Best video by far on the Internet for learning “the catch”…..Practicing your drills over the last couple days and then in the pool today it all came together for me and I’ve made a major breakthrough and I am so encouraged! Thanks Mandy, Patrick 🤗
Hey Swimmers! I know you probably do not have access to a pool at this time... do not worry! The best thing to do is to study and master these movements at home before attempting them in the water. Remember, it is important to rehearse often, until this skill feels more comfortable. You can also practice in front of a mirror so you can correct your form as you go! Enjoy your practice, stay positive, study the movement, and we will get through this. As a beginner I'm struggling so long to learn proper freestyle arm movements. This is the clearest explanation I found .Please make a series on the entire arm movement ❤
This was one of the best series I’ve seen on good swim technique. I’m exited to take this to the pool when they open again. I learned so much, thank you!
Mike Mosby - Thank you for your feedback! I’m happy you liked the series and you are excited to get back in the water. If you have any questions later on, let me know, I will be sure to answer them as soon as I can. Stay well Mike! 🙌🏽🏊🏼♂️🙏🏽 -Coach Mandy
This video is the best one...thank you honestly very much..your concept about the catch make me excited because I must change enough my stroke..I used to swim more flat as you told before..with more high frequency..your idea is wonderful und i feel that my catch is now something that counts not only struggling for fitness. that has also fun .. congratulations und much respect from Greece..
Thank you coach Mandy. So far the best explaination I've seen for catch in freestyle. I would love to see the continuation of this series with legs movement and rehersals for 2B, 4B kicks.
Dear Mandy, I am 65 years old and a year ago I took TI course to learn freestyle. I was able to make progress, but I felt that my stroke was not correct. After improvement i was able to do 25 meter in 24 strokes. regularly I watch your videos and find them very useful. I viewed your three leassons about improving the stroke, watched them few times and did some practice at home as recommended. I went this morning to the pool, and after 20 min I felt the change. Anazing!!!! I need only 17 strikes for 25 meters. Thank you very much for this channel. You are amazing. I watched so many freestyle videos, but there is nothing like yours. Keep on And again thank you very much
Hi Mandy, thanks so much for your time to demonstrate this technique- catching the water. I have been struggling with the catch for 20 something years as I learned to swim by myself. The Catch Series with step by step breakdowns from start to finish and reverse of the demonstration are very clear and eye opening exercises. Your explanation is crisp with tips and pointers for focus on. You really are the perspicuous teacher and coach I have ever seen. I am so grateful I ran across your instruction videos. Thank you so much. May
Thank you for your feedback and I am happy you love the series! Be sure to stay connected and I look forward to reading your progress. 🙌🏊♂️🙏 Best, Coach Mandy
Yet another excellent instructional video. Thank you for the three part series on the catch-so well explained and demonstrated by you. I look forward to practicing the drills and becoming a better freestyle swimmer!
Hi Mandy, This drill is perfect. It transformed my swimming to a smooth and easy one. I watched many videos about 2-beat kick but with this explanation i could get the point. Connecting the kick with catch and the way you explain it is awsemo. It did not only help me to engage my core but also to establish a proper catch. I owe you many thanks. You are the number one.
i've found over the years that the catchup stroke or drill we used to teach finally makes some sense to me. i'm an 80 yr.old former coach and an active masters competitor since 1985. i've been using the catch up as part of my warm up and stroke technique refinement and it seems to be of value. i liked the under water shots of your presentation . invlauble for all swimmers.
Hi Thomas- Thank you, I appreciate for your feedback. Yes, I definitely agree on the catch up drill. That’s awesome you are a USMS coach and swimmer! I’m also the H Masters Coach for UCSF and I have them use a progression for the drill. There is one modification I have change and that is to avoid crossing over (not touching on top of the hands). As long as swimmers maintain parallel lines, they are set. Stay fit and stay well Thomas! 🙌🏽🏊🏼♂️👏🏽😄 -Coach Mandy
Hi CM, Thanks a lot for some swimming distraction in these difficult times. I've always found videos well crafted and helpful, but I think this one is your best yet. My pool still isn't closed but I'm expecting it to be any day. I've not gone since last Thursday. In my garage I've Halo and a bench, a bike turbo trainer and kettlebells which I use to supplement my swimming. These will form the majority of my weekly training now, together with your exercises and I'll come back better and stronger! Hopefully learn some new things from your next videos to keep things interesting!
Endo that’s awesome, you have the set up! Your pool may close soon but it’s possible to adapt during these times. We will all be back to it soon 🙌🏽🏊🏼♂️👍🏼 Enjoy your training! -CM
Hi Coach Mandy ..Great demonstration... I have one question..some coaches say to return arm with bend elbow and keep fingers touch the water ..here I see you return your arm and your ✋ hand up ... What is defernce and which one is better... Thank You
This is a really great demonstration of how to obtain the EVF. I noticed, though, that the dryland rehearsal demonstration is different from the underwater demonstration in one key respect - in the dryland rehearsal, you are already entirely rotated before you begin to pull (i.e. in step one your arm is bent and fingers facing down and you are fully rotated on to your opposite side). However, in your actual freestyle stroke, your catch is complete (fingers pointing at bottom of pool) at the point where your body is flat in the water. It looks like you don't obtain full rotation in your actual freestyle stroke until nearly the end of the pull phase.
That is confusing to me too. If you rotate fully in the catch, then your core and roll is not available for the propulsion phase of the stroke, thus only shoulder is being used for power. In other videos on youtube, one even suggests that the roll doesn't happen until the catch has already happened.
you are doing great, i love your techniques it is very great of help. keep it up good work, need you to make video on head up swimming techniques specially leg movements role and the speed difference between free style vs head up swimming how long one can swim with headup.
