Huge fan of the Stinson ATR 5 for trails. Then I got the Bondi 7 for the road and it was a big disappointment -- the toe box seems too narrow, got some blisters, and despite the massive cushion, I feel really banged up when I run in the Bondis.
Just bought Cliftons after years of running in budget Adidas shoes. Complete gamechanger. I love watching videos about running shoes now. It's a whole world I never knew existed
41 miles in so far & I love them! Very comfortable for longer run to a half marathon. My ASIC Metaracers are my go to shoes for shorter distances. The Carbon x2’s my first Hoka’s
Hi Ben, it would be great if you mentioned the specific mileage you put into a shoe when you give a verdict. You do sometimes, but often that is missing. Overall a good review though. Not really a Hoka fan, but always interested in new releases and the testing results.
RINCON, all day long! Did a 50k ultra with zero issues, no blistering and could actually walk the next day 👍 Clifton's can feel a bit clunky/ploddy, but good for easy runs. Have tried Hoka trails and couldn't get on with them. No give whatsoever in the mesh uppers and my feet feel as if they are being strangled. Happier in the Adidas Two Parley - dreamy!
I tried mine today, and I loved it. I watched many reviews of this shoe before buying it, and I was pretty confident it would work well for me. Your videos are awesome .. thanks a lot.
I'm a Hoka convert. Mainly used Asics then Brooks, but was suffering from calf injuries. Can honestly say that switching to Hoka has kept me running. Being tall and heavy, the width, support and cushioning has really helped. The Gaviota has been my workhorse road trainer and off road either Challenger or Speedgoat. Nice work Ben 👍😁
Loved my Rincon's initially - unfortunately they broke down too fast (couldn't use them for every run anymore after 350km). Still in love with the Carbon X1 - and got my HM PB in them! One of my favourite shoes I've ever run in.
Got a pair coming down next week as I've become used to the feeling of HOKA over the last 6 months - this will be my first carbon plated shoe so I'm quite excited! I've recently rotated in some NB 1080v10's with my HOKA Bondi 6 with the aim of the NB eventually replacing my Bondi so that they become my everyday shoe, and the carbon x2 my speed session / race day shoe! Thanks so much for the review video, honest and brilliant as always.
How is the durability? I do know that the cushion can last but the outsole is thin and has no rubber. Usually if the outsole worns off im fine but in this case it will expose the carbon plate so im quite curious how it will hold up

Was looking at these the other day. Thanks for the review. I got the vaporflys for half marathon race day in October but wanted a everyday carbon shoe so that’s definitely been added to the list 👍
I’ve had these for a while and not really used them! For anything below half marathon where I want to go fast I use ASICS Noosa Tri 13 which I find feels faster and normally all of my long runs are on trails so using the Speedgoat 4. But going to use the Carbon X2 at the Robin Hood half in Nottingham later this month and possibly the virtual London marathon :)
Love Hoka trainers, got the Carbon X 1 and look forward to version 2. Fav Hoka is the speed goat 4, second pair on the go and Rincons are a close second.
I am enjoying the speedgoat 4's now Mat. Had a really painful pressure and heat spot on the ball of the right foot at the start. Was going to take them back. Have you had any trouble breaking them in?
@@ThePaulaon1 had a bit of rubbing on the arch of my foot, but put that down to my flat feet. Plenty of off-road fun with them. persevere the ride is worth it.

I bought my first pair of Hokas a couple of weeks ago which I got for nearly half price I couldn’t believe how comfortable they were. I have just bought another pair I like them that much . I normally use Nike or adidas but I think Hoka might be my go too shoe from now on. Excellent shoe for all uses. Will probably get the Rocket next time for those sorter races.
I always feel that Hoka should suit me, but my first Hoka (Mach 2) was initially great at speed, especially with the rocker, and used successfully in a decent marathon. But recently gave me horrendous blisters on a training run after just 10 miles (no other shoe gives me blisters) - not sure if the mid-sole had gone (if so, just 250 miles), or its Hoka. Will try another Hoka at some stage, just to satisfy mu curiosity....!!
i love my Hoka shoes. Rincon is the best i have ever run in. Arahi 4 for the longrun. i would love to get the x2 for raceday because i do overpronati a bit and think it is the most sable race(carbon)shoe out ther. Or is ther a more Sable out ther. nice video as always.
