The great thing about Pavement is how they sound out of tune, but only enough to make their sound instantly recognizable. Brighten the Corners is their best album in my opinion, every song is great.
That's what it is!
What’s beautiful about that is that your actual entirely correct a ton of their songs don’t use a standard guitar tuning which makes it really annoying to learn sense you have to constantly change your guitars tuning
i read something where someone said people gathered to see pavement play was like watching someone make a sandwich in a cathedral. found the quote:
“This is the nicest venue I've ever been in, and it's like going to a cathedral and seeing a bunch of guys make a sandwich.
Were you old enough to see them in the early 90s?
This is in standard tuning you dumbass.
This band is comfort food for your soul
This and Gold Soundz are 5 star cuisines.
Comfort food for thought
Indeed

0:50 Malkmus riding on a bike like it's 2020.
Lol
#stayathome #StaySafeWearMask bro!
My thoughts exactly. :)
These guys were doing the social distancing thing before it was a thing.
For how much I listen to pavement idk how i missed this. hahahaha
People call this white people music, but I'm black and I love it.
Music has no race, enjoy it if you like it!
it's just awesome music my friend....i agree with you
I’m Mexican and I just think of them as a really good band.
[Serial Thrilla] this has made me nod so hard 🙌
[Serial Thrilla] - all races make genius music/art.
Description does not discern invitation.
Few people know that Pavement were years ahead of Google and Tesla in developing driverless car technology
You the island!
0:50 they also where ahead of covid
Do you want a shady lane or no?
and facemasks
There is a driver. He is invisible.
The coolest band on earth.
Take the cool out of the equation. And give it another take. Brilliant, melodic and necessary. Absolutely grateful for this band. Important! But to be measured, and in all fairness, perhaps they would have actually been great if they weren't so cool
An actual exchange I had with Steven Malkmus as I ate an ice cream sandwich:
Me: Hey man, nice set!
Malkmus: Hey man, nice ice cream!
Me: Thanks! It was free!
Malkmus: That’s how you do it!
The end
Reminds me of digging through my sister's record collection. Finding records like this, Sebadoh, and Lemonheads stuff totally made the 90s for me.
One of the greatest parts of growing up before the internet. I would buy albums just because some artist I loved recommended it. I would usually hate it at first, and gradually, many would come to be my all time favorites. "I paid 15 dollars for this, and by God, I'm going to give this album a chance!"
Gar Ki : for me it was picking up free street press every week at the record store , our alternative radio station double J, & word of mouth. I never bought an album that I wasn't primed for.
@@garki1369 yep, I'd buy an album hate it and think what did I do! Then think we'll I might as well listen to the whole thing, still not like it. Then a week later a song would be in my head and then I love the album! Normally if I like a song on the first listen I hate it after 10. I think because it's too predictable.
Sebadoh
You ripped off the show Loudermilk (2017-2020). It's great!
Dude at 0:50 was ahead of his time with the Coronavirus chic look
One of the best band to ever exist. I wish my existence was their music
I'm from Brazil and I met this band in my teens, in the 1990s. I just love it! Pavement!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Me diz por favor...Os anos 90 foram isso tudo mesmo q dizem?kkk
Pavement pra sempre!!!
Wow, that's brilliant. Wish I'd met them back then. Were you in the US (or another country), or were they on tour and makin there way through Brazil?
[....dunno why, but i hope you met them there. That just sounds beautiful. Hangin w/ Stephen Malkmus and the lot on Copacabana beach (or thats what I'm picturin anyway. And it's sweet AF🏖️🎸🌞 )].
A friend of mine gave me Crooked Rain Crooked Rain LA's Desert Origins with the words: "Topi, you might like this, I don't." I listened it and was hooked. Now I own almost all Pavement & other Malkmus albums. I love his voice.
😂😅😂 so sweet! What a nice and funny friend!
Where does your name come from?
Malkmus has got style, miles and miles, so much style that it's wasted.
@@zabe428 I'm a finn. Topi is shortened from Topias which is finn version of Tobias. Linkala, my surname, is an finnishsation of Lindberg. My father's grandfather and his three sons came to Helsinki to change the swedish name into a finnish one in late 1800 when the wave of findlandization was going in Finland. They wanted to get Linkola but that was just taken and reserved so they took Linkala. Nice to know that everyone that has that surname in Finland is actually related to me at least by my great grandfather.
Of the three sons the oldest inhereted the small farm in Valkeakoski and never married and left no known offspring. The middle one moved to Helsinki and had one son (my father) and three daugthers. My father had only one son, me, so my job was to keep the name going in Helsinki. But my little sister had three sons and never changed her surname so now those three has the the name going on. The Youngest moved to Tampere and had several sons so in Tampere the surname is commoner than in Helsinki but actually one of the male offsprings in Tampere moved to Helsinki and so now there are two diffrent lines of Linkalas living in Helsinki. I've met the one who moved from Tampere and he knew exactly who I was when I introduced myself. Small family lines are like that.
this song is total genius - in a small and appropriate way.

