    Heroes of Might & Magic was only PARTIALLY inspired by master of magic , it's main inspiration is New World computing's King's Bounty released in 1990 .
    The game's battle system is based almost wholecloth upon the original king's bounty.
    King's Bounty was released on : The Commodore 64 , Amiga , PC-98 , Fujitsu FM Towns , DOS , the Apple II, Mac OS , Fm Towns, the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive , and lastly on Microsoft Windows as part of an anthology.

      It seems like many people haven't heard of the original King's Bounty besides the EA published Sega Genesis port.

    One of the best games ever, still play it to this day. Even prefer some of its mechanics more than the sequel.
    Can't wait for the Succession Wars Mod so that we can get Heroes III's HD Mod quality of life improvements with a game closer to Heroes II.

    This game really shines in multiplayer. If you say it's not complex, then you have only scratched the surface.

  • @shankao

    it's not "obviously based on master of magic" because it's based on "King's bounty" (1990) a game that, apart from being developed by the same company as this one, contains almost the same combat and exploration style than HOMM.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  7 років тому +4

      +shankao sahagun Interesting... I didn't know about that game at all... However, based on what I've looked up, there's definitely aspects of Master of Magic in the Heroes series which weren't present in King's Bounty, so it's probably safer to say the Heroes series has elements of both. :B

      I would also mention the Warlords series as an inspiration.

      In essence King's Bounty is like if HOM&M only featured one "Hero" who was your player character and was (slightly) more like an RPG.
      King's Bounty kinda sucks, though its also included with all versions of the first game except the GOG release (even my copy on the Ultimate Strategy Archives includes it despite it not being mentioned anywhere on the box or manual) so if you happen to have it, it might be worth a look. Of course, considering I didn't like HOM&M1 either (and 2 and 3 look like more of the same) me hating it probably doesn't mean much.

      Modern King's Bouty re-imagining is quite good, though it stagnated as sequels came...

    Easily my favorite strategy game of all time. Love literally everything about this game. Also, as mentioned below, this was based on Kings Bounty, but is much improved. Both series are still going, but I like this one more.

    I absolutely love this series... right up to the 5th game. Got hooked in the early 90s when a friend introduced me to the first game. Because of it, Doom and a couple of other games I convinced my parents that we needed a PC... for school.

      Third and 4th both are way on top among the series. In 4th your Hero can fight as well among other things. Play that to find out. The story of all of them is also much adventurous especially 4th.
      3rd HOMM is way ahead. It has much better balance of graphics, music, and maps then many games that came after 5th.

  • @Kirillow

    I am shocked by this but you seem to be playing HOMM for the first time. Is that so?

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  7 років тому

      +Kirillow Yup. I tend to avoid strategy games as I'm generally not very good at them, plus I don't enjoy them all that much, or rather, I don't enjoy them enough to want to invest dozens of hours into campaigning through them; Games made by Bullfrog have been the only exception to that for whatever reason. The only game genre I enjoy less than strategy is MMORPG.

    I think I spend half of summer 1996 driving an hour with my friend to his friends house every Saturday. We would sit around the computer 10 hours straight with my friend, his friend and his friends brother to play HOMM1 and Destruction Derby. I cant recall any other games we played :o. It all ended after Quake came out, cant play that one in hot seat mode :) so we moved to internet cafes/lan parties.
    HOMM 1-3 are great slow paced social games.

  • @laser8550

    The review is for Heroes II: Price of Loyalty which is actually the expansion pack to Heroes II: Succession Wars
    The original has a campaign which tells the story of Roland vs Archibald fighting for the throne after their father dies. The expansion campaigns are more standalone
    Town music in Succession Wars is different from Price of Loyalty, and if not mistaken, composed by Paul Anthony Romero who did music for many of the games
    And it should be mentioned many of the Might and Magic games (both Heroes and the first person RPG titles) link the story to each other until 3DO blew it later

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  7 років тому

      +Laser 85 While I am playing the expanded version, the game lets you choose between original or expansion content, both for standard maps and the campaigns. I probably should clear that up in the video description. :B

    There are some advanced strategy techniques, like skipping certain buildings and getting by with minimal resources, or tactical combat tricks, like splitting some army unit into single-unit stacks and surrounding your archers, baiting out a retaliation on a single unit (since most enemies only retaliate once per round), or using many tiny stacks of fast units to make enemies run around while your ranged units pepper them, but those are mostly needed on higher difficulties (which simply cheat you out of resources, and give freebies to AI, difficulty is NOT balanced in this series) or multiplayer... There are also fun strategies like dragongeddon: Armageddon spell destroys both your and enemies armies heavily, but black dragons are immune to magic. This was amazing in early Heroes, but completely ruined in later, 3D games of the series. Another fun thing is using Necropolis and just hoarding an endless skeleton stack.
    Oh, and balance is poor here, unlike HoMM 3, where they have angels and pikemen instead of peasants, Castle here (Knight/human city) sucks horribly... Peasants are only good when a necromancer wants some skellies. Third game also adds secondary skill to your hero on level-up, apart from 4 stats you have here. And Heroes 3 campaigns have you generally follow a single hero, whose stats and items transfer to next level. Map generator for free mode gives endless replayability... Later games are worse, but I enjoyed 4, with all of its letdowns. A very similar game is Disciples series, though it has more jRPG vibe (no movement in combat, each unit levels up individually, no stacks). I HIGHLY recommend Disciples 2 and Heroes 2/3 campaigns for killing time, relaxing, and single maps having hotseat parties with friends.