Never had a pair but really thinking of using them alongside my Nike zoom tempo next % whilst training for a marathon! They do look awesome, thanks for the great review;) Or I was until I watched right to the end 😢
I ordered a pair of shoes direct from Hoka and it was canceled as you experienced. The frustration for me : the shoe was in my town scheduled for delivery! So very, very odd.
That is weird!! Mine was cancelled about 5 days after ordering them.. (as a preorder) but they were just about to dispatch them. Oh well. Luckily managed to still get some from sports shoes!
Ever try Altras Ben? I switched from Hokas to the Escalante 2 and never looked back - most comfortable all purpose running shoe I’ve ever had, pure butter at pace
Hi Ben, thank you so much for the review and that you also tried to compare with Rocket X. My the most favorite shoe now is Saucony Endorphin Speed, this is really great shoe for steady runs, longer runs, tempo runs and after even long tempos I do not feel my legs tired as in other shoes. I've got also Clifton 7 and it's good daily trainer for easy runs. I'm thinking if to buy and try Rocket X for intervals training. And also looking forward to Mach 4, another new 2021 HOKA shoe coming up soon. Seth already reviewed Mach 4 and he's very satisfied and surprised by it as seems to be that Mach 4 is much improved than previous version 3. For racing I've got Endorphin Pro. So looks I "fell in love" with Saucony Endorphin line :) Speed for training and Pro for racing :) Let's keep on "getting it done"!
@@AlexM-hm2wb that would be great. Would definitely try Speed 2 😀 although what to improve on that shoe? decrease weight? I've heard that maybe upgrade upper, though it's good, very breathable,. Thanks Ben. What about running in the rainy and moist london weather? Is the sole safe enough? I don't want to slip all the time! Because it doesn't happen with the Nike pegassus or Air Zoom tempo next. Thank you very much
I’ve been training in the mach 5s for my first marathon and I wondered what Hokas would be good for race day! Would you recommend this one Ben or the Rocket x/x2 OR the Bondi X? Thanks 🙏🏼
Yip the grip is something special. Was amazed during a trail run in the snow and ice on New Years day. Held up amazing and didn't fall once. It was like an ice rink at points as well.
I like the x2 i use them in my training rotation togheter with the saucony endorfine speed shoes they make a perfect match , i had the rincon but for longer distance i prefer the carbonX2 , next wil be the Mach4
Hows is the durability? I do know the cushion can last, but what about the outsole. In fine if a normal shoe outsole worn off but in this case if it worn off the carbon plate will be expose and thats the end of it.
Cheers for the review Ben. I have enjoyed the Hoka brand. However just picked up the Clifton 7's after retiring my Rincon 2's after 300 miles (I enjoyed the Rincon) and the 7's just feel blah, flat and uninspiring. Would the Tempo Next % be worth me adding them into the mix?
Why not go back and get another pair of Rincon's if they are working well for you? Just in a new colour you haven't had, then they feel properly new!! The Tempo's are quite different to the Rincon.. good if you're a mid foot striker, but would avoid if not.
@@BenParkes Yeah I suppose I could. Perhaps not having any kind of shoe rotation going on in the past I am now keen to start trying out different brands and shoes 🙂. I am now comfortably mid foot after years of being a heel striker so I think I will pick up the Next %. Birthday next month, so a good excuse. All the best m8.
bought hoka bondi in the spring, great recovery shoe. bought the Mach 4 for Tempo runs and works well with awesome lock down but a bit flat as I'm a heel to midfoot striker. My question is will the carbon 2 be just like the Mach 4 or better?
Hi Ben, if you have a shoe like this that is a bit disappointing or just not for you what do you do? Can you send Hoka’s back like you can with ASICS? I bought the Endorphin Shifts because the Speeds were so amazing but although they are top quality they feel heavy and leaden compared with my Novablasts. The Shifts we’re pretty expensive so I do use them and I say to myself that the extra weight is doing me good on those long easy runs but I’m kind of forcing myself to use them in my rotation. ASICS are so amazing to offer that 90 day return policy and it’s worked in that I’ve kept the Novablasts as they feel so good. I’d be interested to know how you’re going to use your Hokas if at all seeing as they don’t do it for you. Cheers, Ian
I’ll probably put them on eBay, so I can recoup some funds to buy another pair to review. Yes some manufacturers allow you to send shoes back if you don’t like them.. but I just wouldn’t want for the brand to think I was just exploiting that to basically get free shoes to review etc.. difficult one. So eBay is a good bet. With longer term shoes I just donate them to various charities if they’ve still got good life left in them!
