Amazing intro! This is the best review I've seen of this car so far. Completely agree with everything you said. Toyota do know how to make fun cars by themselves when they choose to, but I can understand why they've been the way they've been. This is also why I'm actually more excited and proud for this car over the new MK5 Supra. Ever since that Japanese economy bubble burst in the early 2000's, they needed to change to stay afloat and hopefully at or near the top. The market also changed over time. People started to value comfort, features, space, and gimmicks rather than fun, agility, and quirks. To add fuel to the fire, as soon as the economy started recovering (at least for the American market), people started to go crazy for SUV's. Especially as SUV's started to get better gas mileage over time. Our roads are definitely not restrictive unless you live in a dense city like San Francisco. So for the same price or not much more, people would opt for the SUV over the equivalent car/sedan. They get more space, more car for the money in their eyes. An analogy would be like shopping for a house. Lets say both homes are next to each other. Same prime location, but 1 is a 2-story and the other is a 1-story. If you priced both homes almost equally, wouldn't most people choose the 2-story? So huge props to Toyota for producing this car, even though I'm totally bummed it will not be sold in America.

Never in the History of the Automobile, in this Cov-19 Pandemic year, or never in my lifetime, I was born in 1965, has the Car become much more important to us all, other than just a means of transportation!! I am sure it has been more than just commuting, they are directly keeping us all sane, more healthy, contributing to our overall mental health and most importantly making us all feel more optimistic about our Post-Pandemic lives!!!! In my eyes, this has been the YEAR OF THE CAR!!!! I should mention this as well. I am sure many of us here know of the inevitability of a financial recession happening world wide now. And many, many large and small companies going broke. Many larger companies crying they’ve had the worst sales this year in their short histories, ie Car Manufacturers. BUT! I am sure I am not alone in noticing this right now! Who knows of a family member or friend, that has bought a new or even brand new car this year? For me, 2 neighbors have bought brand new cars, my niece bought a brand new SUV this year, and I have seen more trailers with old cars ontop than ever before in my street!!!! I have even added an old classic car to my Dream Garage Collection this year!! I personally think we are all buying MORE cars this year then I can remember…No matter what the media is telling us all about, with our inevitable recession, and no one having any money to spend. In short..It really is the YEAR OF THE CAR!!!! My 2 cents. I’ve put forward this year to our online car enthusiast community. @@realMaverickBuckley In Canada we would be able to import it in 2035 and the US 2045 lol. We don't get this Yaris at all. The model that is sold here as a Yaris is a rebranded Mazda2. And Toyota will stop offering that too. We even had a petition to get the GR Yaris here.Which probably resulted in a GR Corolla with the same setup (engine, maybe AWD). It's not the same of course, but it's something. It has not been revealed yet.
Yeah in general the USA market wants CUVs and SUVs. For "safety" and "comfort" reasons. I think Canada is going that way Only hot hatches we have are the VW Golf range, Civic Si and R, the Velostar N and that's it. Hyundai pulled the Elantra GT. Ford pulled the Focus RS. Audi has pulled their hatches. We still get small hot sedans, but they aren't the same.
As a US Citizen who loves small, light cars and rally hatchbacks in particular: damnit. Now that Toyota's back in rallying I'm waiting for Honda to give us a 3 cylinder Fit Type R with a 9000 RPM redline... but then, we probably won't get that either.
Nice one Jonny. That ‘standard Yaris’ leaving the ‘Foodies’ car park is just around the corner from where I live in Waterloo, Belgium! Keep up the good work!
More fantastic material for us - thanks Jonny. Big up Toyota for doing this project properly! I would have expected them to just create a mildly tarted-up regular Yaris, but no sir, this is the real deal. Could be the perfect car for funtime progress on Scottish B-roads?!
Hell yeah Craig go for it. I recently picked up a 2016 Chevy Spark EV to experience what an BEV is all about and which is a lot of fun but lots less $$ for a toy. That car will be a blast. We know age is just a number anyway.

Hey you old boys(just turned 62 lol). These little monsters are absolutely built to precision. I just bought myself a 2019 Ford Mustang 10r80 and it is the most complete car I have driven. Had it upgraded with magnetic suspension, huge auto gearbox, dropped 2 inches all round, Roush TVS 2650 supercharger, sub frame brackets back and front, coolers for gearbox, differential, supercharger, brakes and more. It is an absolute animal and really loves to eat little euroboxes, . So perfect in handling you really need to drive to survive
Brilliant video Jonny. Really cool editing. Love the rally cars overlaid on the shot of the new GR. What a car for enthusiasts. As you say, perfect for UK roads too thanks to small size, relatively light weight and properly sorted suspension. Also it fast without being ridiculous. Has ‘I want one’ written all over it to me. Well done Mr Toyoda and Mr Makinnen. It shows what happens when enthusiasts rather than ‘bean counters’ build a car.