Lyrics:
Blind date with a chancer, we had oysters and dry lances
And the check when it arrived, we went dutch dutch dutch
Dutch a redder shade of neck on a whiter shade of trash
And this Emory board is given me a rash

A shady lane
Everybody wants one
A shady lane
Everybody needs one
Oh my God, oh your God, oh his God, oh her God
It's everybody's God
The worlds collide
But all that We want is a shady lane
Glance don't stare
Soon you're being told to recognize your heirs
No not me
I'm an island of such great complexity
Distress surrounds
In the muddy peaceful center of this town
Tell me off
In the hotel lobby right in front of all the bellboys
And the over friendly concierge
A shady lane
Everybody wants one
A shady lane
Everybody needs one
Oh my God, oh your God, oh his God, oh her God
It's everybody's God
The worlds collide
But all that We want is a shady lane
Thankss
When his head disappeared but he still kept singing, I felt that.
This takes me way back and it still sounds fresh.. Loved this band for years..
Comfort sound, comfort picture, happy I found this band
I truly admire Spike Jonze.
Has anyone watched Pavement: Slow Century (2002) ?

I can never make up my mind about Pavement as a band...but man do I love this song.

One of the most haunting lyrics ever.
The way to describe an NPC before it was cool
Fuck that hit
This is the first Pavement song I ever hear back in 99 :)
I was born here in West Oakland but lived in Modesto during my “punk” years. This band and this song, changed my life. Anyone who went to Rasputin’s in Berkeley during the early 2000s probably met me. I will always love Stephen Malkmus for these years! Still livin’ in Ghosttown West Oakland! Life is a trip yo!
Have you had any encounters with Grandaddy?
Stephen Malkmus is such a gifted vocalist man.
All these years and I had no idea Spike Jonze directed this.
My 2 yr old Shih Tzu chilled w/ me today, actually watched some of the old videos on the TV w/ me & I showed him how to strum a guitar. Totally normal things we GenXer’s do. He was intrigued!
My friend tells me he's been waiting 29 years to correctly identify Pavement's sound/genre.
Nerd folk.
The Fall covers band
ND (non-denominational) rock
Slacker rock
i just found this band
thank you god
Thank you Pavement! I have collected several of your albums over the years. I appreciate how artfully filmed this video is throughout. I can feel the power of the song surge repeatedly, and especially at the end where both the mass and momentum of that car are captured and punctuated nicely(and scarily!).
Can you believe the guy who directed Her and Being John Malkovitch directed this
Really?!
@@moto-fl3rdlook at the description of the video
Back in '98 or '99 I recorded this music video from TV on VHS. Then I used it to teach myself guitar.
I grew up on shady lane lol best days of my life. It took me almost 28 years to find this band and I'm glad I found them. Beautiful beautiful beautiful
If you grew up on it how did it take 28 years to find it?
@@moto-fl3rd the street I grew up on was called shady lane.
@@mattrasbury7539 literally grew up on Shady Lane, lane? I didn't grow up an a street or a lane. Maybe I should search for songs about state highways. Might find a gem!

Absolutely 😮
That feeling you get when you are afraid to go to your 2nd high school reunion, because it has been 15 years and you can't even save money to make a house payment. And you don't see the next 5 years being any better.

Have you heard of The Fall?
@@marknewbold2583 Pavement made a few songs (before they were big) that sounded like The Fall... and now you guys use this to cope and cry in every comment section because you're mad Pavement became better haha
Amazing song, Amazing album, Amazing band. Just fantastic!
Love this band
Of course it's directed by a Spike Jonze
I want a Spike Jonze!

Fun Fact : the whole 90s were directed by Spike Jonze. He quitted in 2001.

After Nirvana and Soundgarden imploded, it's like every other band became Weezer; and I mean that as a compliment! Miss those days...
I think Pavement's obsessed with breakfast food.
Spike Jonze is amazing
This was their first hit that I heard in 1997. Still their best album.
I remember the first time I saw this video and how excited I was to see what looked like my car (an '88 Pontiac Sunbird) to the right of Steve's shoulder. It's the little things that brighten the corners.
Olá moça
Excited for moments in which I will listen to this song again and again and always
A shady lane… everybody wants one

How many Pavement music videos have milk in them? I'm at 3 right now...
if you still alive. Let me know which videos are on your list
@@sebastian4451 Shady Lane, Stereo, and Gold Soundz
although there are four if we're able to stretch things a bit - in Father to a Sister of Thought, there's
1) a finished glass of what looks like milk
2) the band drinking something out of a cup in the parking lot (could be milk because there are cows in the video)
3) milk in that nursing bottle (which he shoots at a cow so yeah the joke writes itself there)
cheers lol
