Good review mate. Having recently decided to add a big bike to the stable for longer trips I purchased a 2018 1090 r. It has less power (125hp) and tech and a bit less weight at 207 dry than the 1290r.Coming from enduro and dual sport bikes it really has surprised me just how capable these big pigs are. 125hp is nothing to sneeze at 😎 And I agree, I was surprised what my T7 was able to get through when I moved over to that from my 500 EXC. Thanks for the comment 🤙
Hey Josh. You should check out the Fuel Dongles ABS switch for the T7. It shuts off the rear ABS and you can turn it on and off on the fly. Just picked one up and looking forward to seeing how it works this season.
@@MVDBR I like having all the ABS off as well, but I’m going to try it out this year…when our snow melts that is. At least I’ll be able to switch off the rear on the fly if I forget and get into something that I need to drag the rear on.
Nice one one mate. Should have played with Throttle in rally mode instead of street and slip control instead of leaving it in 6. Super fun on fire roads for power-slides

Just cruising josh , whats comfort like compared to the t7 ?? Id rather ride my t7 then my mates 790 when just cruising . Ya said it was comfy but how comfy mate ?
Yeah so I'm the same, from what I remember when I had a short ride on a 790 I remember thinking hey, at least the T7 is more comfy than this. But yeah the 1290 is better again, less vibes than the Tenere, better seat and very comfortable for cruising. Andy's got it set up real nice 👌
I ride with a guy that has a 1290 that is lowered some. He has a 28 inch or 71cm leg inseam. He says its not too bad to pick up. I don't see how that is. My 890 adv standard feels heavy to lift and it doesn't lay flat due to the tanks. I don't think I would be able to lift a 1290. I did ride it on a dirt road and it was fun and agile. My inseam is 76 cm. We are both short around 170cm tall.
Yeah I would definitely want it lowered a little if I owned one of these, and the dead weight is something to experience. I guess it would have been easier on a harder flatter surface to pick up, but not by that much 😬
Owned same bike for 14 mths.Fantastic bike but generally too big and to much plastic shrouds to get off especially if you drop in a water crossing. Also damn heavy when on its side(I know im much older now and not fit but.)Got rid of it.Cheers.
I remember years ago dropping my ancient XTZ750 and I nearly pulled a hamstring getting it up. I cannot imagine hauling any of the current crop of mega ADVs up off the dirt!
That's whole lot of bike. I get what you're saying about riding modes etc, some people can't live without that stuff anymore but it's not for me either. The new Ducati supermoto enables people to wheelie and slide the rear under braking completely controlled by electronics, which is fine but are we creating a generation of riders who appear better than they are? To me it's like every fuggin kid now has their face in a tablet or phone where we used to send it over jumps on bicycles and get up to all sorts of shenanigans. But what would I know? I went from EFI to a flat slide carby and grin like an idiot riding.
Yeah wheelie control, what could possibly go wrong... till the muppet jumps on a bike that doesn't have it, expecting it to be there 😬 I do like me EFI though hehe
Gotta say that my old 1290 ABS stayed in Offroad mode but I would flick the traction control on when I got back onto the blacktop just because I know I can control the throttle but I struggled to control the devil on my shoulder that told me to wheelie every time somebody looked at me😂 I’m also so glad you got the full experience, mainly just getting to pick her up once😂😂
the level of rear wheel slip the traction control allows, goes from 1 through 9 where 1 is almost no tc and 9 wont let the bike go anywhere in mud. Great stuff really because with all that power its almost impossible to control slip with the throttle.
slip control to control wheel spin (power slide...etc). Needs to be set to zero for sand (old down for 2 seconds on the fly boom 0 then click up to go back to whatever the setting was)
I thought cause most of those Akrapovic end cans are around A$1200 this would be the same, had a quick look before I took it back and more like $2500! So yeah very lucky Andy is a mad cnt 💪
Amigo qué mala manera de conducir la moto. Me refiero a qué vas muy despacio y la tres en tercera, cuarta y quinta a muy baja velocidad y maltratar de esa manera el motor le vas a generar un dańo grave. Saludos
In the middle you spend about 2 minutes talking about how rider modes aren't for you and all that rhetoric about how 100 modes and traction control aren't needed and the best traction control is you, then the very next clip "this rally mode is good, very easy for a muppet like me to ride above his pay grade"... Give the ride modes an honest rhetoric free review. Maybe they're sht maybe not, but you gotta review what you're on and not what you believe going in.
Thankfully I remembered to make the "I'm not a professional motorcycle reviewer" disclaimer at the beginning of the video aye 😬 Thanks for the tip. If it helps, what I meant to say was... this bike (power) is awesome, not the rally mode specifically 👍
Fair enough, playing with the rally settings is where it shines. I think you rode mostly in 6. I found anything above 4 for low speed was annoying. When ripping Sandy roads in higher gears I like keeping the setting around 5 or 6. But lower speed 1st/2nd gear trails I'll run it down to 1 or 2. Using the +/- left hand buttons to tune it instantly. In 2 the slip is consistent and measurable enough to spin the back tire while climbing long sand hills but not fly out of control. I've only had 2 months to play with it, before it snowed, but I feel like there's definitely a lot of potential with rally above offroad mode with the msc off... If you get a chance to ride it again I'd recommend moving the rally setting down and then back up! You still might absolutely hate it, but it's meant to allow the rider instant tuning control.
Nice review! Been meaning to get you on the Tiger 1200 Josh, now you'll have something to compare against! Spoiler alert: the KTM will be better off road haha

