Just found this video. Thank you for not having a 10 minute introduction to what we already know what the video is about, or adding fancy presentations to music before you start. I cannot stress how much I enjoyed you just getting right down to explaining the trade!
Your knowledge is a Godsend! The very thing that you were worried about boring your viewers was the exact information I was seeking. I've got a baby watermelons the size of peas dying before they can even grow and I didn't know why. Thanks to you, I know it's because I have 3 or 4 of them per vine, there isn't enough nutrients for them to grow properly and I need to prune my vines. It warms my heart to see you in the garden with your beautiful family. Continued success!!!!
I love the way yall are gardening together as a family it teaches kids patience, importance of self sufficiency and its great for bonding with the family! I love it!!! Thanks for the information as well, helps me out so much. Hope you keep making videos!
Thank you so much for the info. This is my first year growing the crimson sweet melon in the DFW area and they seem to be doing well. I didn't think about pruning them. I have several growing on one vine so this was very helpful. It's nice to see you and your family working together. Thanks again 😊.
@@GrowFamilyNetwork I second our Brother's sentiment! Shalom and blessings of Yeshua! To see your family following the Word by nurturing our little bit of Eden He provides for us here in the South. I have some vines growing out in the garden. I thought I was moving. I have already moved most things. Fruit trees. Herbs. Moved to a local farmer's land. His daughter is tending them. They are also devoted followers of Yeshua and use the word Yeshua in their services. My church also calls upon Yeshua by name. We all live in northeast Texas close to Lake Fork. But my family lives in Louisiana all over the state. Lake Charles to Baton Rouge. Shreveport to Monroe and everywhere in between. Where are ya'll? I am so excited to find your precious family gardening channel! I am going to try pruning my vines. And will make a video! The vines I have didnt get moved because they are too fragile. And some aren't even in the ground. They were in flats still in the plugs I started the seeds in. I just placed them on top of some leaves I was composting in the garden! They grew out of the plastic plugs and are now growing down into the leaves! It iis crazy! I know I have 3 different heritage melons in that flat. But it now is such a big mess of vines I don't know what is what! I will spread the word of your wonderful family channel. Shalom new friends! Please make a video telling us how to make them grow high levels of sugar. I am old woman and know they were more sweet when I was a child.
Hello Louisiana gardening family, I'm very glad you showed this, I'm going to do this with my vines if I have enough time in zone 6 to finish a full harvest the family that gardens together, grow, grow, grow closer together 🤗
Vee Solo :)..... good to hear from you...I've been having a few splitting issues I'll share on the upload in the morning, do there is a chance if u prune, and the one you prune to doesn't make it that u could end up with no watermelon.... we'll see though....have a nice night.....
Great video! Great information!! I did not know about keeping an eye on the tendrils. My second time growing Watermelon. First year was a big fail. It's not easy in Wisconsin but I know it's doable. Hoping for a handful of Crimson Sweet from my vertical container garden. The kids super eager! So great to see the family involved too! The seeds we sew while sewng seeds!
it seems its best to have your watermelon further down the line about the 3rd pollinated melon on the vine instead of near the start of the vine, but now i have melon close to the start of a vine at about 7-8 inch wide in size(decent size) and i cut the vine just after the melon and now it seems to have stop getting bigger, maybe i should of left the vine on so it would of had leaves to feed it, but at least now the plant is now shooting out new vines.
Pretty cool. This is wonderful. I prune my watermelon vines to because I don’t have enough room in my urban food forest. I can’t wait for you to post an update. Happy Gardening!☺️
Great video. I have only grown watermelon twice. The first time was a failure due to cracking. This season I am trying a variety Baker Creek is offering, Ancient Watermelon. Three vines, three melons. My fingers are crossed. Good luck with your's. They look great so far.
I'm growing Bidwell Casabas in Chico Ca. the vines are traveling into my raised boxes and I've tried to train them away from them. It seems to me the casaba is like a watermelon, vine wise, so after watching your video I'm going to trim them down. The only thing that bothers me is I usually get 2-3 harvests a season from each plant and I'd hate to lose some. These casabas grow up to 25lbs
Thank you so much for the informational video! I seriously enjoy seeing others live their life in positivity and sharing knowledge that helps others to create and grow.
So, leave 2 melons per vine and clip the vine after the melons, leaving the little tendril that grows opposite of the melons. Right? I never knew about pruning water melon vines. My Crimson Sweets are running ALL over and out of my garden. Thank you so much!
That what we did ....its up to you tho, based off the size of your growing space, we just couldn't let them run..we had good success besides the 10 or so that cracked open on us
Man I feel your pain there. Live in south Alabama and after storms roll in from the Gulf a week at a time, you can’t get out there and even begin to weed or prune or anything. After the rains stop, you got a jungle to work through and I’m suffering that right now! Good luck to you and blessings!
Grow Family Network I take it y’all gettin all these same thunderstorms that pop up each day too. My sister is coming from New Iberia to visit for the 4th and she asked me to make sure there were no rainy days just so she can hit the beach and dry out!
Hello. Thank you for the valuable information. I'm stuck growing in my front yard. This is my first year. I've noticed that I have lost several melons due to rot. Even those that's gotten some size on them and some of them the leaves are turning yellow or are green with spots. Can you advise what's causing this and if there's anything I can do to correct it? I know one issue is trying to grow them too close together and some inside of an enclosure that I can't get to.
How many fruits do you usually keep per vine? I am thinking of pruning mine back this season to get them to focus on ripening the ones that came on earlier in the season, vs the ones fruiting late in the year.
Hi ! just found your channel and subscribed, sure hope your water melons make it. I have a couple in my front yard in big grow bags (sugar baby & crimson sweet). It's been raining here too but no splitting, so far so good. Have to prune them back like you did, want some big ones! Loved the video, let us see how they turn out.
Find your growing watermelon and go up about 16 inches and cut it there if you wish to help you start getting rid of unwanted vines....also I'm finding raised bed or higher mounds the best alternative so far to splitting watermelons
California Gardening Mom the only thing we ve found a little disheartening is when you prune if one bust you have no more watermelons, in think leave two watermelons per vine for a little longer until they've matured a little more
Hey , I have a question? How is your soil? I have a sandy and clay type soil with about 20 percent good topsoil. I always heard you need a sandy type soil. But my question is... i live in central louisiana and neither me, nor my grandmother's dad,(who used to own this same land) never could grow them in poland/echo, La I get huge vines that stretch out and so I usually get lots of huge plants and buds but NO MELONS!!! Any suggestions?
Never heard of that but with the new population in decline you may have to look into self pollinating them yourself....i think there is some videos floating around on how to identify the male n female flowers in order to do them yourself ...tgis might be an option if you haven't tried it
@@GrowFamilyNetwork thanks yeah i think i may have succeeded!!!!!!! Holy smokes i have 2 melons that are about the size of a halfdollar coin. But we got this dang tropical storm and i got most of them off the ground about 3 inches, incase of flooding
I wish I say your video earlier in the year. I grew watermelons in Boston with some success but the watermelon was not very sweet. Next year I will prune like you did. How did you harvest finally end up? Did you get the 20 watermelons you wanted to harvest?
Lady Wisdom Speaks! Academy lol not at all......too much grass....next year we RE gonna try either mulch or black paper ....the grass worked us so much and when you prune it looks like side shoots form, I'm actually doing some more research now in the yard with the seeds that have sprouted from the seeds that came from rotten watermelon s that feel on the ground
Question so I Just pollinated my watermelon 4 days ago haven't really noticed size increased so I pruned my vines.... should I have noticed increased in the size within 4 days assuming pollination was successful
not quite sure when hand pollinating.... i would say from my experience as long as you don't see the end browning like blossom end rot it will be fine, if you start to see browning on the end pollination failed
2-3 per plant I would say...with my mound experiment last year I didn't prune at all....i did prune the vines but not the melons....i will talk about that this year once our vines start growing
Please correct me if I’m wrong sir… … so the idea is to just cut off the leaves at the top so watermelon can be at the top? And the leaves that grow on the sides? (I’m new to this, may I please get a phone number because I’m gonna need help.)

