Memphis is risking a postseason ban by playing James Wiseman - Jay Bilas | SportsCenter
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лис 2019
- Jay Bilas joins SportsCenter to discuss the NCAA ruling James Wiseman ineligible, and the potential ramifications for the Memphis Tigers for playing the heralded freshman. Bilas says NCAA bylaws state that Memphis could ultimately be banned from the postseason for playing a student-athlete that has been ruled ineligible. Wiseman, the projected top pick in the 2020 NBA draft, was deemed ineligible by the NCAA for allegedly receiving impermissible benefits from Memphis coach Penny Hardaway.

Absolutely ridiculous.. These kids shouldn't be subjected to punishment to such ignorant rules by greedy crooked organization.
Wrong, the rules are clear, he could've gone to any school he wanted but he chose the school of the guy who gave him and his family money.
@@KNByam That sounds like he's grateful for someone helping him when his family needed it? It doesn't change the fact that the rule itself is clearly flawed as are the NCAA's policies

Maurice Brown Weirdly enough the NCAA isn’t seeing a dip in revenue this season, also weirdly enough the NCAA didn’t take any hit at all back when Lebron and other players left straight out of high school to go pro
The NCAA really sucks
If he had signed with Duke...Kentucky....NC this wouldn't be an issue. Instead he choose to play in a city with high poverty crime and a history of racial tensions. And the one thing that brings that city together is a successful basketball program. Ask Derrick Rose!
I find myself agreeing with the players almost 100% of the time. The NCAA are plantation owners. I hope Memphis gives other schools the courage to also stand up against the NCAA.

@@lanceeaster3894 josh pastner was a recruiter for Memphis my hometown back 2009 having the biggest class coming in 2010 with 5 top 150 players two being Mcdonalds all American. @@arquisstewart9729 no doubt it happens everywhere and every year. But if the ncaa doesnt know or cant prove, then there isnt any thing they can do. There are hundreds of cases where people pretty much know the player (parent) was paid, but proving it is is a different story.
Wow this is interesting gamble! On one hand, Memphis could be banned from the post-season by playing him but on the other hand, the chances of them reaching the post-season without playing him is slim to none. Also by playing he can maintain his nba draft projections, and any ban will make the NCAA look bad in this current "players deserve to get paid" environment. Hats off the Memphis!
So wait, someone paid for his family to move to Memphis and he is ineligible for it?
yeah, the coach paid for it!

They got my guy in Alaska lol
This is a joke! Come on Memphis challenge this ALL the way.
I see the smurk grin Jay Bilas got on his face. Duke alum
Wow. Gonna be interesting
I'm with Chase Young in his situation. Young got a loan from a family friend to fly his girl to the Rose Bowl, and repaid it. Damage repaired. But I'm with the NCAA on the Memphis situation. The notion that a coach, who, as a booster, previously donated to the institution, becomes coach and then blatantly violates the rules by financially helps a player out, then plays him, anyway, will set a bad precedent on a lot of levels.
If I'm 19 and the only way to support my family is to go hoop for a certain school... Isn't this what I practiced my whole life for ..
FACT: The last thing that the NCAA would want, is for James W to GO ELSEWHERE, like the NBL, as it would mean that 3 of the top 10 prospects in the 2020 draft didn't go the TRADITIONAL ROUTE. lOOK FOR THEM TO EVENTUALLY ALLOW HIM TO CONTINUE TO PLAY, PROVIDED THE MONEY IS PAID BACK.
Memphis vs everybody
Memphis got an all black team mainly local kids given a shot on national spotlight and the NCAA talking about something that happened when he was nine and then something that happened when he was in high school
This is anything but a garden-variety case. Bilas is no fan of Memphis or penny. Got to keep the top four the same blue bloods is always. This is a unique case that has not come up before. I'm not sure where Phyllis gets off on saying it's just a garden-variety case
Can someone please explain im trying to understand this situation
In 2017 Penny Hardaway the Memphis coach helped James and his family move houses by paying for some of it. I’m guessing the NCAA is using this as this could be a reason James Wiseman went to Memphis
To clarify what Herb said...in 2017, before James Wiseman was even a Junior in High School, High School coach Penny paid for some of the moving expenses. Tubby Smith, the Memphis coach was fired over a year later. Before James Wiseman's senior year in High School, Penny became the coach at Memphis...which swung Wiseman from Kentucky to Memphis.
The issue is that back in 2008, Penny donated $1 mil to the University of Memphis , which makes him a booster for life in the eyes of the NCAA. If Penny never donated the money, this wouldn't be an issue. Shouldn't be an issue anyways...
PDemi Thanks for clarifying even more , Hope you have a good day
@@PDemi But it should be an issue. Penny paid to have the kid folllow him to another school 3-4 hours away. If Penny had any thoughts of becoming a college coach (and you know he did) then he knew this was a risky move. He did it because this is a special player and Penny saw that. Im sure there are many other kids that would have liked to make that move to Memphis also, but Penny only took him because he is a special talent.
This is the reason why kids go over seas and play. Later on gets drafted by the league it may be a longer wait. But it will be worth it
The rules may be unjust. But they are in place and Memphis is being foolish. They have two options. One would be -- or would have been -- to suspend the player, apply for reinstatement and accept the nine-game suspension that is standard in such matters. Wiseman is back in time for most or all of the conference season. They start winning again and make the NCAA tournament. The option they appear to have taken is to defy the NCAA and risk being banished from the tournament. Doesn't it make more sense -- and isn't it more fair to the entire team, not just Wiseman -- to take the punishment, drop the posturing and pursue a national title?
this would not be happening if penny wasnt the coach
Its time to let teams go by NCAA rules or not. If they dont, they play any team and accept a NCAA loss...but if several teams decide to band together they will get the best talent and make money putting on a semi-pro show. California already ruled that the major teams there can pay to play. You have big time college programs that are nearly done with the NCAA. They will play each other and whatever team agrees to play them. Its gonna be a forfeit and we'll see if the NIT makes some changes to gain back the prestige. College football should not do this. Only the mens college basketball has the feel and eye test of semi-pro.
The key issue is that the NCAA, the billion dollar organization, loves being petty and picking on people almost ultimately ruining some of these kids dreams
They broke the rules idk why ppl are mad at the ncaa
They won't win a championship without him so this is a no brainer. But this is stupid. We have all these rules and bylaws in all facets of life. We need order but at some point we need use the common sense theory.
This is so stupid. I can’t believe that this is an issue. Last I checked it was for like Penny Hardaway helping him move to Memphis. and like giving him some money.
EDIT: By the way I have a video about this over on my channel if you guys would check it out I would really appreciate it!
The guy in background wearing a dude perfect hat 🤣
Memphis will be banned from the NCAA tournament
NCAA said “ may “
The NCAA is so lame. Every coach in college basketball have given something to the school at some point. They're just hating on Memphis💯
Penny Hardaway gives 0 f--ks and I like that.
I played against Wisemen in high school...literally sold out games and the NCAA will lose money if he doesn’t play.
Why is the NCAA making so many rules.
Didn’t WOJ say this happened in 2008 which made the kid 7 or 8 years old in which penny hardway wasn’t the coach and was helping somebody ...still even if he helped them way before coaching consideration why are they being punished
He got it wrong, in 2008 Penny donated a mill to Memphis after he retired. In their eyes that makes him a booster. 9 years later Wiseman transfered from Nashville to Memphis to play for Penny at East. That's when the other money comes into play, he gave Wiseman's family 11 grand to move...then 9 months later Tubby gets fired, Penny becomes the coach and Wiseman ends up at Memphis. There's no way Wiseman ends up at Memphis if Tubby is still there but there's also no way of Penny knowing in 2008 that he'd be the head coach of his Alma mater.
@@slimwon exactly!

