This snippet from one of our Bait Finesse System (BFS) fishing adventures over summer features wild trout fishing in a classic small stream environment.
This kind of river is the perfect setting for short rods and delicate gear - including the ultralight baitcasting reels used in BFS fishing. For this trip John was trying out his tiny Shimano 4-piece travel rod which measures just 4ft 2" long and is rated as an ultralight action. Because he's a big fan of the classic "round reel" style baitcaster, the perfect partner for that is his Shimano Conquest BFS...
In fact, here's the detailed rundown of the Baitcasting Gear used in this video:
Rod Shimano Cardiff Native Special B42UL-3
Shimano Reel 17 Calcutta Conquest BFS HG (left hand wind)
Major Craft Zoner SP Minnow 50mm 2g (actually 1.7g with single hooks)
Berkley Trilene fluorocarbon 4lb 0.18mm

Splendid! Just splendid :D
Thank you - really glad you enjoyed the clips. Paul
Great to see some captures John! Oh to be able to cast as well as you guys!
Thanks Neil, and those wild trout are definitely way more colourful than the name "brown trout" would suggest...
Nice video...good catch...nice fish..fantastic
Thank you Shark X 🤟
Hi guys
Another short bur brilliant video 👍
Keep them coming pls.
Tight lines 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
Thank you Gavin, again that's really kind of you to say. I want to get out and shoot some stuff with John's new glass rod (and I'm angling for a go with it myself)...
thumb up! You are a real expert of finesse fishing.
Thank you (on John's behalf) I know he'll be really happy with your kind wishes, Paul
Brilliant video keep them coming 👍
Super kind of you Ben, we'll do our best!
I take it would work well with jig head lure tyings such as woolley bugger patterns ?
Yes - I've even done it (as an extreme example) with a 0.48-g bead head olive nymph - but streamers and sculpins should all be perfectly viable with the right gear: ua-cam.com/video/5xrps8e08ZE/v-deo.html
Difficult to access trout streams down south. So many “fly only”. Found a few, like hens teeth!
Hang on to those ones you did find Mark! Also a good excuse to keep exploring... Paul.
very fancy! need some of these vids on my channel!
Watch out, one of these days we might fly out and pester you for a collab hahaha. Paul.
Lovely fishing is your conquest stock or have you got avail spool
Hi there John's is stock spool (and the crank has Ali Express wooden handles). Paul
What trout rod is that?
Hi Jeffrey - it's the Shimano Cardiff Native Special B42UL-3 - there's a review video here: ua-cam.com/video/M72Y1AdvdsM/v-deo.htmlsi=slFov7uvV5VI89ny&t=174
Well i must say i am disappointed to see such fine fly anglers turn to such base methods to catch the noble trout. you have fallen under the influence of dark forces. you should confess your sins and seek forgiveness.
Haha, yes t'is true Peter... (whisper the following though; BFS casting is harder than fly casting.... 😲)
