- In this video we'll look at how to use studio monitors or speakers with the ZOOM H6. This can be useful for many things, but specifically for when you are using the ZOOM H6 as an audio interface and you want to monitor your DAW with your studio monitors.
We will be using Pro Tools, but any DAW will be the same when the ZOOM H6 is being used as an audio interface.
You will need a stereo breakout cable, 1/8" (3.5mm) to two 1/4" (in many cases) There are other styles of breakout cables depending on what your monitors need.
The cable in the video 1/8" to two 1/4"

Nice Video!
We just purchased the H6 for remote podcasting. It's nice to know that it can be used as an audio interface in Pro Tools!
Great Vid, I'm searching of a way of recording a live podcast whilst simultaneously playing it through speakers for the audience to listen to. There isn't a professional amp or audio set up at the venue so I'm trying to use my h6 as a recording device but also line out to the speakers. I've just started looking so I may stumble upon something shortly, hopefully lol.
Thanks!
This is a very useful video. Thanks for sharing and happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you for the information! I am using my zoom H6, not as an interface, but pluging in directly to computer speakers. I am having an issue where I can not shut of the monitoring while recording. Meaning that while recording, the mics on the zoom are live. This creates feedback when I am trying to record. Any way to shut the monitoring off while you record? Thank you!
Quick question. Do the two outputs (headphones and line) appear as output options from within the DAW, so that you can use a DAW's monitor feature for headphones (i.e metronome) and use the line send to studio monitors?
Good point, would be nice to hear direct so no colouring from any other pre-amp.
Cheers, Pete
Cool how is this recorder
How is the sound
sir can we use my home speakers with it so that what i speak on mic will come out diretcly from my speaker ??
Hey tanks a lot .. I don't need batteries when hooked via USB-Pc?
Hello, very good video. 1 question, can i line the sound out to a camera-phone(trs preamp) just using trs(zoom) to xlr (preamp) and use the sound features from the (h8 in my case) on video recordings?
Hi! Can we use both headphone out as well as line out simultaneously in multitrack interface mode?
Hi, Thanks for your decent video. Does Zoom h6 support more than 100ohm monitoring headphones loud enough for monitoring purpose?
hello, thank you for the video. I have a question. I have a XBOOM box speaker, can i connect zoom h6 directly with it, for better sound output? and does zoom h6 works like a mixer?
Have you had any problems with latency during the playback and/or a recording ? Thanks
hi idk if you can help with this but, my ZOOM H6 record have no playback volume from the speaker and even the headphone input after I record. there is frequency when I speak into the mic but there is no sound from headphones
So does the H6 only output via unbalanced headphone ports? No way to configure the XLR/TRS inputs to be used as a balanced output? Thx =)
Actually I am glad h6 wasn't in stock and I made pre order and instead of making me wait forever they gave me refund so now I bought h8.
Hi loved your video..I have a question though...got zoom h6 and want to connect it to my studio monitor speaker...I've read that we should use TRS connectors, but seems not to be TRS...?
I have exactly the same problem! It seems these breakout cables only have ts quarter inch jacks on them when they are splitting a stereo signal from a mini jack. My monitors have balanced quarter inch, i.e, balanced inputs so ideally need trs jacks. However, I have read that you can us just ts jacks into balanced speaker inputs - you just won't get a balanced signal. That is the price you pay when using a Zoom (H4N Pro in my case) recorder as an audio interface.
Hi! Thanks for the tip. What about if my monitor loudspeakers have only XLR input (with no internal TRS)?
Something like this might work www.amazon.com/Hosa-HMX-006Y-XLR3M-Stereo-Breakout/dp/B00YSAVW28
BenoniStudio what do you think about audio interface and monitor performance?
Hello. First of all thanks for the video. Very good quality. Can you help me with something?
I am currently using the Apogee Jam 96k using my guitar on the input and Amplitube to make the effects. I'm using the iPad. The Apogee Jam 96k has only one input, a gain wheel and a USB cable that connects to the Lightning port on the iPad.
