I’m going this coming weekend to dive with my son. Looking for best advise to find the hogs there. I’ve got tons of numbers with ledges, hard bottom, and artificial reefs from middle grounds to 10ft. I’m thinking of hitting the 25-45 ft range. What habitat would you hit first?
Sorry for the late response, but if you are diving out of crystal river right now for hogs then I would go to about 30ft on ledges or big patches of broken bottom.
I would say it’s smart to learn how to freedive first and then add spearfishing in after you feel comfortable in the water. Also make sure you never dive with out a buddy watching/ diving with you, even if it’s shallow you can never be too safe. Another thing about when you start spearfishing is that no fish or gear is worth your life so if you need to let go of some gear to make it to the surface then do it. One last thing is see if there are any freediving or spearfishing clubs in your area, most of the time there are plenty of people looking to help new divers!
@DauntlessOutdoors I really appreciate the advice, brother. I go out of Crystal River all the time and hope one day to tag along with you guys on a trip!
Im so use to using my polespear that I wait for fish to get withing 5' before I shoot it with my gun out of instinct. Pole spears will make you a better hunter, but one thing about the bahamas is that its full of fish and they are ALL stupid. Nothing like our overfished florida fish.
I definitely want to get over to the Bahamas, also using the pole spear is pretty fun! It gives you a bigger challenge and makes it much more interesting!
Really enjoy it, fellas. Keep up the good work
Thank you, I’ll try my best!
DO, great video! I just found your channel and subscribed!
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Awesome shit man keep up the hard work.
Thank you, will do!

Thank you, I hope so too!
Awesome videos am new to spearfishing its very tiring but very fun !
Thank you! Yeah, it takes a lot of effort but it is worth it!
How deep are the tanks? Going out of homosassa for some spear fishing tomorrow
Nvm you said 25 later on lol
😂 thanks for watching!
That green slime has been around lately. Some spots have been absolutely covered
Yeah, we have been to some ledges that are absolutely filled with it making it pretty hard to dive!
How far out are you guys going for decent vis?
I’m doing my first scuba spearfishing trip Saturday.
In this episode we went about 30 miles out to get good vis, typically you don't have to go that far in crystal river.
Wish I was out there!
Yeah! It’s definitely super fun!
what reef are those tanks at?
I’m pretty sure they are hernando tanks, but I could be wrong
Are you using tanks or free diving?
All of the diving I do is freediving 👍🏽
@DauntlessOutdoors I'm really wanting to get into free diving and spear fishing. Any advice? Thanks!

Sounds good, my email is in my bio!
I’m confused about how the record gag on a pole spear is less than 20 pounds? Is this just a Crystal river record or what?
This record is the freediving world record for a gag on pole spear, I’m sure it is bigger for tank diving. The official record is 19.6lbs

That is a link to the list of records. 👍🏽
Thanks for the clarification 👍🏼
No problem!
How long do you take in between dives? I feel like if i do a 2 min dive I can’t again for a couple mins
It depends on the depth, typically 3-5 minutes for a two minute dive.
what depth you in?
They said about 30 feet
In this video the deepest we went was 40ft, and the hogfish at the end were in 15ft!
That very nice but if me and you and all peoples do that that be worse 5 years nothing to enjoy photos with 😉 hogfish love ❤️ 🦀🦀
Yes, Taking care of the reef is definitely important!
How deep
We were diving anywhere from 40-15ft!