Thanks for a refreshingly honest review 👍🏼 What’s your favourite 10k+ training shoes? Comfortable yet responsive. I’ve never owned any of these "monster-heels shoes" and wondering if their made for heel strikers.. BTW: Tried the Mach 4 ?
I have been running 70km on those now and they give me blisters where I never used to get them, even in the big toe! Weirdly, only one right one. Other than the blisters they are fine but I expected a bit more as you say. Not as good for mid-foot striker. Also they seem to wear easily.
The width was ok for me.. I have narrow-is feet, but had plenty of room.. more than normal. So for the majority of people I'd say they are wide enough!
My fav hoka at the moment is Clifton 6. I live in East Africa where the streets are either half paved with holes or dirty but with patches! Can you recommend a good racing shoe that supplement my cliftons? I just bough clifton 7 since they last at least 800-1000km but they are not as fast.
How would you compare it to the Nike Pegasus 37's? I'm a Nike fan as if you have seen any of my videos, it is only Nike haha, so would be great to know whether the Hoka's are comparable or better for those long easy runs?
Hey! I'd probably feel a bit more comfortable with the Hoka's over a longer distance race or training run.. feel that'd hold up better and be more stable than something like the 37. These would be a slightly firmer ride and much stiffer given the carbon plate. Hope that helps and thank you for the support! :-)
I’d like to knock a few seconds off my half marathon and 10k times. My ASICS Tokyo’s are nearing the end of their life so looking for a reasonably priced replacement circa £150 or so. BTW love the wrap arrived today Thx.
Would you say HOKA's in general have more room in the toe box? I have been struggling with some narrow toe boxes with other brands and was wondering if I should give these a shot? Or another brand you would suggest for this issue?
If you look on the main Hoka website then they offer most shoes in a wide fitting. Not these ones actually but most of the main trainers they do. So well worth having a look there!
The Hoka has a different set-up (meta rocker) and drop (around 5mm less) to other brands, so when you do try them on you may die a little inside. It's probably best to start middle of the pack - Clifton or Rincon (latter being my favourite) just to give them a go. 30 day money back if you buy direct. Some people have delivery issues but mine always turn up bang on time 👍
Indeed. I didn't add that in, as wasn't sure if Hoka has designed it specifically to run that record.. still, it's a great shoe for it. Really looking forward to watching the coverage shortly!
What would you recommend for a trail race shoe, 10k to HM, i got the nike ones you have which were ace for a slow trail marathon i did and training runs but i want something to attack a trail race with, i guess dryish and wet mud will be different thanks for your help.
Hey Scott. The Nike Pegasus 36 Trail will be good for that distance.. really enjoying running fast trails in mine! I guess you have the Trail 2, which I reviewed on here..which is better for longer distances on the trails. Good luck!
@@BenParkes Awsome thanks Ben, yes got the peg 2's on your recommendation and love them was my first ever trail marathon and went great, hopefully see you at a race sometime soon, for that 10k PB check out leeds 10k \ abbey dash, if either are allowed to go on, renowned PB course. Sir, Which one can be better for the half marathon with an easy & comfortable pace, Hoka carbon x2 or Saucony endorphin pro 2? Waiting for your answer.
@@BenParkes Sir, Plz don't mind. I just want to ensure that Somebody says, Endorphin Pro somewhat collapses on the medial side of the shoe and is difficult for them to run in because of that. Is it true..or did you face such kind of issue?
Thanks for the detailed review! Seems like a great shoe! I have yet to try Hoka, but they've got a number of shoes that I'd LOVE to get my feet into and try/review. I've been enjoying recently (and have a review on my channel) the Skechers Razor Elite carbon shoe. I think the carbon plate is not as stiff as in the Hoka, but it's a super lightweight and lively shoe! Anyways, thanks again for all you do on your channel! Great to see it growing too!
Thanks very much Chad. Will see if I can find that Skechers shoe.. they aren't a very big brand here in the UK, but there are a few stockists. All the best to you and your chancel! :-)

@@BenParkes ok that's great thanks, planning on the best trainers leading up to the Vitality big Half! And no problem, keep up the great content 👌🏽
I’d like to knock a few seconds off my half marathon and 10k times. My ASICS Tokyo’s are nearing the end of their life so looking for a reasonably priced replacement circa £150 or so. BTW
love the wrap arrived today Thx.