Similar thing happened with DeSousa at Kansas and he won his appeal. I bet Wiseman can too.
The thing is Penny wasn’t the coach of Memphis when this happened he was the coach of his High School team in Memphis

Why was he ineligible to play?
Penny moved Wiseman family to Memphis a year before Penny took the head coaching job at Memphis. Penny Hardaway also donated money in 2008 to Memphis making him technically a booster.
Wiseman didn’t take the money.. his family did.. not his fault
He broke the rule he should have to pay the consequences like those before him ion see the big deal he not the first to take money he won’t be the last so just take to suspension like a man then ball out come tournament time
Yes the NCAA messed up, but so did Memphis with this dumb move of letting him play, why? Cause if they give in they can start the process of trying to figure out if he is completely ineligible or just suspended, but just to play him until they get to court, for what when this was clearly a violation of the rules. I know yall harping about how messed up the NCAA is but people break the rules all the time, and some dont get caught with these stupid rules they have to follow but they chose to play in this god forsaken league.
punish the adults not the kid
The kids shouldn’t be punished. The adults and the school should be penalized. So the school and coach still participate but the kid is punished. The NBA needs to take players like him to the g-league and ruin ncaa basketball until the figure out a solution that rewards coaches and school but punishes the kids.
NCAA be like 🚫💯
1 player
The rest of the team punished in order to let him play.... i wonder whose their favorite
That's not what it's about. Its about keeping your word to your players and standing up for them. It shows you by their sides and it shows the next recruits you got their back too. And the punishment u talking about is kinda irrelevant because who's to say they even get to the tournament without wiseman
The players were asked if they were ok with him playing given the risks. NONE of them voted no. They are all in this together.

MrSpliffstarz Uh if James was 8 in 2017 how is he playing CBB in 2019?🤦🏽♂️😂
@MrSpliffstarz huh? Noooo, Penny gave $$ to U of M in 2008 so he is considered a booster for life. Yes, Wiseman was 8 at the time but that has nothing to do with the donation. In 2017, Penny gave Wiseman's family the $$ to move to Memphis to be by his sister that was going to Memphis. Penny was not the Memphjs coach at the time, but was the East high school coach where Wiseman went. They are saying bc Penny was technically a Booster, giving Wiseman's family that $$ to move, was a violation.
@@xtravert2012 He also has given Alex Lomax who is on the team money, even moved him in with him. The NCAA said not a word.

Yes, the NCAA is corrupt, but a rule is a rule. Penny paid to have a player follow him to another high school (because Penny knew he was a special player).
