OOOOOOH MYYYY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU! I MEAN I THOUGHT YOU GUYS WERE JUST KIDDING WHEN YOU SAID YOU WERE GOING TO DO THIS STUFF! I was so ready to quit Clownfish TV! THANK YOU KEEP IT UP! Just do a couple a month and i'm good!
Listen. Use a comic printer that actually focuses on comic printing. Comix Well Spring. They freaking love comics and print is the US. So unlike Print Ninja, their shipping arrives on time. And they are about to launch a online comic book store.
Thanks for this. I contacted some local places for my comic, and for 20 copies of 22 page was quoted at $690! And that’s black and white!!! So thank you for more options I can look into!
Clownfish TV I don’t think they’d ever done comics, they didn’t know the sizes or anything like that. So I have to wonder if it was a “give an insane quote since 20 isn’t worth doing.”
Just go to staples. The charge 12 cents per page for Black & White copies. You can order online and get free delivery. Also if you want something with a hard cover binding it'a about $5 per book.
We really need more videos like this. Where to print, and cover things like setting up proper margins, paper type, etc etc. There's so little content out there talking about printing the best product, it really makes or breaks a book
Thanks for the information on small-scale printings, I doubt I would ever make a book for sale, but it would be fun to have a single book printed just as a personal project, or a few for friends or family. Very interesting, the economics of publishing!
I had considered Ka-Blam and Print Ninja, but had been hearing bad reviews lately for both. Which concerned me. Some real horror stories. They're pricing was also high compared to the company I went with. I will check out Mixam for my next book. I printed with Comix Well Spring, and was very please with what I got.
Thank you so much for a video like this. I dream of doing my own comic book one day, it's nearly all I can think about at work at my shitty job. Please more content like this, talk about every step of the process from your own experiences, I love this stuff!
Thanks! I'm not looking to make a comic, but book of prints to sell on etsy and I had /no/ idea how to do that or how to start. This was insanely helpful.
Comic Book Advice video from ClownfishTV, YEAH! The model of Alterna is the one that never stops to amaze me but I still see some colorists out there a little bit hessitant to work on newsprint paper because of the color palette limitations. It will be interesting to hear your take on coloring comics for newsprint if it is possible. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge Kneon and Geeky ^-^.
I simply go to kinkos because I perfer to make my comics huge. I like to combine animation, and storyboards with comics. My comics are storyboard driven like Looney Tunes, and Classic Spongebob. Last year mine was 50 pieces of paper thick.
Thanks a lot for the info. Can you make a video explaining the process and pros and cons of sending your graphic novels/books from a printer i.e., Print Ninja, to an Amazon warehouse?
I've used KaBlam so far for my comic books and they came out great, but the big issue is they take forever to print. Once you place an order you have to wait about a month for the books to arrive, which is tough cause you really have to plan ahead if you need the books for any kind of event (I did). I'm about to print my 3rd issue and I'm going to try switching printing companies because I just don't want to wait that long to have the books.
I miss Createspace. I write novels, but KDP has isssssues with cover art specs. Even with their provided templates it will kick it back at people. Apparently Barnes and Noble has Nook Press and Draft2Digital just rolled out a beta for print books but I haven’t tried either of those yet.
One aspect of newsprint and Mando(?) paper I like better is that they're NOT glossy. That's one of the things I hate about modern comic book printing. Most comics prior to the mid-1990s and the craziness of computer coloring had very simple color schemes but they worked. Everything has to be overly complicated now with PhotoShop and I wonder if something hasn't been lost. Another thing I don't care for is when they recolor classic comics with modern coloring methods. It usually doesn't work well with older art styles. They recently recolored Star Wars Episode IV, the original Marvel Comics adaptation drawn by Howard Chaykin (who HATES his work on that comic as well as the movie series in general), and what they did just looked awful. They should have just left the original coloring in place instead of trying to put in more natural "skin tones" and "shadows." Likewise, I didn't see the point in DC recoloring Batman: Killing Joke. Eventually, they did another hardcover version that had BOTH colored versions of that comic in it! One coloring job that's always puzzled as to why it wasn't fully reprinted was Marvel/Epic Comics colorized version of Akira, the first English translation of the classic graphic novel. Four of six volumes of the series was collected into hardcover b Graphitti Designs but the NEVER reprinted the entire series in hardcover! They never got around to the last two volumes and it seems Marvel and Graphitti Designs lost interest before Marvel's license expired. That was about a ten-year project in adapting and colorizing Akira. Again, it was a pretty colorization of an originally B&W project.
The old comics used screen tones or zip tones for coloring. It's not done any more. Screen tones are expensive and hard to get a hold of. The color screen tones are no longer made.
@@ShinDangaioh They can emulate zip and screen tones digitally. I'm positive I've seen tutorials by artists doing this with Photoshop. You can modify the digital brushes to create all kind of effects. That's something I DON'T mind. I'm pretty sure Manga Studio has brushes that emulate zip and screen tones. I do believe they still make these things in Japan for the manga industry. They may have discontinued these things in the US -- they were STILL making them 16-19 years ago when I took classes taught by an ex-Disney animator -- but Japan tends to hang on and do things the old-fashioned for as long as possible. They don't like to change things up unless the economics absolutely forces it. The US has a tendency to jump onboard new tech without considering the consequences and sometimes things are rushed before they're ready to be used. I remember the old digital comics in the 1980s and 1990s and they LOOKED LIKE DOGSHIT! There are reasons why Iron Man: Crash and Batman: Digital Justice have not been reprinted. I'm not fooling myself into thinking things are GOING BACK to exactly how they did it -- that will NEVER happen -- but they can emulate these effects and it's been done already.
This seems interesting. I don't plan on doing comics, well not until I have an indie video game company, but the Amazon and IngramSpark seems interesting. Yet this does remind me that I got to start editing my first draft and create a second draft of what I have written so far for a book I am writing. However, that will have to wait until after I get into the Air Force.
I am relatively new to your channel... I did not know you did comics and stuff I subscribed because of your commentary on Disney's antics. Very cool to see you have other things I am interested in on your channel. I used to do mini-comics back in the 80's that I traded with a network of other mini comic creators. Wish I had been able to figure out in the early days how to do online comics, I still can't wrap my head around web site creation. Did you fulfill the dream?
Great video! Really helpful. Thanks for the shout out as well. :)
I actually went to your website because they mentioned it I'm planning my next comic project with you guys .
@Alterna are you discontinuing your print services permanently?
Mixam is legit, and the customer service is on point.
All the Kinkos were bought out and converted to FedEx Office stores back in the mid-00s. My brother used to work there in the 90s.

Alterna Comics have changed a lot since then.
Can you setup a shop online and make it so you can sell your books as print on demand, like you were selling a T-shirt, through Print Ninja?
