Those taillights look like something modern that came out of factory yesterday, and this car came out 20 years ago
Because they are first, and only propably neon (not LED) tail lights. Italian touch - you don't get it in modern cars.
Taught the same thing
Reminds me of 911 991 tail lights
If Bmw would have kept this Z8 a Secret made in 2000s but introduced it to the world in 2022 it would have been totally Acceptable looks like it just came out
Like my car a z4 2005
Doug: I've borrowed this Z8 from a viewer here in...
Me: Yea yea, we know, Southern California...
Doug: ...Northern Virginia
Around this time Doug was living in Philadelphia still
I've seen this car in the area! Northern Virginia goes from "hunting country" to "Ah yes we have the Fox Hunt every year where we chase down foxes in our McLarens every Tuesday" real quick.
he lived down here for a while I've met him at Katies cars and coffee!
People in other parts of the US don’t understand just how money the DC Metro area is lol
@@DJNotSure I was thinking the same exact thing! This looks like McLean area honestly but could be out in Loudoun where I am. The hunts literally come through our farm lol.
imo every convertible should include a hard top for the winter
I live in sweden and my audi cab has very good insulation when the temp drops.
And tampons for the owners

@@weedshoes5089 Why the fuck would you have 2 m3s? I think we have a liar on our hands.
This car in my eyes is one of the most beautiful modern retro inspired cars ever made.
Absolutely. I definitely see inspiration from the early 1960s
that sounds painful
The Z8 is my personal favorite BMW of all time.
Doug forgot to mention the car was in James Bond The World is Not Enough. Especially cool is that the owner of this car got a vanity plate to match the plate that was on the car in the movie.
030398ryoma I didn't notice it till you pointed it out! Lol
030398ryoma oh is that the car brosnan’s driving in Azerbaijan? that’s awesome
That must be why it's on UK plates but was imported from the continent.
It's not in UK plates, but has Virginia plates with the same combination and a fake vanity front plate..
030398ryoma I've loved the z8 since playing James Bond on my ps2 when I was just a little kid!
I've had my eye on this car for a while. So after saving enough coin, I decided to finally make the purchase. I picked it up for around one hundred and twenty thousand.
I purchased it in the "James Bond" car section, on Xbox One's Forza Horizon 4 game.

Also feel compelled to note those are NOT toggle switches. Those are rocker switches.
Totally agree. You can see inspiration from the early 60s on this beauty And I love it.

The Z8 was designed by the same guy who designed the Aston Martin DB9 and Vantage, Henrik Fisker. Yes, that's the guy behind Fisker Automobiles as well.
Nicolaj Vestergaard Yes he’s a great designer
Nicolaj Vestergaard fisker had viper engine
And it's also why the front of the Fisker look like the front of the Z8 !

i've seen one of these in person today and it looks much, much better than in pictures. in person it's actually very beautiful
The turn signal indicators being in the centre of the dash isn't a problem:
*BMW drivers don't signal.*
There's a lot of truth to that although in my city, the biggest douches drive the Toyota Prius.
imma switch from vag to bmw...i will never ever have to use a indicator again
With the new tech, if you don’t use your turn signal, the bmw won’t let you merge to the other lane, because it will put you back in. It’s the collusion prevention whatever tech they have.
So, I guess, rejoice! Bmw drivers are now forced to use turn signals.
VAG means Volkswagen-Audi Group ;)
Not normally a BMW fan but this would be one worth having for a collector. It is absolutely beautiful.
It's one of the most beautiful cars of all time, and it's also one of James Bond's best partners.

People talk crap about Doug because his 'reviews' are ridiculous, uninformed and based solely on opinion. I can't count the number of reviews I've watched where he is not informed or completely clueless, like the review of the K900 which he was talking about a DIFFERENT model car completely! The Coolant Expansion Tank "COLD" may indicate the coolant level when cold
Siiilent coolant level should be lower when cold, not at the very top of the tank.

Eh, who cares if you can or can’t see the turn signal in your line of sight. Not like BMW drivers use them anyways 🤷♂️
Jesse Singh Who cares? Lots of drivers because knowing where someone else is going helps you, as well as them. However I certainly agree with the BMW drivers bit, I would have to also expand this to include Audi drivers and very often, anyone that has a slightly more upmarket car than most of other people. Unfortunately BMWs and Audis have become so popular these days that they now seem to be the cars of 'most other people' and thus have lost their premium image.
BMW drivers really are the worst.
Wor Jackie That's fine with me. Us car guys can tell an rs7 from an A5 and because they're so popular there's a bunch on the used market for cheap
Jesse Singh I use my turn signals.. only they are hard to use sometimes so typically I just use the tap for 3 blinks
I can't believe you didn't talk about the lamp, underneath the hood. I have never seen that before, that is something special!

The fact that it’s simple has made it look timeless. You don’t actually see anything that dates it (with the info door closed). Love the look.
Who remembers Top Gear's Clarkson lambasting the BMW Z8? He hated the car.
9 years ago, I really wanted to buy a used Z8. Plenty were available for $85k-$100k on the used market, but the risk of buying a used model with a bent chassis was too real. Most cars were being sold without the performance kit--chassis stiffener. I didn't take the plunge and passed on the purchase.
Prospective Z8 buyers have to really know their stuff to avoid getting a damaged car.
OzoneEditions that was 9 years ago
*prospective.
Technically it was the Alpina Z8 that Clarkson didn't like, the Alpina and the vanilla BMW are very different cars
yeah i remember that.
I remember that, I always felt he was a bit harsh on the Z8...
ME (when Doug is reviewing my car): Dont you dare press, play, and fiddle with all the switches and buttons inside my priceless car....

