I will never forget the theater's reaction on opening night when Duel of Fates started playing during Yoda's battle with Sidious. The second those first couple of notes started, people started cheering. Mr. John Williams, this is how strong of an impact you've had on all of us.

@@auberginemanproductions1608 I was NOT expecting yoda to directly confront palpatine. In the original trilogy, the emperor seemed like some kind of untouchable figure. So when I was watching this movie for the first time and it cut from the anakin fight to yoda walking into palpatine's room (knowing he was the sith lord) I was like "oh crap they're going to fight, and actually have it on-screen instead of just alluding to it"
In the book, Yoda realized after he fell that he couldn't beat Sidious; the move where he tried redirecting the lightning into energy that would take them both out was his hail mary. Yoda had kept the Jedi following the same traditions for nearly a century, whereas thanks to the Rule of Two, the Sith had been evolving and growing stronger; with Sidious being the strongest Sith Lord this far. As it said in the novelization, "He just didn't have it. The brighter his light, the darker his shadow." Sidious is a sadist; he likes toying and tormenting his foes and prolonging their pain for as long as possible; such as when he's tossing platforms at Yoda, he seems more focused on just playing with him compared to actually trying to kill him. He doesn't get the opportunity to use his power often, so he's taking the time to enjoy it. When he got back up to the platform, he thought that it would be easy to kill Yoda by unleashing his true power, but it would be more painful simply letting Yoda live knowing that he failed the Order and failed to save the galaxy.
Believe it or not but originally the Choir wasn't supposed to be involved in the song cause John Williams thought it was "too much" but George Lucas later convinced him to keep it.
This was and always will be one of my favourite duels in all of Star Wars. It always gets overshadowed by Anakin vs Obi Wan, dont get me wrong that's just as good, but this scene never gets the recognition it deserves and is severely underrated. This really is THE Duel of the Fates, Master of the Darkness against the Master of the Light. If Sidious loses, the Jedi have a standing chance of survival. If Yoda loses, all hope for the Jedi is lost.
And that's why it ended in a stalemate. Since, the Jedi still has their chance since Yoda survived and thus will train Luke, but Sidious also managed to obtain Unlimited Power ruling the Empire.

In the Star Wars legend comics the force is kind of described as being actually alive and that major unbalances in the force actually cause the force itself to be wounded. That’s why an order 66 Yoda felt a great disturbance in the force. Or when the death star fire and blew up Ultron Obi-Wan Kenobi felt it. So I imagine whenever great battles that can turn the tide of the universe happen, the voices in duel of the fates is each side to the force fighting too or somewhat anticipating the power shift
Tbh one of the greatest theatre experiences in my life... sitting in that seat hearing that musical transition took me back to one of my first movies where the love for seeing movies in theaters really well began. Anyone else just have a quick flash back to Quigon, Obi-wan vs Maul fight too? Lol
