- A homeless man gets to stay at a five-star hotel.
THE TRACK is used with permission from Louisa Connolly-Burnham. Learn more at trackfilms.co.uk.
Grace is a volunteer at The Track, a day shelter for rough sleepers in London. When the shelter receives a donation in the form of a night's stay at a five-star hotel, they give it to Nate, a former teacher and immigrant who has fallen through the cracks, and it becomes Grace's job to bring him to the hotel and get him settled for the evening.
But when Grace and Nate head to the hotel, they have a hard time checking him in, claiming that the names don't match exactly on the reservation. When Grace later finds Nate sleeping on the street in the brutal cold, she invites him to stay at her boyfriend's home, only to discover that her efforts might have been for naught in the morning.
Directed by Louisa Connolly Burnham from a script written by Augusta Woods, who also plays the pivotal role of Grace, this powerful short drama confronts the harsh realities of people who are homeless in a direct, visceral way, tracing how one moment of prejudice and judgment against them has far-reaching, devastating implications.
Grace is an observer, and through her eyes, the sensitive, documentary-like storytelling captures the small but telling moments and details of the day shelter where she works. Some of the rough sleepers are mentally ill; others seem lonely and isolated. Together, they make up a microcosm of the "have-nots" of society. Nate, however, stands out for his intelligence, kindness, leadership and lucidity, and the shelter decides to give him the donation of an unused night's stay at a five-star hotel, figuring he would not take advantage of it.
The writing has a keen eye for the pointed ways that prejudice peeks out from underneath the polite veneer of social interaction, which comes out especially when Grace goes with Nate to check him in, only to be confronted with an intransigent receptionist who refuses to admit Nate, citing a technicality that the names on the reservation don't match up. When Grace angrily calls out the receptionist, we also see the pain that Nate experiences as the prejudice against him is brought out in the open. Actor Wil Johnson plays Nate with innate decency and groundedness, and we understand what it means -- and what it costs him -- to extricate himself from the situation with calm and dignity.
Grace, too, goes on her way, meeting up with a friend. But on her way home, she discovers Nate sleeping on the street and deathly cold. Breaking protocol to help Nate in any way she can, she arranges for him to stay the night at her boyfriend's home, but in the morning, she discovers the cost of a night of sleeping on the street in the winter cold. Based on a true story, THE TRACK ends with a devastating conclusion, pulling no punches with its moral outrage and its reminder that those without homes are still people, with stories and names -- and like any other human being, deserve dignity and respect, no matter what the circumstance.
She mentions something good in this. There are empty rooms everywhere and homeless individuals to fill them. Just as there is government funds just sitting around but not helping the ones that need a second chance or boost in morale. The help is there but we choose not to give it.
actually they give it to illegals and tell americans its trumps fault there isnt enough. true story.
AFUCKINGMEN DUDE! I hear ya.
Spot on!
Homelessness is not just a a condition, it is 99% the result of a process. Unless some root problems are addressed differently, people like Nate in this film, will still die despite resting on a sofa in a warm room.
People are responsible for the position of their lives and others should not be forced to carry the weight of bad decisions.
You could see it in Nate's eyes while he was standing in the apartment, that blank stare while thinking at a 1,000 miles per hour, Nate had had enough of the cruelty of life. I knew Nate would not make it through the night. It was a very good short story and Omeleto short film. Nate had so much to give, but few in this world would notice his giving kindness.
It was really sad that it was too late for him, i wonder if he had a job interview... or whether he just told her that . He seemed kind and had alot to give like you say.
That's something we need in this world, more people like Grace and Nate
We all need to be Grace and Nate ourselves!
They are there but governments suppress them, that's why we do maandamano
I loved how there was a tv show about critiquing houses in the background. Great film, great message, great actors.
yes, homes under the hammer where people buy cheap at auction to get the highest possible rental price and the show celebrates this capitalist cancer in u.k. society following the Tory sell off of the council Housing stock.
This touches me personally because my dad and I have been homeless more than once in my life, as young as 10. Actually at that time the two of us were living out of our car but he told me we were on an extended camping trip. It wasn't until I was older that I realized the label he was trying to protect me from.
RIP Dad 🕊️
damn
@tirzeh That's love. Trying to protect his daughter from the stigma of society. ❤❤❤
@@demijour1234 Thank you, that means a lot to me. 🕊️
Good parents are like that, like my dad not telling me what was happening before he passed, but I knew, because I was in the room with him when he was taking to or about someone not there, Its like my mom now, she is forgetting things here and there and it hurts, because I know at some point she will be gone and I will be alone.
Aww, this breaks my heart! Hope ur doing well now. ❤❤❤
I would have made it my mission to make sure that receptionist knew everyday that Nate died. EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Apparently this is based on a true story. I'd love to know which hotel turned him away.
There is so much to absorb in this film. Brilliantly conceived with a message that will stay with the viewer for a long time. Films like this get people to take action and not stand on the sidelines.
We can only hope that this short film will touch the people who can actually make a difference. So many of us are barely scraping by and are one paycheck away from being homeless ourselves. So many politicians could make a difference; some try but their efforts get lost in the red tape or all of the negativity and bureaucracy of trying to make a positive difference. It's so sad and I fear that it's only going to get worse as time goes on.
Makes you realise how lucky we are, although we may complain about life treating us unfairly, we need to stop and think. Thank you for sharing this.
You make it seem homeless people have no internet access and won't be able to read your comments
@@johnadams1600 how do you know what homeless people want? They want to be entertain to.😮
Thank God.
So true 😢
Just because we aren’t homeless doesn’t mean we aren’t suffering. Life does treat us unfairly. Just because some have it worse than others doesn’t mean our suffering doesn’t count.
The worst part was the receptionist knew the names didn't match from the beginning and she still went through the whole facade, it would have been less horrible if she had said no from the beginning
The names matched she just didn't want to let a homeless person in, she was hoping he wouldn't have a passport so she could use that excuse........
@@EZ-D-FIANT the name from the woman who booked the room and his name didn't match each other, but yes I know it was an excuse because he was homeless that was definitely obvious