People who buy those are badge snobs. The cold hard facts are the Japanese can compete for far less. Wait until Hyundai releases their RN30 or whatever name they will call it. Mid engine, AWD. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
That is one polished, well executed homologation special. Another great car we’ll never get in the USA. I know it’s an apples To oranges comparison but I felt the same way watching this as I did reading about the Nissan Sentra SE-R back in the day. I bought a new one in 1993 and always regret selling it. I agree this car will be something people just want to own even if it isn’t particularly practical or useful to them. For some reason, I put off watching this so long I forgot about it until I began listening to the latest Smith and Sniff. Then I though. Wha? Hang on a minute. I’ve got to see what they’re on about! Great video as always. Very Top Gear..esk camera work in the beginning with the images playing over the bodywork of the car. Nicely done.

And thank you, if you’ve read my longish comment this far and for the couple of minutes of your time!
Who slowed down the video setting speed to 0.75!! To listen to the Tech Specs!!
Bloody shame they did that.
I just paused and read it lol
I was normally watching on 1.5x, then when I switched to normal speed on specs part I thought the youtube just didn't react to my command because he was still going fast as hell :D
If i have to read something, i just pause it. By the time i've faffed about getting the settings up and slowed down the video i've already missed what i wanted to read.
Pause...read...play!
What a sensible great review! Glad to see such content in an ocean of juvenile reviews.
You sir, just earned my subscription! ✌️
amazing programme once again jonny. shows how you’re a true all rounder car dude 👏🏼
Really glad you enjoyed the vid Alex. Welcome to the Late Brake Show!
Kudos to Toyoda-san for continually chasing his passion which gifted us such precious gem of a car!
Really great content. I watched this, Carwow's and STG's videos on the same car and in all cases the driver's grinning made me want one. You nudged me to order one, and mine arrives in March! :-)
Hey Michael, that is excellent to hear first hand people taking the plunge. Obviously it was my vid that swayed you, right?
@@TheLateBrakeShow Obviously, it is you who should be getting the commission from Toyota! In all seriousness, I did order white based on your suggestion; you influenced me. So I guess that makes you a successful UA-cam influencer? :-)
Amazing video. That Blade Runner Vangelis style soundtrack in the end just nails the vision of me and my GR Yaris driving of to the sunset. Love it!
I'm so sad it's not available in North America. Rumour has it that we will get a (watered down) Corolla version. We will see.
Can you guys get a grey import ? Or do you have some silly bureaucratic rules.
NOOOOOOO ffs I’m done with the U.S man
@@realMaverickBuckley In Canada we would be able to import it in 2035 and the US 2045 lol.
I think Canada is going that way
Only hot hatches we have are the VW Golf range, Civic Si and R, the Velostar N and that's it. Hyundai pulled the Elantra GT. Ford pulled the Focus RS. Audi has pulled their hatches.
We still get small hot sedans, but they aren't the same.
@@keithcotter-reilly At least we get the next gen BRZ. Europe won't.
Johnny, you are doing a BRILLIANT job here on this stuff, keep it up mate, top notch and very compelling viewing.
As a US Citizen who loves small, light cars and rally hatchbacks in particular: damnit.
Now that Toyota's back in rallying I'm waiting for Honda to give us a 3 cylinder Fit Type R with a 9000 RPM redline... but then, we probably won't get that either.
Great job Jonny. The quality of your videos is getting to be ridiculously good. Love the channel.
This is a future classic. Collector's car. If Jay Leno doesn't already have one he will.
Superb Jonny, my attention was held. Thanks very much.Btw Sand S was excellent this week.
When this car was first revealed I really wanted one, now I really, really want one.
Nice one Jonny. That ‘standard Yaris’ leaving the ‘Foodies’ car park is just around the corner from where I live in Waterloo, Belgium! Keep up the good work!
I wish this thing was sold in Canada so I could get one used in 5-10 years time
For another 10k on the price.
I don't think it's gonna be used in 10 years. Might be 20 years later.
Well, if those rumours are true then NA market will get the GR Corolla instead.
