- The American Bladesmith Society presents the 2016 International Master Smith Knife of the Year by Master Smith Rodrigo Sfreddo, Nova Petropolis, Brazil. The skill and artistry of Master Smith Rodrigo Sfreddo is shown in this video about the making of this knife. This “Modern Gaucho” knife with integral construction was forged in Damascus steel in a “W” pattern with gold inlay stamp. The handle is in his Keyhole style, with hidden tang and polished border, and desert Ironwood handle and will be available on Saturday, June 4, 2015 at 10AM in Room# 103 at the ABS Knife Auction during the 2016 Blade Show in Atlanta, GA. That knife is a real piece of art. I love watching videos like this. I had no idea what he was doing with that handle and when it all comes together its just awesome.
I did not know this was humanly possible. Absolutely incredible craftsmanship. I have much to learn if I ever want to be this good

So great getting a chance to watch this master smith at work.. Getting to see the techniques and tools and attention to detail of most JS and MS bladesmiths is always a pleasure to watch. Who would've thought that Rodrigo did so much of his work using merely files, a simple foredom and a thinly backed flat platen on his grinder to make his beautiful & flawless integrals! I was expecting a lot more mill work! Great videography and music as well. Thanks as always for sharing. :)

Fantastically beautiful. Very practical looking design too. Kind of sad to think that it will...most likely, spend it's life in a display case rather than getting bloody, dirty and resharpened for a lifetime. Just my opinion. Georgous craftsmanship!
I wouldn’t dream of question a master Smith’s ability, but it seemed as though he was hammering some some very cold steel at around the 2min mark. Kind of made me clinch a bit.
He's probably just planishing, to get it smooth and not forging it. It could also just be the light.

Beautiful finished knife at 5:31. Not a fan of a downward curve geometry in a chef knife (not the optimum ergo IMO), but it is still a stunner ... the damascus, the integral handle, wow.

very pretty --is this knife art or for use-?-does the bolt that went into the wood anchor into the tang ? I can only see that handle coming apart with much use.Aside from opinions does anybody know how this would work out ? Maybe I'll ask Rodrigo Sfreddo .
+homey Yes, the bolt was used as a tang, and the fit is very tight. It goes into the steel almost to the curve where the blade begins.
Very fine work, resulting in a beautiful knife; but I'm confused, wouldn't tempering the blade make it impossible to engrave it for the gold inlay??
+xman870096 I'm far from an expert, but it looked to me like when it was heated for the quench, the spine was at a lower temp than the edge.
he stamped the inlay before the heat treat and tempering, then inlaid.
for anyone else that sees this, carbide will engrave hardened steel and the spine was most likely not softer since the hardness helps the pattern pop. A mastersmith would never differentially temper damascus as far as i am aware.
