As phase 3 of New Zealand's Omicron response begins, more people will be expected to use a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) to see if they have Covid-19.
Using a RAT involves swabbing your own nose, swishing your swab inside a solution and dropping the liquid onto a testing tray to get the result.
Dr Api Talemaitoga of Cavendish Doctors explains how quick, easy and painless the process is.

More on NZ's Omicron Phase 3 and RATs...
Supervised RATs at general practitioners and other testing stations will become the main form of testing across New Zealand in Omicron Phase 3. These only take 15 minutes - rather than the several days that some lab-based testing is now taking.
The Government expects the public will be able to purchase their own RATs wherever they want from March, at around $8-$10 each. Supervised RATs for those who are contacts or symptomatic will still be free.

Simple and straightforward explanation.
@@TheAstroflight oh go on let him cook
Wish I had watched this first, I jammed it up into my brain and circled around up there
The nurses at work were jamming them up there like the pcr test.
Lmao, same 😆
Me too then dumped the four drops in the wrong place 🤪
That is funny asf
My eyes were crying with how far up I put mine
Ahhh....Soft end first. Glad he cleared that up.....
thank you, easier than trying to follow complicated written instructions :)
thanks, well demonstrated, can take the grandkids to school tomorrow without worries
Great instructions. Thank you very much. Nice and easy! Thank you Dr Talemaitoga.
This Doctor has such a calming voice 😊
Thanks so much! Absolute killer headache and eye pain which I never get tonight , luckily just the one line. I guess I'll eventually get it though
Thank you
Really helpful
thanx for that Dr Api , you have a very nice voice. Thanx for the video !
Could listen to him read the dictionary
You need to squeeze the vial onto the swab head as you turn the swab. To get viral particles off. Key step
The instructions in the boxes of the Orient Gene brand ones say just to press around the edge, but I got a different brand from my work that said to squeeze the vial onto the swab head like you and this video says.
True. It’s not so clear in the instructions
Hmm I didn't squeeze the swab. And I feel like crap. I'll do the test again tomorrow
Thank you so much
Thank you to the wonderful Dr Talemaitoga
Watched the video for the GP's soothing voice
Clear explanation.
Literally had to look this up on my break at work to see if I'm positive. Shots for the info
Mine has a holder for the dropper and says not to remove it until you put the stopper in so i can't do the squeezing it thing without ignoring instructions mine says to keep the swab in the solution for one minute.
Brilliant explanation, thanks
You must also wash your hands thoroughly before carrying out the test
Do you need to pee on it 🤣 That made my day hahaha
From what we have been told lately, this is the completely wrong way to do a RAT. It's what the instructions on the tests say, but we are being told now that we go in, almost horizontally to the cavity between soft pallete and nasal area - NOT up the nostril.
Told by who?
Who told you that? This is important.
@@Horus-Lupercal This is the same instruction I got @Aaron
My old Dr!!!
Well at least ya don't have to shove it all the way up ya nose👃🏽 my eyes will water 😂
Plot wwist: His result was positive
This information completely contradicts what the nurse at the testing station today told me.
There's totally different ones out there. You're one is the easiest then to what i was using 🙄 thanks anyway
I thought suppose to be like 2 cms in nostril
Why do the people at the testing stations stick it right up to your brain when you can just do little circles???
What’s on the swab
Nice
Thank you for this demonstration. I am having major problems with my right nostril after a VA worker jammed the swab up my nose. If I get cold air in the right side, I get a terrible headache for hours. I NEVER allow anyone else to swab me and have walked out of a couple facilities when not allowed to do it myself.
You can lodge an ACC Treatment Injury claim for that and should it properly checked out in case there has been nerve damage.
Doing one now as i have a random ass rash all over me... covid would be the best outcome as aunty googles telling me i got 3 other deathly diseases...
july 22 aww, hell I been doing it so wrong, thank you for this.
I just can't seem to pee into the sample window without getting it on my hands. But no worries I used some bbq tongs!
You don't swap the nostril...you have to go deeper, even the instruction says that...
I think it is the squeezing part (after you puts the swab into the solution) that sounds a bit complicated....
