Ive used the sand seal on both my buids so far. It seems a good idea considering where we live. But I'll say the first one went on a new 74mm crank from AA and it fit like a glove. The second one went on an old 69mm polished crank and that one was a pain to get set correctly.

Just to share my experience which is mainly offroad. When i tried my first sand seal it was a push in type. I could never get it to not leak. This was in a very well used engine with a stock crank. I just rebuilt the same engine but this time I'm starting off with CB's serpentine belt kit which includes a sand seal. It's not a press fit type either, but it is holding so far. I don't have any miles on it so we'll see. I think maybe it has to do with parts not mating up like they should. I'm paying a lot more attention these days too.

Yeah I'm with ya on the sand seal, only if necessary. And the time involved to build a motor correctly is why I do my own work.

I never use them for street cars. If you’re going on the dunes it is a different story.

I don't care for sand seals. I guess if you are running the dunes it might be useful. I've rebuilt a sand sealed engine, and the replacement ones didn't fit = spun in the case snout 😠. Removed and put in a stock pulley and no problem for the client - didn't leak or have any other problems.