Honestly, I would not want to swim very far with my head up as its wastes a ton of energy and ruins alignment in the water. The only time I would advise to pick up your head is to sight...quickly. However, I have a video on this subject here: ua-cam.com/video/Rf8hXs-csqA/v-deo.html you can see the difference between the two movements. Also, here is a video on sighting to see how it can be added to the stroke without completely disrupting body position here: ua-cam.com/video/CxjgGR3wnB8/v-deo.html I can tell you the speed difference is much slower with your head out of the water but go ahead and try the comparison the next time you go to the pool. Enjoy your practice Sirtaj and thank you for watching! Best, Coach Mandy
During the recovery before we enter the water aint we suppose to get elbow bend for high elbow ? Yours is more like a bowling action , or there are two ways to do that? correct me if am wrong
Eeager to practice it tomorrow in the pool. Thanks Mandy. Definitely useful tips and drills. By the way, when do you actually apply the pressure on the upper arm and forearm to pull back? I mean at what degree of the body rotation (relative to water surface line). I tend to apply pressure to pull back when my body is relatively flat in water. Thank you.
this video comes in good point. nothing better than a bit of dryland rehearsal in these days. i have always thought that the catch is more art than science, so... broadway swimming 😄😄😄
Is there a video that talks about how to approach correcting some bad postures or habits that’s been accumulated over the years? I have been doing practices on these catches movements, but as soon as I start a normal swimming lap.. I started to catch water with my arms again, it’s like a reflex that I couldn’t control.
Hi Mandy I was training for a 5k swimathon which has sadly been cancelled . Your videos have been useful and I have progressed well. I would like to keep my fitness and technique up during the next few months. Without a gym I have been using a fitness band to replicate the swimming movements. Can you suggest some land based exercises and maybe a video to demonstrate . Thanks Mark in UK
barbara stephenson Hi Mark, hope you are well! Yes, I will be coming out with outdoor training content this week to help with your practice. 🙌🏽🏊🏼♂️👍🏼 -CM
Nice demonstration. Loved it. From your gliding video some time back. From that point till now. I was able to figure out how to swim that way. From doing a struggling 125 yds, to 1,100 yds. A month ago maybe. I have a race coming up soon. Ironman open water swim. Im going for a 1.2 mile swim "hopefully" in September. It will be my first race and I'm hard at it in the gym.
James Hall fishing awesome, now that’s how to adapt during these times. That is amazing how far you’ve come since. You will have the opportunity to compete, it’s just a matter of being ready no matter what. You’ll get there...keep moving! 🏊🏼♂️✊🏽 -Coach M
Excellent drill. I haven't been practicing it for too long but already I'm finding it very beneficial for connecting the catch/pull with body rotation and using the latter to help power the stroke. That said, it seems to depart from reality - a little bit - in that it calls for you to rotate fully to the other side just while forming the catch, whereas it appears to me that elite swimmers are still rotating through the pull. I'm assuming that this is deliberate in order to get novices like myself to feel that connection between core rotation and the catch/pull?
Hi coatch Mandy, Thank you so much for your posts, I do hope I will someday do this right ... I have a question, Are the catch point and the entry point actually the same point in space? they look in the same position but I'm not sure ...
Hi doranahum - that’s a good question. It is very close but that is also because I’m moving slowly through each point. As your stroke rate increases, the entry will be further ahead. I wouldn’t worry too much about that point as it is minor. However, the most important point to feel is the engagement from your core and late. Hope this helps! Enjoy your practice 👏🏽🏊🏼♂️😄 -CM
hi, İ have a question. A lot of swimmers that i have seen, are catching the water before other hand enter the water. but some others catching water after other hand enter the water. and they are pro. why ?
The drill is not equivalent to the actual swim stroke? Cause elsewhere, the 'pull' is powered by the rotation. If it is not, then the stroke IS shoulder driven. Perhaps instructions on UA-cam are all over the place since they are addressing different needs/audience. Thus, competitive stroke emphasizes different things.
Hi Coach! Thanks for the video. It is actually what iv been trying to figure out. My swim coach told me that I shouldn't move too much of hips for body rotation. Actually I don't think that I move that much but... He said that I should move shoulders instead for the body rotation. So I've been trying not to move my hips but it is just too hard and somehow started having pain on my shoulders.i know there is no right or wrong answer to find perfect position for each of us but can you at least give me some advice how to have smooth and efficient body rotation in freestyle?
Hi 위지아! - The best way to think of this is the hips and shoulders rotate together as one unit. There’s no twisting (shoulders or hips rotating independently) . It’s hard to know since I don’t have a video of your stroke. However, you may have been over rotating so for perception purposes, it may feel like you don’t move your hips much. I’m not entirely sure based on your form. Both over rotating and swimming flat will mess with your balance. In order to feel more stable, you will want to control the rotation from your core so it’s just enough. If you practice this drill in front of a mirror, you must see both shoulders at an angle when you are facing forward. If you don’t, then you are over rotating. This may help clear up the confusion! Keep me posted 🙌🏽🏊🏼♂️ -Coach Mandy
I know this is an older video - but if you ever developed swim workouts for beginners or intermediate swimmers, maybe give us a few here on UA-cam or add the option to purchase from a website like FIVERR. I'd be willing to pay a few dollars for a PDF file on workout recommendations.

Breathing is crucial....plz tell sbt how to breathe??
