I’m a female DIYer. Just finished skim coating my first popcorn ceiling and torn drywall walls. Actually it was my first skim coat ever. I watched several of your videos and thought “if he can do it, I can do it”. I got the ceiling done in two coats but probably should have gone for 3. The walls were two coats as well. One thing I learned was to make sure you don’t put the second coat on too thick or you will end up with bubble holes. Had to go back with regular spackle and fill the holes then wet sand them smooth. It worked great though. So proud of myself. Saved me from having to drywall the entire room. Paul, you’re videos are the best.

I'm a DIYer because my dad has always taught me to do things for myself. Save money in the long run too. i like how you thoroughly explain what you are doing while you are doing it. I'm currently working on my bathroom and just did a skim coat on one of my walls and i must say i did a good job for it being my first time skim coating. I've learned alot from your videos.

You have helped me a lot. My brother who passed in 2013 was a master. I watched him do this in my home. Now I have to complete some projects alone, namely the bathroom ceiling, and you’ve filled the knowledge void. I’m pretty skilled myself, (he told me) but I often need a how to boost before I start.

Paul, thank you once again for your videos. I'm a DIYer and one room that I did prior to watching your videos, repaired cracks returned within 3 weeks. The next room, after watching, went much quicker and cracks have not returned (2 months out now). I'm about to do a painted popcorn ceiling in our stairwell to the basement this week. This is a test to prove I can, so my wife will give me the go ahead to smooth the ceilings in the rest of the house. Thanks to your guidance, I have the confidence that I'll get it done and looking amazing!

We've been going back and forth on what to do with our heavily popcorned ceilings. We have painted it in the past. I've watched several videos on skim coating and this is by far the best teaching guide to my problem. I'm excited to get started! After the ceiling, we're going to skim coat all the walls -- over the years, you can see the tape. Thank you so much!

I wish I had seen your video last October! I paid thousands for my painted over popcorn from 1980 to be sanded, replastered and repainted in four areas. The unprofessional goons that did it sanded a ceiling WITHOUT my permission and just left it torn up. (I was in a forensics conference so I couldn't just call right back.). They left my house so dirty and didn't clean a thing! I ran into a reputable restorer, (actually he's quite famous and sought after in the area I was in) an he already knew my story and said he would skim coat. He said with patience, I could even do it. After watching your video, I'm going to give it a try! I'm not that handy...at all but you did such a good job, I think I can do it!

If it hasn’t been painted? You might be better off scraping it. Unless it was applied before 1980. Then you’ll want to get it tested for asbestos. I hope this helps. -Paul

I bought a duplex built in the 60's. Started scraping the painted over popcorn ceilings. That sucked. Then switched to orbital sander with 80 grit to smooth the old stuff out. After watching this I think I'll just apply a couple skim coats to the rest of the house and forget the extra work and mess. The asbestos possibility kinda worries me though. Thanks for the tips!

I did two identical size rooms two different ways. One I scrapped and skimmed. The other I installed 3/8"--4×10's of drywall right over the ceiling. From a cost and time perspective, handsdown, drywall was cheaper, less effort and much quicker. Losing 3/8" from ceiling height was unnoticeable.
Option 3 would be to remove the entire ceiling, install 1 x3 furring strips to the joists, install new 1/2" drywall. You may of may not have to use cedar shims between the fur strip and joist to ensure a level flat ceiling, otherwise your beveled butt joints won't be level for a perfect tape/mud joint. Professional tapers use 3 thin coats for a seamless joint requiring very little if any sanding. I am confident Paul would agree.
Otherwise, a good skim coat video Paul. Very thorough and obviously a professional tradesman👍.

I've got a full role model in Montgomery that needs a way too expensive do-over for what it's worth and seeing as how it's a bathroom I just think a good solid skin coat will be a lot better than popcorn cuz I'm pretty sure it will hold less moisture. By the way I'm so glad you said that thing about asbestos because I work in extremely old houses all the time and I never thought about the popcorn ceiling and the drywall having asbestos in them when I cut so that being said you pretty much just saved my life cuz this will be my first extremely old house and every other house I'll be working on in the future will be the same age roughly you definitely got my subscription today

I just did my first skim coat ever in the popcorn ceiling in my bathroom. It takes some practice with putting the pressure in the correct side of the taping knife but once you get the hang of it, it’s awesome. You’ll be amazed at the results. Since it was my first I had to do quite a bit of sanding. I used an LED head light with all other lights off and was able to see where it needed to be sanded perfectly. Paul’s not kidding when he says LEDs are the best light to use. Hope you enjoy the results you get. Good luck.

