Thanks for this.. It was difficult finding a video that had the vehicle problem addressed. Most seemed to assume the vehicle had an 4 wire adapter built in. Not true for my 2002 Forester. Also, great to see a genuine old Simpson meter! Mine have long ago gotten broken and now I have several of the free meters from Harbor Freight. Sorry but I probably won't wait for the Amazon delivery. I've been towing this trailer for a while with incorrectly wired lights.
Also need an adapter for a 2012 RAV4. No other source tells you this. Instructions just say "connect to turn/brake left" or right. And that doesn't give you brake lights.
Thanks for the video, my dog ate my connector off of my bronco. Whoever wired it before did some weird color mismatch rainbow puzzle. My dogs also ate my trailer wires a year ago but I just had to change the whole thing so it was easier.
Yeah! Now you can trade Cutting them for burning them. J.K. it takes a bit of practice to get the hang of but works great in a pinch. (Pun intended) Thank for watching! Subscribe for more!
After you hook up the wiring, how are you running out of the vehicle to the trailer itself? I see a hole in the bumper where it looks like i can run the wire, but im having a tough time fishing it through. I'm curious how you did that. Thank you for the tutorial
@@redneckryan i went down behind the headlight and out through that hole in the bumper. That way when I'm not using the trailer I can tuck everything away sight unseen
Good to know. I’ll be renting a trailer for my dirtbike to go up to High Point In PA. Forgot to have them install the light plug when they installed my hitch
Question. i have an 02 Dodge Ram 1500. My 4 pin flat connecter on vehicle for trailer works fine. EXCEPT THE RUNNING LIGHT. My 7 pin connector on vehicle for trailer works fine. EXCEPT THE RUNNING LIGHT. What do you recommend? Thanks.
it was a fuse. thanks for replying friend. i thought truck running lights, and trailer running lights were same fuse. thats why i overlooked it. duh! lol
AWESOME! Glad I could help. Yes sometimes if the vehicle is equipped with a factory tow package the trailer lights will be fused separately. I love when it turns out to be something simple.
Hello, I’m hoping you can help with this. I have a truck that when I plug the trailer lights in it shorts the brake light fuse. Then when I shut the truck lights off, the trailer lights stay on. I have took it back to the shop three times and they keep saying they fixed it. There was “shorted wires”
@Letter2Mgmt that's a tough one to troubleshoot over the internet. I would start by taking the trailer bulbs out and testing all wires for a short to ground. If there are no shorts to ground on the trailer the problem is with the wiring on the vehicle side. Use a volt meter or test light to isolate the issue. You could contact the manufacturer of the trailer light adaptor.
Hey thanks. My dad had a simpson 260 when I was growing up. They are the best in my opinion. I buy them whenever I see them at estate sales and such. They still sell them new- amzn.to/3kluBHL
Yeah there are a couple of different ways that can work but typically, trailer bulbs have two intensities. The low beam will be running lights when your headlights are on and the high beam is for break and signal. The 4 puns on the connector are ground or common. Low beam(both tail lights low). Left high. And right high. When you break it will typically turn both signals on. You might find this configuration on an older vehicle, but most modern vehicles use separate bulbs for brake and signal.
Thanks for clearing this one up for me.
Almost spent $229 on a wiring kit for my car specifically. This saves $200 doin it from scratch.
Thank you!
You got it bud! Good luck.

No problem Jim. Glad to clear things up. The old simpson meters are the best I much prefer analog to digital.

Didn't know I needed this video, until now. I have a 98 XJ and glad I saw this!
This was the only video that made it clear what wire did what which made the rest self explanatory
Funny that I'm doing this on my vehicle and as it turns out its xj as well. Thanks bro
Good luck!
Losing bolts happens to the best of us lol great video thank u. Helped me out
Thanks for sharing man! Straight up info needed all the way to the one you used. CHEERS.
Happy to help!
Life saver! I encounter the same problem with my 99 Land Rover. Thanks!
Happy to help!
Hey thanks. I was wondering why i was missing an extra wire in the kit. Lol so 4 wires is not sufficient for these newer cars. Thanks for the link
I needed to wire up my XJ also. Thanks man!
You're welcome! Good luck!
Shout out to to the man with a "Simpson" old school meter...
Thanls fpr the video. That lighter trick will be my new buddy lol cant tell you how many wires ive tried to shave into and cut my fingers lol

"Of course it's a 10mm." Classic!
Very helpful.Thank you. Mechanic charge $125 for this job
UHAUL Does it much cheaper
I safe $125 watching your video
This is my kind of guy right here...
I drop screws and bolts all the time..
I just knew you were going to be missing that 10mm..
Take care pal
It’s always the 10 mm in the left hand glove!!

This will be very helpful. Thank you.
You kan remove small pieces of elektikal tape and wrap the wire it's easier than stikking and entire roll between a wire bible.
Yeah, but I eat a lot of fried chicken so I have greasy fingers and it never sticks right
Soldering before taping is advisable. Road vibration will kill a twisted connection.

Don't know much about the dodge rams, but I'd look to see if it is fused somewhere.

Just pay extra get plug in harness from curt and it's so much easier to install
So who is curt? Where do i get the plug in harness?
@@rlowle1228 it's a manufacturing company that makes harness for trailer wiring Google curt harness with make of SUV or tuck
Yeah and pay upwards of 120+ bucks this is 18 bucks.
Thank you !!
Your welcome
When I connect brake light vehicle side to the turn signals trailer side it turns my turn signals on on the vehicles
I dont understand why you would want to connect trailer turn signals to your break lights.
Awesome.
Thank you.
Didn't yr dad teach you to solder those connections? 🤣 @6:40 :)
Nice Simpson meter ya got there!
Yes he did teach me to! haha, nothing better than a Simpson 260!
@@redneckryan Nothing other than a 270 😂🤣😂
What if my truck has no color coding on it so I can't tell ?:
Them you turn your lights or blinkers on and use a meter or test light to determine which wire does what.
I’m not saying it won’t work, but why not even but connect it?
Dude! Use vampire tap connectors, not strip-wrap-tape!
Nah, I'm good. I've never liked those things. Why buy it when you can build it!
Wow... thats a nice old meter...

I think you need an adapter like the video uses.
what is the adapter I need for the 4 pin?
amzn.to/3tiop6R
your wiring the wires together backwards, because if u decide to wire nut it the wires will unravel.
I won't wire nut them
Wiring ? Its a^$#@< just to plug it in
