Buddhism and Stoicism helps me with this - why worry about things you have no control over? Worry or work on what you can control - which isn’t much anyway. Be happy you are breathing - that’s enough
I find the transition from “be aware of your breathing” to “do one thing toward a goal” to be extremely disjointed and difficult. If it is enough that you are breathing in that moment, why work toward anything at all? But then 6 weeks later you feel unfulfilled. Should you simply forget that some life situations are nicer than others, that it’s nicer to have a pool in your backyard and create fulfilling projects and go on family trips, because it’s enough to breathe and you have no problems? If you can’t visit Sardinia with your family and you would like to, then clearly you do have a problem. Whether you view it as a problem you have now or a problem your future self will have if you don’t find a different life situation, is irrelevant, but what’s not irrelevant is simply breathing and doing basic daily tasks without thinking about the future will not fulfill most people. You have to think about the future sometimes or you are likely to wind up homeless. You can view it as, “just thinking, not actually trying to live in and (suffer because of) a future that hasn’t happened yet”, but I find it very hard to make the jump from awareness of the moment to planning. As soon as I am planning anything, I am already lost in the sauce. Fact is, we aren’t dogs, and thank god because as I recall, my first dog died due to an infection that came from a wound from scratching due to skin allergies which it had been on steroids for its whole life. My second dog was neurotic its whole life from being mistreated by its first owner. If only they could have been self aware, they may have not suffered as much as they did.

The row started because Rab used to say “och aye the noo” a lot, especially when he took a slug from a bottle, and he felt that Eckhart was ripping him off by planning to call his book “The power of now” . To be fair, he had a point , because nowhere in any of the editions of “Power of Now” is there any dedication or acknowledgment to Rab, full name Robert Macguffin. Check it for yourself. It seems to be a classic case of cultural appropriation on the part of Eckhart, in this case, from the Scottish.
