Season 3 overlapped with him being the host of The Daily Show while Stewart was away. The new showrunners of Season 4 didn't want him back. He was asked to come back to fill the void left by Glover leaving in Season 5. But he started Last Week Tonight while Season 6 was in production.
It's probably my favorite line in the show. And it only came about because they forgot to get a shot of his shoe actually untied. A mistake led to such brilliance haha

I genuinely love how in s2e5 he turned on a lot of stupid videos and no one even questioned it. And then in the end of the episode Britta asked him if he decided to stop pretending to know a subject and he easily said yes. I love this guy!