      +Kasumi Ryona See, this kind of stuff never occurs to me, thus why my ability to play strategy games is lackluster at best. :P

    • @KasumiRINA
      @KasumiRINA 6 років тому

      @Pixelmusement Oh, I played for years without learning those advanced tricks, most of them are bordering on exploits, like keeping a lot of heroes on walking distance of each other, allowing you to transfer the army through the whole map in one turn (fourth game fixed that). Just mentioned that on top of overall simplicity there's some pro stuff like that, but really, the only thing that's missable for most players in Heroes 2 is the ability to split stacks by either ctrl or shift-clicking clicking the units. Helps to have multiple flyers for distraction or low-level troops for surrounding your archers after shoving them in a corner, it works better in HoMM 3 where Heroes got 7 unit slots instead of just 5 here. Apart from that, the strategy is really like you said, figuring out when to wait, where to move and who to attack... and well, what to build and which units to recruit first with limited resources. Right clicking usually gives popup with all stats. Speed influences both turn order and movement, IIRK. Rest is self-explanatory.

    Thanks for making this video, I appreciate your work.
    You didn't mention the 'Legion' monster group size.
    On that note, massive numbers does not always mean massive strength strength, there's a fun map that has a Legion of Peasants that acts as a barrier against leaving the starting area. They can be killed using < 100 ranged attackers since peasants are slow, have terrible morale, and can be further slowed with a spell.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  7 років тому

      +Xander Smith True. In order to know the REAL strength of a group of units, you also need to know what kind they are which in turn can tell you their HP, attack, defence, etc., if you have that stuff memorized or access to the manual. :B

    How many episodes have you started with the phrase, "oh boy." I swear I've heard you say that more than once before! LOL, it's never a good sign. Oh yes, those SVGA 640x480 graphics. I secretly prefer the smaller resolution games. Something about the visuals that don't give off the same charm. I'm probably just weird with that. I'm surprised you were able to review this game given your production time frame. Thanks for tackling it! I think the basic overview was fine. Even if it took 18 minutes, hot damn, this episode went by fast! I don't know how you do these so quickly.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  7 років тому +1

      +Retro Island Gaming Well, at least with today's, "oh boy" was less a sign of the quality of the game and more a sign of just how much time the game expected me to put into it! Generally speaking, with games like this which have long play-times, I use a combination of my own gameplay, manuals, watching other's gameplay of later sections, and FAQs to ensure I get as many details right as I can, but as I often make mistakes, that's what the video description is for! :B

      haha, yeah, you definitely set yourself up to face the wraith of the all knowing UA-cam watchers. I admire that though. I'd say overall you get enough facts down straight. How did you upscale the game to 1080p?

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  Рік тому

      I first do an exact pre-scale of the recorded, lossless game footage up to 5x its normal resolution of 320x200 to 1600x1000. I then perform a filtered stretch on the result to 1440x1080. Even though this is not a pixel-accurate result, because it was pre-scaled, all blurring between the game's pixels is limited to a single actual 1080p pixel, which eliminates the "shimmer" effect you would otherwise get trying to keep the pixels perfect bringing it up to 1080p. This isn't exactly an unknown trick, but it's what I've been doing for YEARS and yet surprisingly few people are aware this even works. :P

    Game was real fun for the time, but the series peaked with the 3rd game and never recovered. Even after they tried to improve it, the flaws in the basic formula was becoming apparent. There wasn't any other viable strategy other than concentrating all your forces into a single army of doom with one built up hero (with other heroes being mere taxis to get new units to your super army). Defeat was also way too punishing. If you lost a single battle with your main army, you might as well quit or reload. It was especially the end if it was a multiplayer game, which ended up being 98% pussyfooting around the other guy's main army, and 2% fighting the single one battle that would decide the whole game.

    Heh. Watching your footage, I can tell you'd never played HoMM2 much. And if you have a level 12 hero get defeated, that hero can show up at level 12 for one of the AI players, or yourself, if you are lucky.
    All that aside, HoMM2 is my favorite of the franchise. I still play it to this day. I have a copy installed on my tablet. It only comes with the one demo map from way back when, and however many fan-created maps. But if you own the game, you can move the original map files over to play them.

      Titans. Don't get me wrong, black dragons were the best unit in the game, but I loved playing the Dominion map as a wizard, getting the Town Portal spell, then after a VERY long time ('cause I don't want to "win" the game until I do this), I have an army of nothing but Titans. And then it was fun going after dragons or whatnot guarding treasures that had grown to 4000 unit strength by the time you engaged them.