Yay thanks im too stupid to do it my self lol
Quick question. Do we put it right up our nose or just where he's putting it?
He is a doctor and is showing you the correct technique
The instructions of mine says put it up roughly 2.5cm in your nostril. But where he’s putting it isn’t 2.5cm
Had my first test yesterday thankfully it's a negative result....chur
This girl asked if the swap can be used for your throat 😂 Watchu trynna test, aye?
The nose and throat are connected at the back, so it's not a silly question. There are however more sensitive areas in your throat that you could maybe damage with a swab, so as the doc says, the nose is best.
Rip nose 😞
all this talk about RAT test but no one telling us where to get them. we should be able to get them at super markets or pharmacies
Work is providing ours, which is good
THEN DO WITHOUT THEM. If you feel ill, go to a doctor. Otherwise, try living NORMALLY!
Testing stations
If you need one go to your doctor or a testing station. It's not difficult.
And you will be able to get them from supermarkets, if not already.
Get them at Countdown Pharmacy.
the dude didn't give the times involved, ...After the nose twiddle, and the plonk in the solution, and swirl the swab,... then WAIT 1 minute, before squeezing out and removing the swab from the tube.....Then into the well,.... then WAIT 15 minutes..This is IMPORTANT! so Id ask the Ministry to re-film, and correct please. Cheers.
Cool story dave
Who searches up how to do something just to comment on it the correct way of doing it? You should make a tutorial video then 😂😂
He's doing it wrong and just rubbing the soft end against dry skin cells.
How do you know?
Are you a doctor or certified medical expert?
He’s a doctor and is showing you the correct technique. It is not a PCR test. It doesn’t need to go all the way up your nose
Okay Dr Michael Porter
I put it up my arse.
Why pee 😂😂
Some people probably are dumb enough to do that.
I put it up my arse.
I think cos the cardtridge looks a bit like a pregnancy test and works in a similar way (liquid goes on testing area then you wait to see one or two lines appear) and a lot of people don't have much experience with medical stuff. Plus they have been reporting on the news about water testing cities because some virus particles get passed in our pee, so I can understand why some may be confused. But the particles in pee can be from a recent infection, whereas the particles in our nose are from a current infection.
@@francisheperi4180 lol this is still funny
And that's how you waste a good r.a.test. The instructions says it all. When I took it, I followed the instructions. Had my head back a bit, enough to get that stick just above my pallette and just under my eyes, causing it to water (enough for a sneezing or uncomfortable sensation/feeling likeyou'vetoucheda nerve almost inside your 🧠🤯). Then, after doing both nose, twirling around for 15 one thousand darn long seconds, I Squeezed all that mucous stuff off the swab into the liquid in the small plastic container, and put the lid drop thingy on. Then eventually put 4/5 drops into the object (pregnancy) looking device..
15 minutes later....
🙌 done ✔hallelujah sneezing out loud, or uncomfortable eye water falls.
definitely ive had 4 different brands of tests now and all instructions are slightly different. How hes doing it is for kids under 12
A test wont cure you
You can't cure anything if you dont know what you have
Good thinking EyeSpy 👍
Well that's exactly why it's called a "Test" and not a cure.
For crying out loud - stop 'testing' yourselves like some kind of obsessive group of cult members!
If you don't feel ill, you're not ill. If you are ill, go to hospital. Stop this pathetic virtue-signalling and start living normally - remember ''normal''? If you don't want to, then YOU stay behind your sofa - the rest of us have lives to live.
lol stop
It's required by basically every work place so what are we supposed do?
"if you are ill, go to hospital"
That definitely does not sound like "living normally" 🤣🤣🤣
Ah well, I got my booster, good luck everyone who isn't vaccinated by choice.
You're a perfect example of how dumb & unprepared people can be. You do realize you can still have the virus and show no symptoms at all. Also, whats wrong with testing, better safe than sorry. And these things will only take a little bit of your time (Its super quick). It doesn't take a whole lot of time from your life lmao. I really don't understand people like you, either you are too lazy to take these easy steps or just dumb.