It will be a collector's car and extremely hard to get 1 in 10 years time
In America were kinda screwed with hot hatches, I might get a civic si for fuel mileage and fun
More fantastic material for us - thanks Jonny. Big up Toyota for doing this project properly! I would have expected them to just create a mildly tarted-up regular Yaris, but no sir, this is the real deal. Could be the perfect car for funtime progress on Scottish B-roads?!
Great watch, I really like and want this car. keep up the good work!
What a great video and piece of journalistic entertainment! Really gave me a lock down smile. Thank you
Many thanks Phoebe!
That intro was so good I had to watch again! Lol
Much appeciated insight in the Toyota techical slides. Super refreshing to so someone sharing real engineering details vs. common UA-cam.
I'd love this car especially if I were in my 20s again even though I'd enjoy it now at 69.
I'm seriously thinking of getting one and I'm nearly 65 why not?
Hell yeah Craig go for it. I recently picked up a 2016 Chevy Spark EV to experience what an BEV is all about and which is a lot of fun but lots less $$ for a toy. That car will be a blast. We know age is just a number anyway.
@@billsmith810 Absolutely why drive a "boring" car just because your 60 odd, bet it felt strange the first time you drove it I have never been in an electric car, my problem is that I live in a small house with nowhere to charge one and our charging infrastructure is still pretty poor here in England.
@@cmpillred277 BEVs have torque everywhere, my little golf cart has 327lb ft worth. I own a 61 yr old home and when I was looking at having a new circuit run ifound out my electrical panel is out of date with electrical codes so I'm looking at more $$ down the road to add capabilities for a level 2 charger. I charge at 110v which takes a long time but since I'm retired I'm OK with it for now. I love little cars like the Yaris GR. Cheers!
The perfect Fiesta ST upgrade when you don't to be paying £200+ more a month for a boring S3 or Golf R
People who buy those are badge snobs. The cold hard facts are the Japanese can compete for far less. Wait until Hyundai releases their RN30 or whatever name they will call it. Mid engine, AWD. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
@@supercooled Partially agree but they are great cars if you want no compromises, wouldn't knock someone getting one when they commute via motorway
@@supercooled hyundai is korean😂
I wouldn't suggest they're boring. And built quality is far superior.
Golf R is very underwhelming. Its very quick but rock hard ride and doesnt sound of anything. Weird car to drive. Not my cup of tea at all
That is one polished, well executed homologation special. Another great car we’ll never get in the USA. I know it’s an apples
To oranges comparison but I felt the same way watching this as I did reading about the Nissan Sentra SE-R back in the day.
That sound! Oh my goodness!
Seriously, I love how you just carried on as the parachutist walked past! "People falling out of the sky!". Also, it'll be so cool when we can import this to the US in 25 years
Surely this is the spiritual successor to the Delta Integrale? 4wd turbo stuffed into compact cooking hatchback!
Absolutely loving your content Jonny. It's a treat to see a notification when you post a new vid. Keep up the good work.
Gordon Murray would approve of that steering wheel 👏
Grateful you've included the engineering points. It makes the car that much more special.
When we visited Belgium last year, I got a tiny brand new Kia Piccanta...that was perfect for carrying all my wife"s luggage while still allowing me to drive it down tiny alleys and park it on sidewalks in the old cities... I see the same small flexibility in this, but fast! I would totally own a tiny car like this if i lived in Europe or Asia.
Exactly, that's what people tend to forget. In most European cities / villages, you can't fit in when you drive a big heavy SUV.
Also, it's a Picanto (not Piccanta) :) Where did you go in Belgium?
@@QrisSx Antwerp, Brugge and Ghent...it was great! Most refreshingly delicious beer I've ever drank, nothing like it in the states! Absolutely gorgeous place to visit... Get a table on the square or by a river and enjoy the people/view...awesome!
What car do you own in the states?

This is such a brilliant review and video. Proper jounalism with lots of information. The parachute man. haha. Amazing.
Toyota, bring this to the US!!!
Future classic, for sure, looks great fun. Your videos are just getting better and better too Jonny!
If I didn't have a fiesta st and I wasn't poor I would buy one of these now 😂
I'd properly underestimated this car before seeing this, what amazing attention to detail.
On your Jimny comment, a mate of mine has ordered one of these, and he already has a new Suzuki Jimny that it'll be sitting next to in the garage haha
A question though, can the traction and stability control be defeated just with the button or do they stay on and just give you a longer leash to play in
Been waiting to see this since i saw the Toyota ad on instagram. What a car, Japanese manufacturers do things so well, yes the plastics are cheap, but you know its well made, strong and wont go wrong....excellent Jonny
Best intro to car review for some time. And a brilliant opening piece to camera. Take a bow Sir.
