  • This Chris Whitley Concert was videotaped at the Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado on July 12, 2001. Chris Whitley was the finest musician and songwriter of his time, may he rest in peace. Unfortunately Chris Whitley died of Lung Cancer in 2005 and he had no time to say goodbye. Nobody on this planet could get more music out of his national guitar, he nicknamed Mustard, than Chris Whitley. His encore performance and the last song on this video entitled "Shadowland" was brilliantly performed by Chris and I believe is arguably the finest live performance by any artist of his era. Two months after he performed "Shadowland" the twin towers came down and turned New York City into a "Shadowland." How prophetic was the song and the lyrics "Sacrifice of Civilization"

I had the privilege of meeting him and seeing him live at three concerts. I taped the concert at the Fox Theater and when I shook his hand I noticed the strength in his forearm from a lifetime of playing guitar and the time he spent working in a window factory In Brooklyn. He seemed to be rather shy and was never comfortable talking on stage....but when he played his guitar it was magic. He sounded like three musicians playing at one time, he could bring so much life from his National Guitar. He should be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame based on his incredible catalog of music. Kelly Joe Phelps is another musical genius that doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Didn't happen to me often but when I was completely overwhelmed when I learned that he died. I hoped to see him in concert that year. So much emotions in all his music. I still have tears coming… His daughter, Trixie, continues to hold the flame.

I was searching for this performance because I was actually at this show! I'll never forget him apologizing to the crowd for feeling tired from the tour. Then playing, "Can't Find My Way Home" I thought he had no reason to apologize. Music is a gift and he brought it. He also left us with Trixie whom I am enjoying discovering now.

You can really hear the destruction of his lung cancer when he talks as he introduces the band members. I'm shocked he could still sing. It's so upsetting that he died just as music was starting to change. I'd have loved to see him on the circuit with guys like Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, and Dylan Leblanc. Now where the hell is the Dust Radio documentary?!

I saw him in Seattle in late Sept. or early Oct. 2000. Could that have been the same tour?

The Rocket House album was released on June 5, 2001 and this performance in Boulder was was in July 2001. So it must have been another tour in October 2000 that you saw. I was lucky to see him perform live in three different concerts.

I’ve loved Chris since I saw him open for Tom Petty in Las Cruces, NM. Chris was promoting his recently released Living With the Law, and he was nothing less than brilliant🌟His voice almost literally sucks the air out of the room, and his guitar playing is so beautifully intricately bluesy. He was way better than Keith Richards et al could have ever dreamed of being. So totally heartbreaking that he died so young and in poverty.
