When I watched this special live, I was worried they would botch this. Dave Matthews was the PERFECT guy to do this song. What an absolute masterpiece.
At his SXM concert, Dave told how he came on stage for this and forgot to plug in his guitar. The producers wanted to re-record it again, but he said it was too good to try again. 😂
@jeremy Colbert, i coil don’t agree with you more man! I spend once a year going to both nights of there concerts and totally allowing my soul to sing and dance to each set they do. Dave and the band give me joy and happiness and when I see them once a year live I am in heaven, it is unreal. Bet you feel the same man, cheers!
In spite of the title, I'm glad and grateful that Dave always humbly brands himself as the Dave Matthews BAND. Just like Paul Simon on "Graceland," so much of his perfect sound here comes from the fact that he has always, ALWAYS surrounded himself by the very best live musicians onstage. I wish I knew the name of his bass player, who absolutely nailed Bakithi Kumalo's original groove, right down the the "reversed" lick at 3:40. That bass is so central to the joyful vibe of the song all the way through. There are only two ways to two a cover really well, especially of a Paul Simon song: to alter the arrangement and shape of a song so radically that you make the song your own (think Disturbed's "Sound of Silence"), or to absolutely nail the original shape of the song with perfect faithfulness in a way that still makes it interesting. Dave & Co. have done the latter here, which I think is one of the hardest things to do with an iconic song.
I rewatched this twice. You can feel the current of his joy, just being able to be there and perform. What a feel good sound, pure from times when rhythm drove our ancestors, creating ancient music, beats that transcend language, bringing humans to that pure place of, love and connection. We should all get high, and create things that sing from our ancestral spirit. A good day to all. Be well.
I'm just surprised that hardly *_ANYONE_* they showed in the audience either didn't know the lyrics or didn't sing along. I think I noticed like only *_THREE_* people sing along. Tragic.
DAVE MATHEWS!!!!! Got into his SA soul and let go!! This is what Paul Simon will do to ya...what an awesome performance...what an awesome show...can't stop watching...
So special to see the original bassist Bakithi Kumalo playing with Dave. I have a suspicion that it was Ladysmith Black Mambazo (the original singers on Paul Simons Graceland album) coming on at the end. I know Dave did play with them at Carnigie Hall at one stage.
If there were a short list of people who I would expect could pull off a live cover of this Paul Simon classic, you can bet your bottom dollar that Dave Matthews would be on that list. Maybe not at the top, since that boils down to personal preference. He knows how to deliver when it comes to songs with a funky beat and the lyrical structure of a song like this also works in his favor. A solid performance.
I was never a huge Paul Simon fan, but this album has grown on me over the years and Dave (who I am a Huge fan of) knocked this song out of the park as if it was made for him! Love it!
THE DAVE MATHEWS BAND IS BEING FINALLY INDUCTED IN TO ROCK AND ROLLHALL OF FAME 2924🎉❤😊 SO WELL DESERVED!!!!!!!!!!
Just about the time I think we are all doomed, this song pops up and gives me a little hope.
This song is so fitting for Dave’s sound. He owned this cover and performed it like the song originated with his band
I totally agree!!
Dave Matthews did justice to this big hit.
Dave kills a lot of covers especially in the mid. nineties live. Amazing!!!
CRUSHED. IT. Absolute perfection.
@Legend if you haven't seen the version of Burning Down the House posted by "Dave Matthews Band Argentina," highly recommend!
Absolutely 💯 This is one of those songs that ONLY Dave could pull off covering! He nailed it! 👏
And Ants Marching!
Thank you God for Paul Simon and Dave Matthews.
DAMN DAVE......shoulda kept it going for another 10 minutes.....Grammy's were jumpin'
Daves dancing is my favorite thing ever 🤣
Always! His creative expression extension. ❤
He totally nailed this. His natural timbre brings such a different feel to this song.
I doesn't hurt that he is also South African.
Dave's dancing is WILD 😂😂
Great performance
Love his crazy dancing!
The man can move. I work about his well being but he pulled it off
And this is why Dave is the best.
It’s like he was born to sing this.
When I watched this special live, I was worried they would botch this.

Our boy used every inch of his lungs to get through this and killed it.
Who is here after Stern interview? He killed it btw (as usual)
That whole paul simon album is one of my favorites ever
if you haven't already listen to Rhythm of the Saints, underrated masterpiece
💯 - my 10 and 12 year old are into it too!
Amazing as always! I saw him live in Virginia Beach more than 20 years ago. He has just gotten better and better! Love him forever!!!
Dave killed this. I hope DMB do this cover this summer.
Eh, I've been to 17DMB shows, that and Tom Petty were my summer concerts. Not really interested anymore, other than DMB was high school music for me 😊

What is adult music??
Thats a lot of players to bring on the road to cover one song
he pulled out Paul Simons Late in the Evening this summer😊
Dave freaked that shit like it was his own song. Dope.
Dave always the right amounts of cool and good
Dave Matthews should be in the next eurovison
I love his version of sledgehammer, burning down the house and now this ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Check out their cover of T"ime of the Season" (Zombies). Amazing stuff!
Hot damn that was good.
Wait, what????
Pretty epic worlds-collide moment here
Dope…
If y’all haven’t seen Dave & the fam live
Do it!!! Do it..
At the Gorge, baby!
I love watching Dave sings cover you know he likes
Nailed it!
Dude is just having a straight-up blast covering this song I bet it was a song he liked
I can't stop watching this over and over again! Dave is the only choice to have honored him on this particular song! Just amazing
What is funny is he wanted to do a different song! They asked him to do this one and they were right.
Awesome, Just awesome
South African excellence right there
Dave Matthews absolutely crushed this song. The man did Paul Simon proud that's for sure. Love it!!!
Thank God I came across this.

It’s Balithi Kumalo performing here. None of Dave’s band is on stage for this performance.
However - the bassist in DMB is Stefan Lessard
I think there are two bassists here…but Kumalo does the high bit and the solo.
I think this proves that Mr. Khumalo is literally the only player alive who play the lick properly
He is the best!!
❤️❤️❤️Dave Matthews❤️❤️❤️
Oh my.....Dave Matthews can do no wrong.
Holy crap! Amazing
Oh hell yes! I've loved this song & DMB forever, so cool to hear this cover!!!!!!!❤😍🥰
Dave's performance was the BEST part of the show ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I love how versatile and committed Tom Hanks is to this performance… playing Dave Matthews impersonating Paul Simon. And he NAILS it!
This really fits Dave. Really suits

Here after his Stern interview.
Gave me chills. Don’t know why?
This song has always slayed. Cool to see DM do a version of it.

Great cover by DMB
Wonderful.
❤
Can anyone explain why I love this song so much??
Thank you
A bit of full circle here. Graceland was recorded in and inspired by South Africa. Dave Matthews is….South African by birth.
Wow. Great cover by Dave. Fun song.
DMB should totally cover this as part of their sets. I've thought this for years, but now I'm certain!
What an excellent performance .
