The deeply personal story of Rabbi Ariel moved me profoundly. His father’s request for a Baroque flute led him, as a young man, on a journey to Germany to learn from a renowned master. Since then, he has been crafting Baroque flutes, primarily from olive trees grown in and around Jerusalem. His devotion to his craft and a lifetime of dedication have left an indelible impression on me. I must acknowledge his meticulous craftsmanship, though, as an old amateur recorder player who only began making music later in life, I am not fully equipped to appreciate the fine distinctions of his instruments.
I was particularly struck by his innovative technique of drilling tone holes sideways for the ring finger-a challenging task, no doubt-yet one that offers greater ease in playing. Additionally, I learned that he creates specialized head joints, based on early to late Baroque principles, which can be fitted onto Boehm flutes, transforming their timbre into something more muted and sweet. Kudos to Rabbi Ariel for his artistry and devotion! His instruments reflect not just technical skill but a deep reverence for tradition and a heart open to spiritual expression through music.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and heartfelt comment! I’m deeply moved by your words and appreciate that you connected so personally with the story behind the craft. It’s truly rewarding to hear from fellow musicians, especially those with such a passion for tradition and the deeper meaning in music. I’m honored by your recognition of the work and devotion I put into these flutes. Your appreciation of the craftsmanship, especially the innovations in tone hole placement, means a lot coming from someone with such an understanding of the instrument. Thank you again for your kind words and for sharing this journey with me.