@@resolecca I don't agree, she said the name had been changed straight away, she clearly found the name on the system (hoping she wouldn't) and then tried thr passport excuse, when that didn't work she just said "the details don't match" yes but I don't think that was true, it was just her saying nontoxic him being homeless. Think about it, if itnwas simply because the names were not the same then not letting him in would be fair enough and it would totally take from the meaning of the short, nah the names matched she just didn't want to let him in and was searching for excuses when none were possible she just said no and blamed policy!
@@resolecca It would have been nice if the receptionist turned a blind eye to policy and actually showed sympathy and sneaked the guy in the room. But those hotels especially 5 star ones are far too snobby.
@@gemstar7286 I agree
Wow, just goes to show that people do not want to deal with homeless issues.
Well done.
It's not the receptionists job though. There are plenty of programs out there. It's just her job to look at a computer and verify information.
@@mms4520 I agree, this video showcased a larger problem.
It broke my heart...He is more honorable and decent than the majority of rich ppl. Screw appearances that turned us into judgmental, shallow, and greedy monsters....
Well done. This made me cry. I’ll never understand why anyone should be homeless in this world. And to die from not having a roof over one’s head is unforgivable!
It's part of the capitalist system - if people are terrified of losing their homes, they work harder, accept lower wages and worse conditions, don't complain, don't join unions, etc.
Same here...
At least in the end, he was surrounded by love from the kind couple.
It's absolutely brilliant. Not overly sentimental but hits home hard. This isn't just about homeless people, it's about anyone different from the "norm". We need to educate our children to act wisely but with an open heart. If this were true, I'd hope thst Grace went back to that hotel and explained the consequences of their actions. Nate's acceptance and resignation, accepting so little of other people broke my heart.
So very sad, such a kind man and such a loss to the world. I wanted them to get help when he arrived at the girl's flat and there was clearly something wrong. i didn't understand why they just left him as he was in such a state.
Agreed!
Just thinking the same thing...😢
It's so sad... But sader still that many would complain if they saw someone homeless staying in their expensive hotel. So it's bigger than the unkindness of a receptionist. Thank you. This made me think 🙏
He did not look homeless to me. He looked working class. I guess we are next after they finish destroying the middle class.
How many homeless have you sheltered? It's easy to always expect others to do the dirty job.
Wow, I'm glad I didn't read the description all the way or read the comments first. This was truly well done. If everyone in the world, every day, would do one kind act. Think of that world. :)
Thanks for sharing Nate's story. I'm crying like a baby.. RIP, u mattered!😢
Powerfully disturbing, it hurts to be confronted with the harsh reality we try to ignore because of our helpless feelings of powerlessness. Perspective has been lost, all is profit & gain, life has been cheapened by materialism, we live in a society where shallowness & greed is the acceptable norm, while desperate need is everywhere.
Greedy financial policy is the multi faceted
conglomerational beating heart of our world, where once we had a sympathetic global conciousness & a one connected humane soul.
Its down to each & every one of us to be aware, to care...to fight the apathy and the decline of love in our human species. As the animals rise in conciousness we humand are degrading .
The animals were always conscious, weren’t they?
When or where did we have a sympathetic global consciouness and one connected human soul?
@@walkingman8943 Oh Yes indeed, but
truly if you pay some close attention across the board , everything from the tiniest Bees, to Dogs & Goats
What a great actress! She captured the persona just perfect
Always escalate the matter up to senior management. The receptionist is not the final decision maker.
Right. This whole film is so ridiculous. One exaggeration after another.
@@mms4520 have you spent much time trying to help the needy?
@@bjb7587 Everyday. It's my job. And I live in the inner city where transients are everywhere. I give to them everyday.
Have YOU spent much time trying to help the "needy?" Because "needy" means drug addicted, criminal, abusive, and entitled. It's not all a sob story.
Thank you so much, I would have never accepted “no” as a final answer - he would have gotten the room with extras!!! 🤬
Or at least make sure the person who donated the room knows
The lady could've checked herself in on his behalf then let him sleep in the room. That would've been so much easier.
You show the broken kindness and they break even moreee 😩💔
This will be the final hour for many people. The film was very powerful!
I saw a woman and her young son living in a storage room at a self-storage facility. I happened to walk past her room when she had the door open and her son was laying on a neatly made bed in his pajamas playing with an Ipad. That was about 3 years ago but I always think about it.
The iPad was probably the mother's one. She bought it when she wasn't homeless and then needed it to look for a job or a flat. Her son being bored was playing with it. Don't judge a book by its cover.
@@tobe-you-tube6612 Did you miss the part that this mother and son were living in a storage facility?
It’s nice she was making the most of what she had, making it a safe place, a home. I hope she has a proper home now
@@tobe-you-tube6612 Wait, what? Who was judging? I was simply sharing an experience. Are you looking for a fight?
We cannot justify not having compassion x our fellow man. As someone who always had 2 or 3 jobs I took it upon myself to help family and friends. Paid my brother mortgage x 3 years. He always worked 2 shifts to take care of his wife and 2 autistic kids. They would close the place of work every 3 months to avoid giving benefits to employees. Everyone had to reapply. The last time he kept messing up his work area. He happened to have early vascular dementia. Never took care of himself. If family and friends do not support one another people will continue to loose their homes and dignity.
You're a lovely sister ❤️
Well written and acted, sad story, poor guy 😢
Discrimination and prejudice; the sad realities of life
More like a lack of proper planning. This isn't how it works in reality.
Prejudice is overrated. And discrimination in today's Western societies is against men and the white majority. Deal with it.
One of the problems is that people don't see the Nate's in the world. They see the meth addicts and the people dealing with mental illnesses. Its harder to have compassion for people you are afraid of. :(
So true
Her walking by herself and wearing headphones during nighttime... definitely not safe.
Was the room not refundable? Couldn't she have donated the funds to the shelter and they could have sponsored several rooms at a regular hotel for the price of one 5 star room.
Exactly what I was wondering. Get that refund!!
Not the point of the video.
I very much doubt she could get a refund for one day of a few on the day after the rest have been used, maybe for a booking that was still in a few weeks but not for this....