I have a 2001 Z3 3.0 w/ 50k miles has a soft top you have to pull down and push up to start, nuclear warning sounder for headlights on , strut tower brace, side vents and lights, roundels all around , appeared in a Bond Golden Eye movie, check , missing key pouch, hard top w/ stand, 2 less cylinders and $190k from the price tag.
But includes a ton more driving excitement than the Z8 blvd cruiser.
"Utter theme of this car - simplicity." Now we know how hard James Bond's line of work is.
Hey Doug, love watching your video's. At 4:30 you said the coolant reservoir only has "COLD" printed on top. If you look at the side of the tank it has an arrow extending down to a line on the side of the reservoir. This is to indicate the "COLD" fill position of the fluid. As in this is where the coolant level should be if the engine is "COLD". Most coolant reservoirs have a "COLD FILL" position indicator so you don't overfill the coolant. Keep up the cool videos!
Yeah hes a little ignorant at looking at why cars have features or what theyre for and just trumps it up to a "wierd quirk"

Doug is a pretty good editor, so why does he cut himself off mid-word when he cuts to the card with his e-mail every single time?
Scott Gordon jokes I hope
It depends on if he has an article online for us to read, he always records himself talking about an article, but doesn't make articles about every car.
Bcs it's unlikely you will skip it and you will be quite focused when it pops up, also its short and subtle
Unless you're reading a script word for word, it's easy to ramble on, and when you go back to edit, sometimes you have to make a mid-word cut. I have a bad habit of it myself
Scott Gordon you notice the audio cuts out and you look at the screen thinking something happened?

I'm with you doug, forget the alpina. Get the better motor with the manual
Foto4Max to a certain extent yes, but the z8 still leans more towards sporty than cruiser and a manual will only add to the fun.

I love this car. I worked at a bmw dealership in 2007 and was able to drive one. When you bought one from the dealer you had to sign a contract preventing you from reselling it during the first year of ownership. Because they all instantly went up in price

In 1986 I was living in Los Angeles, CA. I bought a 1973 BMW 3.0 CSi in Milan Italy. Drove it to Antwerpen and shipped it to Long Beach CA (all for less than $1,000). The 3.0 CSi was in great shape.
When I picked up the car in Long Beach, I had to DoT it before they let me take it. Seatbelts were the main thing. But CA would never let me register the car there. So I drove it to Tucson, AZ, forged a bill of sale, paid $10 for a bond, pulled out 3 of the 6 fuel injectors and went through smog check with flying colors. I got my plates and registration and drove it back to LA. 120 mph between Phoenix and Quartzsite behind two semi’s driving like hell. The faster I went, the lower the car got to the ground, like a big hand on it pushing down. Every year I would declare the vehicle out of state and get my smog test nullified. Easy Peasy.
But the paperwork went from floor to waist. It was a big job bringing a gray market car over.
This coupe had real Cloisonne baked enamel BMW emblems. The inside was all hand made and fitted. Even had plywood sheets cut partially through so they could bend around the center counsel (covered with leather). Seats were styrofoam shaved with a knife then covered in leather.
This car didn’t handle like a 2002. As mentioned in this video, it was a long car with a straight inline 6 with 200 hp.

I am very much shocked that the Z8 isn't a super great handling sports car. And, who cares? It's gorgeous and I can't imagine anyone not wanting to go for a ride in that car. Thank you, Doug.
You missed the biggest point of this car…
It was a James Bond car and the number plate suggests is that of the actual car used in the film!
In America you can choose whatever number plate you like I believe (well, withing limits), so he has chosen to buy the same number plate as the one Bond had. The car in the Bond film was not even a real Z8! BMW hadnt actually atarted making the car, so gave the prototype they had to the studio who copied it and made 2 kit cars plus a shell (which gets cut in half). The kit car which is roadworthy is in the London Film Museum.
If it WAS the one from the film - this would have been a poor review missing out the quirks and features like surface to air missiles, machine guns and remote driving from the key fob (that was in the BMW 760 review he did the other day though!).
This car is the bond car
spudit2003 The car used in the film was based on C4 Corvette by the way

INUMIMI28 what the stunt/mock cars were, doesn't change what the Z8 is
When I was a young boy, a school friend of mine had one of those (his father of course who was a designer with BMW in Munich) and I always thought the Z8 was something like a Mazda MX-5 with 100 hp and 1.6l engine :D
when i was 8, I had a toy car of this, never knew it model, didn't even know its bmw. Just played with it, a full metal toy car. This stirs up more memories of my childhood.
When you were talking about how it could be annoying having the turn signal indicators in the middle you're forgetting BMW drivers don't use them anyway so it wont be an issue.
I know a blue z8 alpina owner who bought it new. An old man. He wants to have low milage so he only drives it on summer weekends till it's getting more worth