For the output, I am using the iPad headphone jack to plug on my monitors with a similar cable that you showed in the video.
Everything is coming from the same power supply, and I hear a hum. That noise seems to come back to the iPad and it appears in my recordings. It looks that it comes back to the instrument or so. I have already tried everything, the ground is Ok and everything comes from the same power strip.
I think my problem is because I am outputting some with a high impedance (headphones out) to a monitor. And since the Jam 96k doesn't have any audio out, I will need an interface that also has line outputs. The thing is that I don't want to buy an interface if I'm uncertain that this will solve the problem.
Does that make sense? I have already spent hundreds of dollars on stuff to get rid of that noise. When I put headphones on the iPad headphone out it's zero noise and pristine quality, same with these self-powered bose speakers (which I plugged just to test, they are too "boomy" to record).
Any suggestions to get rid of that noise? I can make a video and put on UA-cam if you or someone wants to follow up with me on this. It's very frustrative because the noise just don't go away.
Another thing. The cable that you use to output from the interface to the speakers. Does it need to be a balanced cable?
Many thanks and sorry for the big comment!
A balanced cable may help, but not necessarily required. The noise could be caused by not having enough power for everything. Is the iPad plugged in while you have all of these accessories connected?
BenoniStudio hi, what do you think about audio interface and monitor performance?
Hello here I just interested possible play music on one fon where I have music files straight to zoom h 6 and come out other fon where is live stream I interested possible to zoom h6 Th U
Can you do this to plug your h6 into xlr studio monitors to just use as normal speakers? or is it only for audio production applications like protools? I'm a video editor and just got studio monitors to up my audio game so this would be great since my computer screen doesn't have speakers in it. Thanks!
That should work. You would have to set the Zoom as your audio interface for your OS.
@@BenoniStudio So I set it up and it does work. I tried to get an XLR breakout cable but it doesn't seem to work, but RCA works great. I guess I'm losing some audio quality in that I'm using RCA output?
@@brianzhou6454 Hi Brian, I know we are 3 years on from your question but RCA inputs are just fine - if they weren't they wouldn't be on so many audio interfaces and studio monitors as connection options! Good luck!
Hi sir, what do you think about audio interface and monitor performance
I think it works fine, but I prefer a standard interface just for ease of use. Something like a Komplete Audio 6 or a Scarlett are good choices for high quality interfaces that are not too expensive and work well.
Once the line out is plugged in, does it still play through the headphones?
Yes
can you use both the line out for the studio monitors + still use it with microphones at the same time?
also, I'm using a Zoom H5. Thank you so much by the way for making the video
Yes. You could use the Line out or the Headphone out for the speakers and still use mic inputs.
How do I use the H6 as an external microphone, plugging it into a mixer?
You'd have to use the headphone out or line out into the mixer.
Thanks for this, sir! Do you think this would also work on Zoom H4n?
Sure, use the Headphone/Line Out on the H4n
Thanks! Another thing, for example i use a midi controller plugged in to my laptop and i have my zoom as an interface with monitors on its headphone out, would i hear the sound of the midi live from the speakers?
Yes, assuming the MIDI is trigger a virtual instrument and the VI/DAW is routed with the Zoom as the audio interface.
Very nice cover btw. Great voice, keep it up. Everyone go check it out ua-cam.com/video/-i-N33MOUQU/v-deo.html
Thanks again! Glad you liked the cover :)
Is it possible to monitor the signal you get from your DAW at a low enough latency for guitar and bass to be played normally?
I know I can have direct monitoring but I want to hear the post-fx sound not the DI sound.
Should be able to. Lower the buffer in your DAW or the Zoom H6 driver control panel.
Have you have tried doing so? / Could you try doing so?
on the internet I can only find people that complain about the huge latency they get even at the lowest setting possible.
thank you very much for taking the time to answer.
I don't have a problem when setting the buffer at 512 or under. 256 or 128 feel really good. There is noticeable latency at 1024.
Thank you very much, you rock!
weird noise while monitoring
