is great as well imo!!
A TCU tune should improve those shift points.
that's what im hoping for... they just need to crack the tcu already haha
Or a pedal box 👍🏻
I have a mk7.5 R and a m240i and the B58 engine and transmission slows down nicely when downshifting. Makes you feel like you can control speed beautifully… but the golf R doesn’t which is a bit frustrating. The B58 is turbocharged…. So it’s likely a Golf R thing. Wish they’d change that.
Yeah I think it’s a transmission and engine thing. The trans in the zf8 helps you slow down
5:15 - I definitely felt that 😤
You can feel it through the screen obviously 🤷♂️
RPM Performance has a awesome aftermarket exhaust for the Golf R. You won't regret swapping it in for the OEM exhaust. The reality is though, with emission regulations pretty much all four cylinders sound trash.
I’ll have to look into that. May not be for the US market though
I think all new cars are tuned for economy so they shift early. I think no engine braking these days is again an economy aspect of new cars. As for the DCT, people have found them “clunky” in takeoff and in shifting. BMW had a dual clutch transmission in most of the M cars but now have gone back to a torque converter automatic which shifts almost as fast as a dual clutch but is so much smoother. While I loved the DCT on my Golf R 7.5 and my E92 M3, I really love the 8-speed auto on my 2024 M2. BMW claims shift speeds of 150 milliseconds whereas the DCT shifts were around 120 milliseconds. As far as the infotainment screen and the haptic steering wheel buttons, VW Golf R for 2025, will have regular steering wheel buttons ala Golf R 7.5 and a revised screen that doesn’t lag when cold. Lastly, brake dust…people used to complain about low dust pads squealing when cold so most auto manufacturers now run very soft pads that don’t squeal but make the wheels filthy after driving even a short distance. Race pads get rid of the dust but will squeal and will do a job on your rotors.
Great video btw! Thanks.
As much as I loved the mk8 r much more than my old mk7 gti, I felt like the transmission in the mk7 gti behaved so much better, it had zero clunk on manual mode and shifted perfectly with normal mode and never felt like it would break when shifting to P or something.
But, I’m glad they improved the behavior during hot weather because the mk7 used to hold gears up until 4k RPMs no matter what on normal mode when it’s over 30c/90f outside, that thankfully never happens with the mk8
Also 1 more gripe, IDK if it’s just my car, but individual mode sometimes resets DCC randomly, which is annoying because I have it set to softest and I have to check the individual settings every time to make sure it didn’t decide to randomly reset the DCC to the middle setting which does make the dampers kinda stiff for daily use with all the rough roads we have.
I think that’s only happened once. Might have been a glitch or something but yeah I have my DCC on the softest setting as well!
I had the 20AE like yours and sometimes I did hear a noticeable clunk noise when turning off the engine or parking. I thought it was the drivetrain or transmission. It had me nervous.
It only happens when I put it in park after being in manual mode.
I have a 24 and lots of the same thoughts, but I can complain even more!:
The transmission is pretty good, but does have some hiccups at low speeds, especially in medium traffic when accelerating/slowing/accelerating/slowing, it can get confused and a little clunky. I think that's mostly just the nature of DSG.
No remote start is the worst! I'm in Phoenix! The reason is that in Germany, where the car is built, it's illegal to have your car idling without anyone in the car. VWs made in other parts of the world can have the option. Huge bummer and easily fixed by VW to make it available in non-German markets.
Auto start/stop sucks, and it keeps turning back on if you don't mess with the computer.
Allowing me to have a custom mode, but still starting in default mode sucks, just remember my last settings!
Having a warranty means I don't want to tune it even though I want to tune it!
No tuning options for the transmission makes me sad.
My wheels are ugly.
19" wheels instead of 18" wheels, stepping down in size is a huge upgrade. But I'll go aftermarket once these tires are worn and get snow tires for the stock wheels.
Loud road noise. I get it, weight savings, but man it's loud.
Stereo kinda sucks, mostly due to the loud road noise, so you have to crank it or not hear 2/3rds of the music.
Apparently the car has REALLY sophisticated high beams, but since the US lawmakers are 40 years behind headlight technology, we have to pay a grand or so to unlock it (illegally).
Sounds like a sewing machine even with the exhaust open.
Soundaktor. Just no.
