Underground Japanese Car scene: Our police could learn a thing from the Japanese cops..

  • OK, so it's not really "underground", but these semi-organised weekly events that we stumbled on recently in Japan gave us a great insight into how their car culture and the policing differs to Australia, and the USA.
We went to an impromptu car gathering in Japan, just off the Tokyo Expressway. I'd say there would have been maybe 80-100 cars there (incl those circling that couldn't fit in).
The gathering was reminiscent of our old local car scene, just with a different selection of vehicles.
A cop rocks up in a truck, lights and sirens on. Nobody seems scared or sprints to their car.. He gets on his loud speaker telling people to move along.
When he reaches the top end of the parking lot, he jumps out of his truck and has a quick chat to the attendees while smiling and being positive, simply saying they should move along.
All the cars leave, some in a spirited manner, most of them safely booting it onto the Tokyo expressway giving it a "bit of a squirt", right in front of the cop who really doesn't mind. We are talking 1000hp+ wide body R35s, bagged Lamborghini Huracans, F430's, FD RX7s, the whole selection, right down to the old school VTEC rigs.... The officer doesn't even take note of the registrations. Just stands next to his truck.
The cop sits back and just chills til the expressway carpark is empty, and instead of calling for backup to defect and harass people, he calls a cab for us foreigners to help us get home.
Not only that, he hung around chatting to us and making sure we were safe to get back to our hotel and flagged our Uber/cab down into the expressway parking lot. He refused to leave until we were safely away.
It has been a long time since I've been to a meet where I felt like we were not on the verge of being targeted like fish in a barrel.
For a long time, by default I have felt intimidated by Australian traffic police and it seems honestly like they are proud of the fact people are scared of them, as if that would indicate they are in some way demanding respect.
News flash: Respect and fear are worlds apart.
Of course not all of the five-oh are like this, but many seem to take joy in the fact they instil fear in people instead of a sense of security knowing that the police are nearby.
Australian traffic police command should take a leaf from this book, but I'm not holding my breath.

Not one burnout. Seems respect might go both ways.

The meets in japan are just civil, they may speed off but apart from that the respect is received both ways.

The Real issue is that they were asked to disperse at all. "Yeah, we have a large group of people in one place whom all like cars... We can't be having that. Get 'em out of here!"

i like how guys with a ferrari or lambo show up between the "regular" cars, here in the netherlands they would find themselves to cool to mix with the "regular" folks. and the cops? they would walk around with a hard on and would not leave till that ticket printer was empty. you wouldnt get a chance to get away.

most cars there ain't regular and modded excessively , Nobody is regular in japan , talking about people that are experienced or into drift racing , they're all legends , I like japanese cars over italian cars , and not biased , depends on how the car scheme is and it's potentials and also the drivers skills plays a role there , But mostly what I like is the ethical scene , although in japan there is still alot of illicit stuff going on nor the cops get to track or find about , due to japanese people are way ahead mentally and everything goes smooth :D

This is what it was like in my town before the anti hoon laws. If we met in town most people didn't do anything stupid and if there was an idiot in town and the police asked we'd let them know. If we wanted to have fun we'd drive to one of the out of town spots. If the police turned up they would just tell us to go home. I remember at an impromptu drag meet there was a unregistered car with no plates and the cops just told us all it was time to go home, no tickets. They knew us all. The moment anti hoon laws came out that ended.

That fucking sucks dude. What state and what laws?
I'm a bit out of touch with latest goings on. I kinda don't wanna know. Life is tough enough as it is without properly being able to enjoy cars.

Remember the old mccr meets. Notify police, help police and the still blocked off carparks an dicked people. That being said seems to be a different mentality for police in japan than australia. Cops here always have something to prove and are trying to raise as much money for the corporation that is possible.

I guess we should all just move over there.
It's all going to hell with no signs of improvement here. Even Bob Jane lobbied against new tracks being built. It's all corrupt to the core. smh, stay safe and just cruise.
