I think my issue is that whenever opera productions (and other old texts) go for a modern style, they also have to do a dark, grimy, atmosphere alongside it. It's like those turquoise cowboy boots Aigul is wearing. They're definitely in fashion, but the mood of this production doesn't match the disposition of the kids who make it "in fashion". Those turquoise cowboy boots are about fun, absurdism and whackyness! The reason why Barbie or Saltburn did so well.
I love the creativity of these, but wish they'd branch out a bit.

I totally agree. The costume designs were atrocious! it seems like the goal was to style EVERYONE on stage in the most unflattering way possible. The whole cast looked like dressed from thrift shops. And the color scheme hardly screamed passion 😢 The choreography was also very awkward and sometimes cringy. It was painful to
watch. I liked the idea of translating it into different era, but the designs were a total flop.🤮

No problem with music and cast, but sheesh....that production looked like it came right out of Walmart and Target. And the setting did not fit the music as Bizet conceived it.

Tal cual, están arruinando la buena cultura. Es como cuando te compras una obra literaria clásica y te encontrás con la novela cambiada, yo voy a la librería y le revoléo el libro por la cabeza. Es una estafa.

I saw this live at AMC earlier this year, and I am SO excited because this weekend, I'm going to New York to visit my son and daughter-in-law and they got tickets for us to see this and hear her live at The Met. I'm 74, a lifelong opera buff, but I've never been to The Met. I am thrilled beyond words to know that I'll get to hear her live! What a beautiful, pure voice she has!

Modern adaptions always just turn it into something unaesthetic and trashy. This looks like the ghetto area of the Bronx, not as it was in the late 1800's in France which is what it is meant to be.

I’ve seen this production twice now and I agree that her voice is small, but very beautiful. It carried well enough during calmer moments (I sat in the Grand Tier both times) but the orchestra was definitely holding back so as not to completely swallow her. While we loved her performance overall, vocally I don’t think she’s a great fit for Carmen as her lower register isn’t powerful enough. It was in the few moments where she entered true soprano territory that the strength and beauty of her voice shone through.

That’s because the voice gets louder as you go higher. Voice will ALWAYS be louder in the 5th octave. And plenty of sopranos back in the old days had very strong lower register because they taught chest voice. She has zero chest in her singing which also makes her voice very nasal and displeasing to hear. This is why a lot of opera singers have smaller voices now, not the big ones in the past. This way of teaching/singing is killing opera…

Why, oh why, is this number sung like a dirge! It gets slower every time I hear it. Carmen's singing about a restless bird, not a stuffed turkey. She's flirting, teasing. Go back in time and listen to Rise Stevens sing it. You'll be intrigued instead of falling asleep.

I have a very old score copy (it's on imslp) from a French publisher, 1875. The song is in 2/4, and very clearly marked that the quarter note = 72. I'm clocking this version at 56 beats, nearly a third slower. But there are lots of old recordings here on UA-cam in the 69-72 range, so when did the Habanera run out of gas? Read the source material, Prosper Merrimee's Carmen, and get an idea of the original character.

For the folks in this thread, just go see the show before you make any uneducated or broad assumptions about the size of her voice.
If you don't, then there's no reason to act as if you know how it carries throughout the house.

This is a soprano - soubrette, wrongly trained/placed as a mezzo.
Come on, anyone can hear and see it - her body structure and her face shape. Her high notes come with ease and that Carmen low register is completely swallowing her.

She has a beautiful voice but she doesn't have the breath support needed for the legati. Her phrases sound VERY disconnected and there's just too much empty space because she can't sustain the melody enough. Her voice is also small which means the chorus can’t sing at full volume - nor the orchestra play loud enough, but worst of all, this means she can’t vary dynamics enough for expression. The result is a pretty, but bland interpretation. It seems they've cast her based on looks and vocal color but I don't think her technique/voice is developed enough for this role.