Before taking care of
everybody else that would
like to come to your country?
Take care of your own poor, indigent and homeless first.

The acting was excellent.
By the way,
the homeless are
far more resourceful
on how to stay warm
on a cold night.
This does bring to light
the plight of those who
are homeless
and possibly
60-plus years of age.

This makes me cherish my friendships with my transient friends just that much more. They just want to be treated like humans.
Shame he never arrived on a dinghy. He would have had his own room in a 4 star hotel, three square meals a day, plus spending money....
Poor Nate/Nathaniel. I am speechless.
Sad ending 😢.
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I’m in tears over how impactful and thought provoking this is. Thank you for this masterpiece
I have led a blessed life. I have never known homelessness, hunger, where my next shower will come from. I can't imagine that... life.
It’s not enjoyable. A blessing to make it through.
One can't help but think of all the ways by which the wealth of the wealthy rewards them, while good people born under less-than-ideal conditions, people who've perhaps met with bad luck too often and despite it all, endure every missile slung and and arrow launched in their direction, many of which may pierce them more deeply that many of us can even imagine, have beating within their chests hearts that overflow with love and compassion for others. And these good, but unfortunate people might be denied a simple luxury on the grounds that they bear the marks of their ill fortune too overtly. One can't help but see those scenarios playing out all around day after day and be left feeling that while in somewhat good company, one really is all too often beating ones heart against some mad bugger's wall.
Yep, love me some Floyd. And although it hurt to watch it, I really loved me this here little movie, too. My gratitude to its makers as well, as to OMELETO for posting it for us all to see.

