Here's a full tour of my model railroad that was born from a 2.5'x5' layout 33 years ago and expanded when I moved into my current house.
Let me know what projects you'd like to see me tackle next on this layout.

Great layout. Love your setup looking forward to see it
Thank you! More to come.
Fantastic layout, thank you for sharing.
Thank you 😊
Really Cool layout..alot of industries to switch! Some cool bridge scenes. And its a Canadian based layout.look forward to more videos
Thanks, I’m hoping to start doing some simple operating sessions even if the industries are not yet finished. Just have to clean the track well aside from haven’t run trains on some parts of the layout for several years.
Nicely done
Thank you!
You have a very nice pike. I even snapped a few screen shots to reference for use my railway.
FYI - I'm your 200th subscriber!
Thanks. Glad my layout is a good reference for what your planning to do. And congrats on being my 200th sub!
Fantastic modeling!!
I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work. 👍👍
Thank you! I’m eager to dive into some new projects on the layout this winter.
Man i would love to see how it keeps on developing! It looks so good already! :D
Thanks! I didn’t do much for several years on it so this winter hope to get lots done. Let me know if there’s something in particular you’d like to see me tackle first.
Awesome. Love the Canadian icons throughout.
Thanks, gotta show that national pride. 🇨🇦
nice - 33 years in progress, ... you've made more progress in your 33 than I have in my 55 years since I started my N layout. In rebuild number X.x now.
Thank you. We all go at our own pace. It’s a lifelong hobby for many of us so might as well take it easy. Rebuilding is also good as you have gained skills and experience that will make it much better. 😊
This is such an interesting layout. Thank you for sharing G
Glad you find it interesting! More interesting stuff to come.
Cool video and channel just subscribed
Thank you, glad you like it!
Nice job thanks for posting. Again great job.
Thank you!
Very nice work and layout, thanks for sharing…
Thank you!
Nice layout,cool workbench
Thank you, not everyone has a bar as a workbench. 😃
Idea for your food plant... Maple Syrup manufacturer?
Ah that’s a good idea! Raw sap in and boxcars with finished product out.
When I have to downsize, I'll probably try to build a layout like that. It's HO for now. Good job!
Sounds good, good luck with the new layout!
@@pacificcoastminiatures N-scale has come a long way since I was into it back in the 80's.
@riogrande5761 it has - the quality of the locos alone is much better. And now with 3D printing I’m able to have detail parts at a lower cost and greater availability. Plus DCC has come a long way in terms of controlling locos - I have a few decoders that are so tiny they even fit in my small SW1200 switchers!
@@pacificcoastminiatures That's good news. I bought a Walther's N Scale SW1200 so I'll need to get it set up for DCC.
@@riogrande5761I believe that is similar tooling to the Lifelike one I have. I’ll do a shorts video showing how my decoder is installed in a day or two. I used a TCS Z2 - no sound but good luck getting sound into that small of a switcher!
Saw some amazing stuff on your layout, greetings from the Netherlands.
Thanks! More amazing stuff to come. What scale is popular in the Netherlands?
@@pacificcoastminiatures Here the scales H0 and N are the favorites. However there is a growing market for Scale 0. I believe there are also a number of modelers who prefer the TT scale. Last year we visited Eastern Germany and there is a TT manufacturer called Tilly who produces TT trains and I have to admit they look stunning. At the time I had my first model train the scale H0 was the most popular scale so I started with this scale but when more N-scale models were available I changed to the N-scale. Mainly because this scale makes it possible to run long trains on the layout. I'm looking forward to more footage of your layout. Greetings from the Netherlands.
@@jefwisse1957 Yes, HO and N are both very popular here in North America. HO is more popular because of the cheap sets you could get. N is much more expensive but it does allow for longer trains in the same space as HO, like you said. N is most popular in Japan (they use 1:150 scale) as they don't have much room in their apartments/houses for the larger scales. I think the smaller scales like N are better since you don't have to add as many details as in the larger scales - a lack of detail in the larger scales makes everything look more toy-like.
We have RC cars, planes, boats and tanks. When do we get battery operated RC model train engines?
Thanks for watching and that's a great question! Battery operated RC locomotives are popular in the larger scales such as what are used in garden railways. There is usually lots of space for the battery, receiver and the other electronics needed to control the locomotive.
In the smaller scales, the components are just not small enough (yet). In N scale in particular locomotives are only about 4-6" long and about 3/4" wide. Small batteries that could fit don't have the density to run a model locomotive for more than a few minutes at a time. Plus when running multiple locomotives, you would need different frequencies to control each one independently. However Digital Command Control (DCC) does use a kind of remote control in that the track not only provides power to the locomotives but also digital commands to tell the locomotive what speed and direction to run in as well as control lights and sound.
Looks great but I think the Staples tape dispenser box is out of scale. Looks more like O-gauge to me... Thanks for sharing this as I begin my N scale layout.
Thank you! Good observation regarding the box, I've now removed it. I don't think I'm actually going to use it in that location anyways. I already have enough going on with the turntable and engine house so want to keep the area simple. Just can't stand throwing away good boxes just in case I need them. 😉 Actually just had an idea! I might use it to mockup the snowshed before I build the real one just to see how that will look.
Nice review.
I’m curious about your helix and the resulting separation of the two levels. What radius is the helix and the % grade? And what is the resulting separation between the top of the rail lower level to the bottom of the fascia of the upper level?
Great question! I plan to do a followup video showing in depth the hidden track and the benchwork that supports all of this. I'll be sure to mention some of the design details such as grade % and separation distance. I don't remember them off the top of my head so will need to do some rough measuring. I tried to keep the radius large and the grade small to avoid issues.
Ok, I’ve subscribed so I don’t miss it. Thanks
That food mfg, is that part of the paper mill kit? Also it looks like you have some tight curves, what is you minimum radius? Thanks
Yes it is from the paper mill kit. The brick building has donated most of its walls to background flats on the lower level and in a few other places.
Minimum radius is 11” on the original 2.5x5 layout - everywhere else I tried to use the widest curves I could. Not ideal in some places. Im still toying with the idea of removing the original 2.5x5 foot section and doing a simpler track plan with a dogbone style loop that can have a bigger radius, mainly because I have several longer cars such as auto racks and an SD90MAC.
Christine.
You got it! My favourite movie by far! I used to own a few classic cars.