Hoka rocket X or the new Saucony Enforphin pro is out in a few weeks. Could be a good couple of options. Awesome you like the wrap, thank you!
@@BenParkes I think I have a wide toe box but narrow mid-foot/heel so I never really thought wide would work for me. I'll look into it thanks.
I never tried a Hoka shoe. If I want a Hoka, which one is semilar to Brooks Ghost 12 which I enjoy?
Best to try and see what works for you but I’ve changed from Brooks Ghost to Hoka Rincon 2 and enjoying so far.
Some people have delivery issues but mine always turn up bang on time 👍
@@AndreaElliott Thank you!
You saying that the shoe is better for longer runs really makes sense since the shoe was desinged to break the 100km record
Indeed. I didn't add that in, as wasn't sure if Hoka has designed it specifically to run that record.. still, it's a great shoe for it. Really looking forward to watching the coverage shortly!
Any view on the newer Hoka Carbon x3?
What alternatives do you prefer then for this same purpose?
Have a nice evening
Have they widened the toe box compared to the first version?
Can anyone recommend a fast 5k/10k shoe???? I'd like to try out a carbon plate shoe, just to see what the fuss is about..anything under €180!!!!!!
Hoka rocket x
@@BenParkes thanks Ben, hoka rocket x ordered, should have tomorrow
@@utsia thanks SE U, looking at he price is out of my range. I have ordered the hoka rocket x. But if you could advise a tempo/ long run shoe that would be great
What happened to the music in your outro it was great why would you take it out
I finished the video at 9 mins 48.. so to add the music would have taken it to 10 mins 08. Less people are likely to watch a 10 minute review video than a 9 minute one.. didn’t want to edit the video down anymore, so left went without it. Will be back next time!
Sir, Which one can be better for the half marathon with an easy & comfortable pace, Hoka carbon x2 or Saucony endorphin pro 2? Waiting for your answer.
Saucony
@@BenParkes Sir, Plz don't mind. I just want to ensure that Somebody says, Endorphin Pro somewhat collapses on the medial side of the shoe and is difficult for them to run in because of that. Is it true..or did you face such kind of issue?
What size are you in Sauconys? I got to go up half a size in Hokas. Is that right?
All the Hoka's and Saucony's I've had have been the same size.
Which Hoka would be like the Nike Nike tempo next % please ?
I guess the rocket x would be closest.. but not really very similar at all.
@@BenParkes just gonna go for a pair then, they do look nice and like you I like that spring in my step 👍
Mach 4... fav... can u do a review on it...
Fun fact, 90% of heel strikers claim they are not heel strikers
Kitata and Kosgei aka King & Queen of 2020 London strike at least partly with heel.
Clifton 7 are great!
@@BenParkes Thanks for the quick comment Ben! You're a real inspiration and a breath of fresh air!
Amazing shoe, better than the previous.
really nice trainer but.... durability of sole isn't. must of done 50km and took them back.
I order this one. Great shoe like the Hoka Rincon 2.
Idont like nike ,I love hoka shoes !
10K /21K RocketX
42K/ 50K CarbonX2
Easy run day , Rincon2
LSD ,Clifton edge
Trail :
10K>50K Torrent 2 / Evo speedgoat
50K >100K,100miles on speed trail , Evo speedgoat
techinal trail 100k/100miles , Evo Mafate 2
It is an interesting shoe.
Sounds like clifton is the better shoe
I really surprised!! My opinion after trying Carbon x2 is horrible, worse shoes I've ever got
Even with it being a 2019 shoe I still think the next % is the king of the carbon plate shoes for anything over 10k.
What do others think ? agree or disagree ?
If you disagree what shoes do you suggest giving a go as an alternative ?
Carbon X
Hoka does not want your business😤
I like the Arahi, just bought the gaviotas for more stability. I have a 170 miles ragnar style charity run in a few weeks. Switching out every two miles with 4 others teams. Should be fun and for a good cause. Run is for Florida fallen soilders. Florida.runforthefallen.org
Looks like you play in the mud with your shoes .
Hoka, always will be a bad shoe. The midsole is terrible