Wonderful! Just in time. Thank you for sharing! I have 3 sugar baby growing in pot in my yard, NYC. I started trellis them. 2 of them are sharing a large pot and they have about 4 branches each plant showing up fruits. My question is how many branches can I leave for plant. I red that is better leave 1 fruit for branch. The space for trellis is limited. Anybody please help! Thanks a lot! Grow, grow, grow!
Mio Angel now I'm thinking we should've left atleast two or three per plant because if you catch today's episode we been losing multiples to splitting now we kinda wish we would've left a few extra, that way if we would've lost the ones we lost it wouldn't be a total lost like it is now
Louisiana Gardening Family: Yes, I saw the problem. It's frustrated seeing the loss, but I guess is part of the process. On the other hand, thanks for your advice. I'm doing this now. (Grow, grow grow. I love this phrase, because we can grow as a person in this endeavour too. Blessings)

Louisiana Gardening Family yea. Like mine I grew a really big cucumber and 3 more are forming. I also have 3 cantaloupe that are almost done maturing. Also like 7 watermelons. I need to prune them tomorrow

I'm curious, is this the only way to make? Watermelons grow big period because when I was younger. I used to work on watermelon farms. And they never did pronounce. They were trying to grow as many watermelons as it could so that they could make as much money as they could. And generally speaking, the watermelons turned out huge. Period so that's why when I watch this pruning stuff? I'm always amazed isn't even necessiri
Honestly I think it's a fertilizer thing..with natural fertilizers things dont grow as big.....with inorganic fertilizers like most farmers use...13-13-13 or 8-8-8 it doesn't matter it's like steroids and getting muscles without lifting
Shalom, Shalom HalleluJAH Ach. USe some Firewood Ash also. Great on the Minerals if ya Use the Bark. PH fixer also. Yet that Epsom is Gold. Haha Great Growing Family
You would have done better just cutting off the fruit on the vines than cutting the vine. More leaves faster production. Pruning should be done only if necessary. Take it or leave it, advice. I'm a take it kind of guy. Sir Lucifer The Great

You would have done better just cutting off the fruit on the vines than cutting the vine. More leaves faster production. Pruning should be done only if necessary. Take it or leave it, advice. I'm a take it kind of guy. Sir Lucifer The Great
Just don’t cut the leaves and the watermelon the watermelon is not ripe