Thanks to you I've removed all my popcorn ceilings and did knock down. Came out great. Note; When I wet the popcorn I eventually ditched the sprayer and used the garden hose. Much faster and doesn't soak it too much if your careful.

House I take care of had a leaky toilet last year. Then just recently the sink in the same bathroom had a leak. The two combined leaks caused the kitchen ceiling to collapse in a three by four foot area. I scraped down everything that was loose, feathered the edges, covered up all the water stains with Stain blocker and filled the void with joint compound. Today I’m going to knock down all the peaks with a scraper and get my next coat up, as best to my ability.

4 years late, but thanks for the video. I'm doing my first ceiling skim coat, painted 1980s popcorn ceiling. I was very unsuccessful with my first coat, so much lift off, I'm going to be sanding for the rest of my life. I'm a short woman, short arms, step ladder, new DIYer, and I don't seem to have the strength to control a wide knife, 10" and it all spills out the edges of the knife into my hair, the floor, the ladder, the windows. I hope that I get better with practice. I've got 1100 sq ft left to go.

Hi, Paul. I’m a DIY-er in my first home. I am working towards covering the textured ceiling in one of my bathrooms, a very small space. I’ve watched several of your skim coating videos and tried to get the same or similar products as you recommend. The other day, I did my first layer of skim coat, but I kept getting lines (chatter) from my skim coat knife all across the ceiling. I don’t know what I did wrong. I tried mixing the skim coat to a “creamy yogurt” consistency, as you recommend. I tried initially applying the skim coat with a paint roller, like your trick and smoothing with a 24” knife. I had lines (chatter) whatever I tried, so I tried my 6” knife to see if it would help, but it did not, unfortunately. I’d appreciate any advice you have. Your videos have been incredibly helpful and informative - thank you!

I have a plaster ceiling with the original, probably oil and lead base, paint. Do I need to prep the ceiling before skim coating with general purpose mud? Should I paint it first with a shellac based primer, clean it? Thanks and I enjoy your videos. You make it seem so easy.

If you skim coat over the popcorn 2 times can you use a hopper gun to apply knockdown texture to it afterwards? and how long should we wait before doing as such?

Hi Paul, question: I have a very old (early 70s) very smoked stained dirty popcorn ceiling in my basement, never been painted, also has glitter in it..what is the best way to either skim coat or remove the popcorn? Thank you for your very informative videos..Sheryl Murray

Doing a skim coat to smooth out a popcorn ceiling of almost exactly the same texture as this one. But being an fairly sedentary old geezer, I'm glad mine is only a 25 sq. ft. half bath! 😂 I expect I'll still feel it for a couple days after. Appreciate the brief comment @ 3:30 regarding when to use the green vs blue lid compound.

Hi Paul. I am skim coating my basement hallway which has textured walls and ceiling. House was made in 1957. I just finished sanding the one wall to lower the bumps a bit before coating. Do tou think I should not be doing that because of asbestos or lead?? Thank you.

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  3 роки тому +1

There’s definitely potential with the home being built in 1957. You would be better off not sanding any of the old walls or ceilings just in case. If you go to the description of this video I have a link to my Amazon store where I sell easy to use test kits for lead and asbestos. I hope this helps. -Paul

Not sure if I missed it, but there is no need to prime a painted popcorn ceiling right? Just go straight to skim coating?

Hello, I’m trying to decide if skim coating is the right course of action for my old tiled walls. There’re particle board like tiles and I’d like the smooth ceiling look. Would skim coating cover/join each crevice between the tiles?

A lot of good tips in this video. That ceiling would take me a good 4 hours to do and I'd have to take a week off to recover afterwards. Sucks to be old.😀😀

Hi Paul. We are remodeling a mid century modern house in the southwest. I would like to use a smooth texture for the walls. Is this a proper texture for a mcm design? Also, should the ceiling also be smooth? Currently it is orange peel. Thank you so much. Your videos are a great tool for us do it yourselfers. Thank you.
