Interview with Xasthur

  • "Inevitably Dark" might be seen as a return to Black Metal made by Xasthur for some old school fans. However, one might be asking the questions whether Xasthur ever really was "only" Black Metal or if the project has not really been about much more than only BM? When talking to Scott one gets the impression that this record is - for the time being - a momentarily return only because he has already been off to completely different shores.
The new multitude of melodies dispatched by Xasthur might at first spin not fall onto many welcoming ears because accessibility is surely not the record's stronghold. However, if you give the tracks time, if you spin them repeatedly, you will notice that some of the songs are finding their way into your ears and will stick there, because of the interesting uses of the guitar he lays out on these tracks and also because there are some carefully laid out disruptions within them. Enjoy the interview!

No joke I wouldn't even have recognized him. In the OMM he sounded so lonely and despondent, here he's actually "alive" if that makes sense?

Not the sharpest crayon in the box. but the music he creates you can tell, comes from his deeper conscious. deeper than his immediate intellect. I just wish he would accept his roots and embrace where his sound comes off the strongest. The new record I have not heard entirely, but i already miss his vocals. I hope there is vocals in the later songs i have yet to hear. Such uniquely haunting vocals need to be there at least on the Black Metal esque trks.

When I was around 15 I had the urge to explore the depths of "extreme" music more & more.
Also I was going through my first breakup & unlike so many others who turn to cliche break up songs, I fell down the death /black metal rabbithole. lol
At first I was getting into bands like Cannibal Corpse, Death, Quo Vadis. And eventually I stumbled across black metal. Well actually my older brother had listened to Nargaroth, Gorgoroth etc, when I was like 10 & so it subconsciously rubbed off on me.
And like most genres or bands he would listen to. I eventually would discover them for myself.
So I would also listen to classic & family friendly mainstream black metal bands like Ulver - Behemoth - Mayhem etc, until I somehow fell down the BDSM & other subgenres hole.
1 of the first things I randomly selected was by "Hypothermia - Ur Ångest Född".
And it seriously freaked me the fock out. In a way it was very painful to listen to, but then again there was an element of bliss & catharsis involved as well.
Eventually I would gobble up the whole catalog.
Thy Light, Austere, Life Lover - Silencer, etc.
And after taking a hiatus from playing drums due to planning on saving up on a proper kit, I meanwhile wanted to start playing guitar. And I got my brothers western guitar to practice on. And the first things I wanted to play was Mayhem & Burzum riffs. Which I find quite funny actually looking back.
And eventually I would stumble upon the "One Man Metal Band" documentary about Scott from Xasthur. And I was really fascinated by him. The way he was so passionate & driven by making music & basically dedicating his life to creating art.
And at the time I somehow could relate to his living situation as well. Since I was out of school & was almost grown up & underwent some natural chemical transformations of the adolescent brain, & realized the true colors of most people.
This 1 summer when I was diagnosed with depression & PTSD, from various child traumas, I would basically isolate myself & have gotten a keyboard, electric guitar & made due with my shitty but tolerable Tamburo drumset & basically taught myself everything by myself.
And while I would occasionally rely on tabs back in the day, over the years I've trained my musical hearing excessively over the years, to the point where I can transcribe entire songs simply by listening to them. Which Im very proud of, having achieved my lifes legacy at 26 now.
And while I was mentally in a pretty bad place at the time, I realized that there is beauty in sadness or tough times & that without it, we wouldn't be able to appreciate & value all the good times, which eventually followed.
Even though music shouldn't be a competition & bands ought to outdo themselves by being "more extreme", I can safely say that Xasthurs music is subjectively some of the "heaviest" music I have ever experienced in my life.
And above that, he has a very unique sound & style. And his utilization of very much dissonance has been implemented into my own music as well these days.
And the reason I hold his project so dearly is because his lyrics aren't about folklore & mystical creatures or whatever, but rather about the human psyche & real life like issues & relatable topics, such as homelessness, mental illness, the treacherous nature of society etc.
And while I have the urge as a musician to evolve & discover & play other genres like Jazz, Blues, Reggae etc as well, Xasthur will always have a special place in my discography.
And despite popular believe, you don't have to be depressed or sad in order to listen to DSBM. It's actually about the artist conveying an expression.
You wouldn't feel like cutting off your ear by look at a Van Gogh painting either, wouldn't you?" lol
So as someone who likes to analyse a piece of music on a technical spectrum as well, I sometimes listen to a Xasthur album, while being overall happy.
And Telepathic With The Deceased is probably my favorite of Scott. Especially "Murdered Echoes Of The Mind". This track takes you on a transcendental journey through your own consciousness.
Im currently into very guitar accentuated instrumental music like Buckethead.
And while he's overall known as a shredder, he still has some pretty heart wrenching tracks in his catalog, which I personally associate always with Xasthur or the very essence of this genre. Feel free to check them out.
Buckethead - Baptism Of Solitude - Pike 43 Track 5 - Railroad Trail - Antler Hill - Electric Tears - Electric Sea - Fast Pass - Dream Shores - Cove - Door 1
Bless you all my friends !
(Also, I didn't listen to the interview yet, so I might write another romance novel esque wall of text after I've heard it, so brace yourselves. lol)

@@Nebul3r well, surely as he also uses the correct term throughout the long answer. Thus this little remark in some ways also fires back on you. 😉