Why your videos keep making me cry?
Having an affordable roof over your head is a human right under the international human rights law. All human rights laws have been reduced down to a mere suggestion and guidelines to benefit the few at the top financially. This world has monetised everything into a commodity, including the basic fundamental necessities of life. The 1% own almost half the world’s wealth while the 99% becomes poorer. This inequality because of a corrupted economic system is unsustainable. The collapse of this empire internally and externally is inevitable. When people become desperate to survive in a life and death situation they will do what ever it takes to survive. And this can be taken as a warning. The global economic system needs to be balanced to create equality for all. Because if it doesn’t it will collapse into chaos, taking all of humanity with it.
I would probably go Postal on the receptionist.
Heartbreaking 😢
Will Johnson= Nate= Vaemond Velaryon (House of The Dragon).
Even though I have a home I have constant dreams where I don't. During these dreams someone offers me a temporary place that is nothing more than an unheated shed. I gratefully accept and it seems like a palace. It does make me consider if there are actually previous lives.
Great job cast and crew. Rejection is a w.m.d. He was fine until that moment of Rejection. So casual is the shadow of despair.

Excellent film
So touching!
This is very disturbing aswell as heartbreaking. It's really upsetting to see so many of our own homeless people in desperate need of food warmth & shelter & there are empty beds rooms available yet no one wants to help these poor people yet if it's a illegal immigrant they immediately get that room. It's about time this country starts putting it's own people first instead of wasting tax payers money on those who quite frankly don't deserve it. Besides all these immigrants do is piss & moan akways finding faults unhappy with the food whereas if it was our own people they'd be ever so grateful. That's the vast difference between helping those that are in desperate need compared to those that are plain ungrateful. Really steams my piss tbh
The song at the end is so haunting… anyone know who sings it?

Wil Johnson did a beautiful job as Nate.
My friend was homeless in Colorado for a little while and met another homeless guy. Later he found out the guy froze to death one night....
The inclusion of "homes under the hammer" on the TV is significant because the trend of people buying and profiting from portfolios of accommodations is a massive contribution to the housing crisis.
But also, I feel like it was a bit naïve to expect the hotel not to refuse the arrangement. That kind of stuff is usually discretionary.
This was very touching
OMFG! God give me the strength to help the homeless and the destitute!
You don't need god just do it.....
@@EZ-D-FIANT Agreed. It's like asking for the strength to do it. Sometimes we know what to do but don't do it for unknown reasons. A little push is always needed.
This makes me angry and sad!
We’re talking about “1st World” countries where this is happening, which makes it all the more egregious. We are so blessed and take the things that have become our “norms” for granted but the truth is there are so many without these privileges suffering every day. So sad but good short story.❤

She checks-in, he meets her 10min later, she leaves, and voila. No movie then....
I thought he eventually was going to get the room and it would show how he thoroughly enjoys the accomodations and then there's some interaction somewhere that leaves us all happy and enlightened.
But she can’t check in as a the reservation isn’t under her name either?
Most people have become too selfish to help others!
I am surprised that the homeless man died...the people at that racist hotel should be held responsible.
Where is this woman whose name used under the reservation? Call her to confirm the booking
This is in essence a simplistic story that pushes some emotional buttons. It is not wrong in reminding us to be kind to the poor and unfortunate, no matter their race, but naïve in its messaging. No, it's not just that rich people are unsympathetic and greedy. There are lots of aspects that perpetuate homelessness, including excessive welfare systems with little accountability for where the money goes, a lack of coordination between different institutions and a prioritization of importing and spending massive resources on housing and otherwise supporting migrants into one's country. Then, it doesn't help to show Nate, who looked to be in good health and in possession of good clothes and a sleeping bag, shivering on the street with teeth clattering and then dying in a warm apartment the same night, apparently from the cold as we're led to believe. That's not realistic. It is fabricated to reinforce the simplistic point of there being heartless people whose callousness kills poor innocent victims who, by the way, are much kinder and morally superior to them. Why don't directors first try to get somewhat of a grip on their subject matter before making another useless film?
Thanks, not.
