Leah, I love how you make quilting an accessible hobby by helping people learn how to finish their quilts on their home machines, and not have to send them out, paying for someone else to quilt them. I am equally pleased to see you using fabrics available at JoAnn Fabrics, which can also make quilting accessible to more people. I would agree that there is some very nice fabric there (have not scoped it out since they added to their quilting collection), providing you understand that there is a wider range of quality, so you have to be discerning. Another thing I love about your video tutorials is that you demonstrate chain stitching and the use of the scrap piece under your needle when you start. It is hard for me to watch some other tutorials where they take each piece out and press it, leaving threads hanging all over. (Maybe if I had an automatic thread cutter I would feel better about that.) So hooray! Thanks for the video and yet another creative pattern to inspire!
Thank you Barb! I'm so glad you like the way I'm teaching in these videos. Yes, I agree, we can make quilts out of a huge variety of fabric and materials. There's no reason to get stuck on where you buy the fabric from! On piecing - I can't piece any other way without tearing my hair out! I'm so glad to hear you like that as it's one thing that I'll never change!
I’m happy Joann choose you to try their fabrics. I’m also really happy that you love the colorful fabric you used on this lovely quilt top because it’s my background for the friendship quilt. Thanks for sharing with use.
Leah, I love the fact that Joanns Fabric reached out to you for their quilters fabric lines. Maybe this is going to be something great for us as followers on your tutorials and blog and also your podcasts. Love the pattern and fabric. Maybe they will come up with a monthly box that is affordable. Great job girl
I've seen these new quilting fabric at Joann...I love the 1930's fabric, and now i have no problem getting it from Joann. they have such great quilting fabric now..
I love quilts that have that woven look! I would like to press seams open but find that if I do I cannot nest the seams to get the most perfect match of points. Also, it's my opinion that for garment sewing, seams are pressed open and they hold through many, many washings. Much more than a quilt will ever have. So I believe that pressing open does not interfere with the integrity of the seam. Love your tutorials! I haven't yet visited my local JOANN store but will soon!
Great question Cindy - I find the seam matching issue largely to do with fabric prep, not how the seams are pressed. When my fabric is washed, starched, and pressed before cutting, it's much more stable and stiff. Then when I piece with a 1.5 mm stitch length and press seams open, the pieces are much more stable and locked together. I pin a bit before the matching seams and they match every time. I don't depend on the seams nesting, just my pin, or pressing the two pieces firmly together with my fingers to guide them through the machine. Does that make sense?
Yes, it makes sense. Thank you. I will give it a try again. I didn't use starch when pressing them open before. I do like the fact that there's less bulk when the seams are open. I'm my own worse enemy....if my points don't match it drives me nuts!!
Try a few wonky blocks just to loosen up a bit. Sometimes when I'm being too picky I find forcing myself to do the opposite works great. Also remember the quilt won't fall apart if the seams don't match!
Colleen, I buy fabric for the online shops and get monthly Subscriptions from these online sites. And the new quilting fabric from Joannes is just as nice.
I've always been very careful about the fabrics I buy from Joann's because the excellent ones are mixed in with those of such low quality I would never put them in a quilt. I do find nice ones from time to time mixed in with all the others. Perhaps with Leah promoting the store and their fabrics, they will upgrade more.
I really like this pattern! Are you able to provide directions on how to add a forth row to make it bigger? I know I would need to make 5 more blocks but am having a hard time figuring out how much extra fabric to buy, sew, and cut. Thanks!!
For free patterns, I make one single size and have fabric requirements calculated for that size and shape. If you want to make it bigger, you'll need to draw a diagram and do the math based on how the quilt was constructed to figure out your yardage.
Thank you for teaching us the pattern. But I must ask Did you Like the fabric? I did see you liked the Look of it .How is the thread count? dose it fray a lot or hold up like quilting fabric? Is it Thin?
I really liked this fabric from JOANNS. I did go to the store in Charlotte to check out the fabric before deciding to do the video and felt the fabric in person. Trust me, I'm pretty picky! This fabric felt thick, with a nice sturdy weave, and I couldn't see through the white on the triangle print. It also stiffened up nicely after only one starch. Thinner fabrics will take two or three starch and presses to stiffen so that made Dad and I both happy!
what a fun fun pattern .. thank you again for sharing.......question......could be I am tired this afternoon.....but the rows look slightly wavy? Has anyone else seen that or noticed that?
It was a wide variety of prints, but the good thing about quilts is you can make a beautiful top with just two fabrics. I'm so happy with how this turned out!
Hey Leah! That is so cool that Joannes gave you fabric to play with. Does this mean you have a new partnership in the works or was this really a one time deal? Would be cool to watch you make it then buy the fabrics at Joannes. What I really want to ask...how would you quilt this? My thinking is either quilt straight vertical and horizontal lines to accentuate the weave aspect of the block, or go the opposite direction with a very curvy motif. Or maybe one long continuous spiral?
Right now it's a one time thing, but who knows!? I was delighted to be asked and enjoyed making this quilt and would love to do more. On quilting this Double Basket Weave Quilt, check out my tutorials on quilting the Basket Weave Quilt - it's kind of the same concept with more fabrics. For that quilt I quilted straight lines and circles, which would be a good starting point for quilting this doubled version: leahday.com/pages/basket-weave-free-quilt-pattern
Yes, I think it's good stuff! I went to my local store in Charlotte, NC and checked out the fabric there in person first. It feels just like a local quilt shop - nice and thick with a sturdy weave. If you're worried, try looking for a JOANNs store in your area to check it out.

I agree! It felt the same as fabric I get from Moda, Kona, and Craftsy so why not?!
Looking forward to seeing how you quilt it! I love this pattern, Leah.
I'm really wanting to finish it quickly because I'm planning to use it as a table cloth on my dining room table. I have so many bed quilts - why not!?

Cute pattern. I just got a remanent of that triangle fabric at Joann's the other day. :)
Aw! Great minds think alike!

MUY HERMOSO TRABAJO. FELICITACIONES
Gracias!
what a fun fun pattern .. thank you again for sharing.......question......could be I am tired this afternoon.....but the rows look slightly wavy? Has anyone else seen that or noticed that?
This is just a quilt top pinned to a quilt backdrop so yep, it's probably wavy!
Seems like such a random mix in the box. You did a good job, Leah.
It was a wide variety of prints, but the good thing about quilts is you can make a beautiful top with just two fabrics. I'm so happy with how this turned out!

Leah Day thanks Leah! That definitely helped!
Loved it. Can’t find free pattern
You can find it here: leahday.com/pages/double-basket-weave-quilt-pattern
Please help me with the inches so I can try it out.....luv from india
1 inch = 2.54 cm.
What do you feel about the quality of these fabrics? Are they similar to what you would find at a quilt shop?

Is it just me or is there a lot of left-handed Quilters?

Not enough of us! ;-)
LOL! Really? Probably the same amount of lefties and righties, just us lefties have to make everything look weird and flipped backwards!
