So it should've been 1, 4, 7, 10. Also the post-credits scene with Earn getting white Earn's bag makes more sense if it was attached to this episode, cause it references the same themes of dual black and white identity this episode explores
People are saying the new blaccent and brushing his hair ( he'll never have waves) shows him embracing his black heritage. I think Donald Glover solidified Aaron's blackness or identity as a black man when he said " I've never been more attracted to you (white woman)" hahaha That warranted a freeze frame!
A little too realistic with how things are here in Atlanta. Aaron rejected who he was until he saw it benefited him. And frighteningly real with how his friends responded to the scholarship. You encounter a lot of people mad because they feel black scholarships are reverse racist, and even have politicians working hard at removing such programs and now even our history. In college I heard a lot of those comments about minority universities, programs etc. and regardless of how much you try to educate white people on why such programs are NEEDED they still don't like it.
How are they not racist?.. this is an honest question btw. I really want to understand how someone from that demographic would need such assistance. I view the issue as something more linked to poverty than to the color of someone’s skin. Btw I’m not white either. I come from a Hispanic family.
This episode had so many references to actual Atlanta, that was missed too. From White Grady (Grady is known as the hospital for poor black people), threatening Aaron with taking the MARTA, the public transportation line for the city, typically riddin by the working class black population; also Cobb County, one of the whitest counties petitioned not to have Marta built up to its County afraid it would bring more blacks into the area. Lithonia, where the Nigerian kid said he was from is a heavily black populated area of Georgia. Lastly, taking down the name of Stonewall Jackson, the confederate leader is reminiscent of Stone Mountain park. The side of the mountain has a carving of Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee (not S), and President of the confederate states, Jefferson Davis. For years, people have unsuccessfully petitioned to have the carving removed from the side of the mountain, but to this day it's still there showing its embarrassing confederate glory. Also, I believe Donald Glover is from the stone mountain area.
Yep! Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino is from Stone Mountain, GA. As a matter of fact, when my family and I visited Atlanta earlier this year, we passed some of the intersection exits that would lead us to Stone Mountain. I pointed out to my mom that that's where Gambino is from.
Thank u for breaking it down in a very fair way, I was the only one in my family in my age group who didn't go to an HBCU but I'm also from southern California an we didn't have the privilege of seeing this or hearing about "our schools" ..well we just wasn't aware how important HBCU schools were at that time because at that time between 96-98 Calif was super poppin, now that I'm older I wish I went but glad I didn't because this type of racism would've landed me in jail or killed because I go extra hard for my tribe an I fight back if I feel my kind is disrespected ✊🏽💯
The ending is funny, but a little bit disturbing at the same time. Aaron didn’t genuinely embrace his Blackness, he did it because of his circumstances. Had he gotten the scholarship he wanted, he would have continued to coast on the benefits of his caucasian appearance.
Exactly. Afrosurrealism at its finest.. this ain't no morality play.. it's sposed to disturb tf outa while making u think about the absurdity of reality.. in this case "our" reality
Is it not poetic justice that he didn't get the scholarship? Is it not poetic that by embracing his Blackness for the perks (we ALL embrace our privileges whatever they may be, don't front) he gets the consolation prize of the best lay of his life with his ex? And/or perhaps is it not even more poetic that his ex gets the best lay of her life due to Aaron embracing his blackness (hence the very last shot)?
I agree with what you’re saying but I don’t think it’s so black and white. Throughout the season we see everyone embracing their culture for their own benefit. Shaniqua benefits from hers with her restitution taxes and Liam Neeson embraces his when he tells Al how he doesn’t have to learn anything because of his white privilege. Everyone does it no matter what you say. Aaron may be only doing it now because of circumstances but I also think seeing a black man get shot by a cop with no hesitation may have made him realize some things. On top of the fact that he got sent to jail and probably has a very low chance of going to a college he wants. He may be using the other side of his culture for his own benefit now but he may also have a better understanding of this identity now given what he went through.