Having to drive half way across the country to get one for MSRP because the dealer network wants to squeeze out every dime they can. Local dealer wanted 62k for one, not a typo!
Just something missing, some drama or something that I can't put a finger on to 'spark joy'. It's not a boring car by any means, but it's so good at everything, but not incredible at anything, that it's not that exciting either. I guess to say, it doesn't feel as special as it is in some ways.
I just realized it sounds like I don't like the car. I really do like it, it's great at so many things, it's practical and a track weapon all together. Maybe if I can find an autocross nearby I'll fall in love. However, I'm deeply in 'like' with the car (non-tuned nonetheless). The list of good things would be 10 times longer than the list of dislikes, so I'm not hatin'!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. All of those are very valid points. Most of which I agree with.
Bro I have the same infotainment system in my 22 GTI, and I have NO IDEA why all those center buttons (temp and volume under the touch screen) don’t light up at night. Makes it impossible to do anything at night. Blows my mind.
My GTI did the same thing too it’s kind of lethargic in normal mode..but other than that i love GTI and GOLF R its quick and there’s a big potential to make it faster.. 💪😂
Maybe if your trans can be tuned, we will see if that helps! ;)
I hear you on normal drive my gti will want to shift at like 1800rpm
Yeah way too low haha. Even in normal mode it should rev out a little higher depending on throttle input
Yeah, that's normal. But it's awful if you're in traffic.
My 40AE Gti did the exact same
Clunk, this was my first DSG so I was worried for the long term🤔
It’s normal with this trans. The GTI did it too. I’m hoping a TCU tune will fix it or make it better at some point
@@JVette01My 2016 A3 has no clunk, but at times doesn't go into first when I take my foot off the brake pedal too fast. It does it more often when it's cold. My Dsg tune didn't help with that or longer shift time while driving normal. These cars are not ment for slow traffic driving. I usually put it manual mode in bumper to bumper. Plus I'm sure the DSGs are different.
Oh, I thought of one more thing. If you have an OBDeleven you can do a DSG relearn or adaptation. That may help. It resets your DSG. Give it a try.
I might have to look into that. Thanks for sharing your experience
@@JVette01 np, I’ll keep watching to see if anything comes of yours. Rn I’m deciding whether my next car will be a Rex or an EN , or that I should just stick to the Gti 🤔
GTI for sure. Makes full power on 87 octane, better mpg, and more refined than the other options.
I literally drive my GTI in sport and manual mode all the time. Auto always tries to lug the engine and I don’t like it.
That’s part of the reason I use manual mode often.. but it has that annoying 2-3 clunk
@@JVette01 it’s weird but normal. Get it all the time!
Having an actual manual fixes 4 of 5 of these.
I love a good manual, but the DSG is the way to go in the R and GTI imo. The manual has rev-hang, a weak and numb feeling oem clutch. Gears are too long, too.
True, but these are minor little clunks and most dual clutch transmissions aren’t silky smooth like, say, a zf8. Not deal breakers but it would be nice if was silky smooth
The manual is way too slow.
@@layne4376 I love my manual, is in fact not slow.
@@ms3ben I love the DSG, I will never argue which is better/faster, but the manual is more fun and eliminates a lot of these issues
Doesn't pop bang and burbles like elantra n 🥹
It does actually pop and bang. The exhaust itself just isn’t very loud
No remote start????
No
They really don't come with remote start? Is it an option at least?
Nope
It should illegal to drive dirty cars
I agree. The weather has been awful so I figured no point until the weather wants to cooperate
Curious, you think running a tune on your car without a TCU tune might be an issue? I have a 20AEr stock never felt the trans react like yours.
No, 034 said the low torque tune is not an issue with stock tcu. What were you referring to in regards how my trans reacts?
@borlax3552 me too. I have no idea what he’s talking about.
@@JVette01yeah. I have the same car and don’t have the same trans reactions. No tune yet. On my mark 7 I noticed more hard shifting (even on low torque file). Maybe just driving harder.
I mean we all saw your car throw a message. i know these companies say its safe but in all honesty these guys are trying to make money.
Long ago vw golf always my fav car.. but now i am dissapoint too
still a great car.