I noticed you didn’t title it I’ve ordered a Yaris GR with follow up videos 5 thinks I like / dislike, I’ve wrapped my Yaris GR then I’ve sold my Yaris GR 😂
I accidentally clicked the "trending" tab today and spotted that title 5 times....RIGHT as I write this on the right of this comment there is a video of shmee selling his Focus RS.... you have to choose the stuff you watch on youtube wisely
Easily the best review out there on the GR Yaris. Love the detail you added here. You even listed the total spot welds on it which I was weirdly wanting to know. Stellar work!
What happened to TRD? Why is it all GR now?
Still a great car though.
TRD is now slapped on some cosmetic kits on Toyotas in Southeast Asian market.
And on Tacoma TRD but that's about around the only good place the TRD name slapped on to.
@@AntoniusTyas there's a TRD Camry in North America too. And some Corolla Apex thing. both just versions of the base car with a body kit and some extra tuning
TuRD
TRD failed to win any races and is basically dead now.
It's as though you have created the language of enthusiasm, on the back of the featured SR Yaris. This video represents the only experience I will have of every man's dream car!
Is that beeping from the Toyota collision avoidance system?
What a mad little motor! This reminds me of the little 400 homologation sports bikes from the 90s. Tiny, not much power but proper race machinery and so cool!
"It's gripped!" 🤣
8:15 holy light speed batman! You sped up the most important part! Slow it down. I wanna hear/see the real specs. That’s what makes this car special.
You can slow UA-cam video's down, click on the settings icon by the fullscreen button. You can speed up or slow down a video. Good for watching pirated top gear thats running too fast.
@@R-Dub-Ya Exactly. Thank you.
You're spot on with the desirability. I have a modded ST, I can't afford 33 grand on a Yaris and the vehicle is woefully impractical and incompatible with my life at the moment - but the moment I saw this car I knew I wanted one. Congrats to all the people who are able to buy and enjoy one, I'll see you as you overtake me!
Why do we always have to speak about these things as if it’s somehow wrong to make or do something fun? The tone of any review or comment on an interesting product is always a rather reminiscent, if not mocking one.
Are we that beholden to government’s grip on our safety and rationality that something cool, interesting, unusual.. dare I say exciting, is somehow a dastardly thing?
Fantastic review, Jonny. You nailed it. Big time! And I want one badly....
So basically Yaris is better than Supra as a driver’s car.
Yes. If only America got these. We’re kinda stuck with the Ford Focus, fiesta and veloster N , golf gtis. We need something crazy like this here.
@@jcbnty3443 the new Fiesta is an awful car. Bland, no character. Nasty three cylinder engine that feels lumpy and inconsistent when driving spiritedly.
@@oddities-whatnot if it doesn’t have a hemi it’s not a real mans car.
@@jcbnty3443 Except there's no new Focus or Fiesta here anymore, although the Civic Type R is here now. Being that this car has awd, it seems to be more of a competitor to the WRX. If I were going fwd, I'd get the Veloster N, for awd, I'll stick with my STI for now.
Its just perfect
Fantastic, I've been waiting for this. Love that Toyota has gone full out for this. Wanted one since I first heard about it.
Toyota be like "what EV???" .. just going back to basics
"EV? We've got three whole cylinders to use!"
Not many people can make a 25-minute video interesting for 25 minutes but you can. Well done.
14:08 i think the 3 cylinder engines sound like V6 when rev'd lol
Nothing alike
I'm really enjoying all your videos. Sadly I can't afford to be a patron at the moment or else I definitely would. I really enjoyed the video where you walked round the car graveyard, it was a nice chilled video. Nice to see a face we've seen for years as well, makes me feel comfortable. Europe always gets cooler cars. The US gets all the bloated crossovers
we're getting the GR Corolla!! Same engine and drivetrain :D
The US has v8 Muscle cars
The production quality of these videos lately have been incredible! Loving the older gentleman and his parachute just casually waddling through the shot!
Mate you're constantly excellent at presenting and thanks a million for that. BUT! The production on your videos is just reaching Jedi levels. Furkun' quality!!👏👏👏
3 cylinders eh? My guess is they cut 1 cylinder off their best 2 litre. Bigger bore = bigger valves without the problem of shrouding and there's a heap less moving parts as well. Pretty clever really.
Oh you were in Fulking and then on A27!
Great video Jonny 👍🏻
