    She actually sounded REALLY similar to how she does when she's about to cry or is crying already. Her voice gets a lot thicker than normal and less forward, which is something I think happens to most people. I honestly think she was just tired and really emotional in this performance, which took a little bit from her normal technique, but really not a lot. She still DELIVERED this song!!!

      Yeah. With everything going on with Pete's recent breakdown, I think she is dealing with a lot and feeling a lot of responsibility unfortunately. She needs to take a step back and get off of social media. She needs to heal from Mac's death. I feel for her. I loved this performance because it was SO. RAW. but I also hope she is truly taking care of herself.

Although Ariana wasn’t vocally well as she normally is on this performance , you didn’t bash her like others would , you took it as “ok we have this thing , but let’s look at the positive “ . It made me realize that when I’m having 70-80% days, that this is what it’s like and that we can’t bash ourselves for a bad day , we make the most of what we can sing for that day even if it’s not our best.

    I literally said most of what you said when I first saw this performance. I don’t coach professionally although I do light work with my alma maters gospel choir. I trained on and off (classically) throughout high school and then some more when I was a vocal performance major my freshman and part of my sophomore year of college. I could tell that she sounded tired. She’s doing a lot of singing and recording as of late, and also just going through a lot in general, which can be hard on the body and in turn the voice. The word that stood out that you used was “compensate” because that’s what her body was doing. I noted her adjustments as well to sort of push through it all. All in all, she’s a professional and held it together quite well. She still sounded amazing and I think people who may not have the same ear for those technical nuances just jammed like it was a normal performance with her killin it as she usually does. I love her so much, and I appreciate your videos and insight.

    Oh my god! What you said about vocal therapy was so interesting, I had no idea the body was so, err, smart? I mean, I'm forever amazed by our bodies' ability to self-heal and I would love for medical research to dig deeper into this. I've read some similar stuff (but it was more about viruses) that shows that we could trigger the body's natural healing process like antibodies and stuff, which would make for less medication, thus less risk of getting accustomed to the medication, which would make the medication more effective when it is actually needed. Pretty interesting stuff which I never thought I'd be discussing under a voice analysis video. That's why I love you, Sam Johnson.

    Super In-Depth Analysis! your videos really go into depth in ways that only a super capable vocal coach could. I think a lot of that "not feeling well" & "tension" might have to do with Mac Miller's passing, the fallout with pete davidson & maybe even the colder, winter weather bringing her down in a seasonal-affective type of way. slight issues with technique happen even to the best of singers, as you said! to the general public, Ariana still sounds Angelic!

My voice changed then and I became very insecure and I pretty much stopped singing altogether. Ever since I found your channel, I've been in my closet (😂) doing bubble lips, humming, and straw work. A lot of people just say nice things because they don't want to upset anyone or they're not so well trained in the field and are easily impressed. I like that you didn't have an overreaction to her whistle notes like some others did but appreciated them in a critical and positive way which is what singers and the public need to hear. Great critique! All of what you brought up (especially relaxing the neck/jaw) is a constant work in progress as a soprano. It is sooo easy to tense up to reach those notes. And some days your voice is just funky. I have had my fair share of performances where the song turned out well but your voice isn’t as focused as usual.

    Hey, doing PR for a new song seems like it could be take a toll on one's voice, especially if you're running all over, seeing all sorts of people, flying etc during flu season! Her voice is insane... And her control just blows my mind. I'm amused, I've only been able to hit whistle notes once... Oh well, I'm not a professional singer, so it doesn't matter. 😋

    • @LaynieFingers
      @LaynieFingers 6 років тому +15

      @Michael Vaughn So she hasn't done any interviews, radio, photo shoots, etc? There's more to the music business than performing, and the physical and mental stressors of life can affect things. And let's be real- almost everyone I know is sick with something... We don't know what she was dealing with here, but I think it's reasonable to think she's off in some way here. She still killed it, but she seems off.

    • @hyun808
      @hyun808 6 років тому +1

      @Michael Vaughn I'm pretty sure those whistle notes are pre recorded tho .
      She can whistle but Ariana hasn't shown much consistency with whistles and I highly doubt she could've pulled that off on the spot .
      And I can tell it's pre recorded ..and I doubt she'll be singing those live on tour or be able to pull it off on a live video .
      But that is fine ! Pre recorded vocals during live performances isn't a conspiracy and it doesn't mean they can't do it .
      And it helps them preserve their voice too

    • @hellopi.1505

      Lol no you can't. The camera zoomed in for that exact reason .
      You don't have to prove to me it's NOT pre recorded .
      I can just tell it is and it probably is .
      Btw I whistle too and no your neck don't constrict lol .
      Whistles are very effortless and requires VERY little neck OR vocal chord work .
      In fact you don't even feel your larynx vibrate like how it does when you sing or talk .
      From what I can tell by her body language and just singing mannerisms associated with whistling .... It just doesn't add up .
      Watch anyone whistling and they'll be perfectly still and the only thing that moves is their hands and mouth lol .
      Seems more like she feels awkward lipsyncing to it so she moves her body around.