@@JVette01 interior and exterior i cant acept that... front exterior copy honda fd
Exactly why im either in Nurburgring or Drift mode 90% of the time. 4:47
You missed a ton... Lack of cooled glove box (compared to my mk 7.5 R Line), cheap pedal rest for dead foot...utter FAFF to get the mirror to drop in reverse... brightness ratio of screen themes impossible to adjust on preset....speaker delete on rear passenger doors (c/w R-Line even !).... plastic door threshold trims.... (Euro R20 with the uprated engine). Transmission = Fine.
Not sure if you’re in the US but thanks for sharing your thoughts
engine braking -- its trans. braking - and golf r being a duel clutch setup - less ficten - so less slow down - - the first thing - use the speical mode - S+ or M+ - better pedal feel - faster responce - the third thing - also a duel clutch issue - u always have to let it get to temp. tune or no tune - still the same - (I also hate this) - and your last thing - what i hate is on the slide - no lights - also the sensor issues / sos thing - aka wsterring wheel issue - that make the car beep ever few secs lol - (this is what i hate the most) fix is - touch bottom of the wheel - but i use bottom corner to drive - so yea this car has iits things but there are fixes for them - oh the speical drive mode S+ / M+ is the one that sets 500rpm higher - it to set the turbo up - for faster spool - also car temps will be reading alittle higher in that mode - also
Thanks for sharing
I walked into VW 2 weeks ago looking for a new manual GTI SE (380). However I fell in love with the car in the showroom. It was a black SE with the leather package and the salesman told me the car had remote start because it was an auto (DSG). My brother has a Tiguan with it so I didn’t question it at all. I ended up buying the car for sticker the next day…it was the last day of the month so we didn’t get out of there until almost 10pm. We didn’t have time to go over all the features together before I went home. He told me the I’d be able to figure it out through the app and to call if I didn’t. Well…now I know that the car doesn’t have the auto start feature. He owned the mistake and told me they’d “make it right”. He called me yesterday to tell me that the technicians are trying to figure it out but they can’t seem to find a system that works with my car. Do you know of any that would work in a 2024 GTI SE?? I really need it where I live.
Not sure. Might just have to do without
@@JVette01 So annoying…it’s really something I wanted! If they can’t do it I’m going to get some money back from them. He literally used it as leverage to make the sale along with his sales manager. How can they not know the features in and out? Seems crazy to me. Anyway…love your videos man!
Overall I enjoy my 20th 2023 R. My infotainment screen just died though so that's pretty shitty. 12k miles. Taking it in tomorrow. Quite unfortunate.
That’s too bad. I never had any issues with it breaking. I do have a CEL now though that will need addressed
@@JVette01 Gotta pay the german engineering tax amirite? Still a fun car tho. (manual here). Hope the CEL isn't anything too serious. Cheers.
Im not a fan of throttle boosters, but the Golf R may benefit from one.
I think the lack of engine braking may be due to the nature of the DCT. My DCT GT500 reacts similarly.
How is the Golf R steering response (steering ratio quickness) compared to the mk8 GTI?
Hmm possibly. For steering, the golf r is a slightly tighter ratio but doesn’t turn as sharp as the GTI due to the bigger wheels I’m assuming.
I have one in my A3 and it helps only to open up the throttle faster. So it's really not good for launches. Better for rolls. It reacts faster, so you have to find the right setting for you. I usually leave mine on normal until I do some spirited driving or roll racing.
That clunk is definitly not normal!
Both of my DSG cars did that
I would LOVE to have a golf R. I’m already hype af with a gti so guess my bar is low.
They’re both great cars! Just the throttle thing drives me crazy and few other things they could’ve done better
@@JVette01 yea I notice that sometimes too. This was a good video for sure though. I’m on the exact same page with the infotainment. Some things are unnecessarily longer than they should be but it’s manageable and I actually really like the steering wheel. It looks nicer than buttons to me and I’ve never misclicked anything.
Sometimes i wonder why you purchased this car. I think this is video #2 of your dislikes of the car lol
It’s not #2. You may be confusing it with my GTI dislikes video. The ownership review video had a thumbnail that raised a question but wasn’t anything actually negative.
So, it’s obvious you are watching another channel and mixing up the content. He accurately critiques from multiple perspectives. This is probably the best channel to watch if you are unsure about purchasing a Golf GTI or Golf R.