Not making a 701LR Adventure was a huge mistake for example. With more chassis development, the 690 701 could be an epic adventure bike instead of heavy 790 890…

Wicked trip mate, awesome bike. I would prob kill myself with that much power! LOL. I am pretty impressed how quiet it is as well!
Cheers man, least you'd die with a smile on ya dial 😁
I guess it would have been easier on a harder flatter surface to pick up, but not by that much 😬
8:55 josh you no what I'm gonna say ,ye the powers nice but try and pick it up of the floor when you've done 150 to 300 km track and your tired .👋🤠👍
I know mate, I did 🙈
@@MVDBR I've ordered a cranns disclock , th VD 14 ,I didn't no they were Bluetooth tho couldn't remember you saying 👋🤠👍
@@MVDBR guy seemed ok with you dropping it ,or he'll probably sneak up on your tent one night lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Transalp next?
Haha could do mate I'm a bit gunshy after damaging that Akro though 😬
Good review
Cheers 🤘
Josh?. I thought your name was MVDBKTM690 sick kent.
Josh is easier to say 😎
What are you running for gps mount?
Not sure soz, not my bike 🤘
What is that device, just up above the meter Console?
The GPS? I think it's a Garmin Zumo XT
Owned same bike for 14 mths.Fantastic bike but generally too big and to much plastic shrouds to get off especially if you drop in a water crossing. Also damn heavy when on its side(I know im much older now and not fit but.)Got rid of it.Cheers.
Yeah mate these big units are good for the easy stuff but too much in the rough unless you're Birchie. Cheers B 🍻
I remember years ago dropping my ancient XTZ750 and I nearly pulled a hamstring getting it up. I cannot imagine hauling any of the current crop of mega ADVs up off the dirt!
@@keyboarddancers7751 it's no cakewalk!
Maybe just a little hop😅
Gotta say that my old 1290 ABS stayed in Offroad mode but I would flick the traction control on when I got back onto the blacktop just because I know I can control the throttle but I struggled to control the devil on my shoulder that told me to wheelie every time somebody looked at me😂
I’m also so glad you got the full experience, mainly just getting to pick her up once😂😂
😅 that sure was an experience haha cheers mate
the bike must be in neutral for the hill start to escape
Ahhh ok thanks 🤙
Did you buy a new pipe
Nah Andy was chill, thank fuck. I would have though
27:29 oops 34:22
Wtf is that huge 6 on the left side of the dash?
the level of rear wheel slip the traction control allows, goes from 1 through 9 where 1 is almost no tc and 9 wont let the bike go anywhere in mud. Great stuff really because with all that power its almost impossible to control slip with the throttle.
slip control to control wheel spin (power slide...etc). Needs to be set to zero for sand (old down for 2 seconds on the fly boom 0 then click up to go back to whatever the setting was)
Yeah Andy did explain about the slip control but I didn't really get a chance to play around with it 👍
Andy is a good dude cause carbon + Akra fucked...not cool ! but shit happens...
I thought cause most of those Akrapovic end cans are around A$1200 this would be the same, had a quick look before I took it back and more like $2500! So yeah very lucky Andy is a mad cnt 💪
@@MVDBR At least the bike saw some real off-road with you after 20,000km 😉

What th3 t7 is almost as heavy 😂
40kg is a substantial difference in my opinion 😎
@@MVDBRyou have to look past the number and consider how nimble the bike is. The T7 is very top heavy and does not handle nearly as well.
Amigo qué mala manera de conducir la moto. Me refiero a qué vas muy despacio y la tres en tercera, cuarta y quinta a muy baja velocidad y maltratar de esa manera el motor le vas a generar un dańo grave. Saludos
😅 ok mate
Maybe because of the rpm? You get lower grunt when on higher gear with low rpm
Jeeeeesus
Nice review! Been meaning to get you on the Tiger 1200 Josh, now you'll have something to compare against! Spoiler alert: the KTM will be better off road haha
Wow, I'd be honoured mate. But you saw the damage I did right? Don't let me near expensive bikes! 🙈
