  • The Crystal Cathedral was made famous by Rev. Robert Schuller and home to the Hour of Power  - TV's most watched religious show during the 1980s. With Schuller's megawatt smile and positive-thinking preaching, the ministry played a key role in American Evangelical Christianity, culture, and even touched on world politics.
But fast-forward to 2024, and the Crystal Cathedral has been uprooted from its Protestant roots and now transformed into a CATHOLIC Cathedral  - rebranded as the Christ Cathedral.
    So what happened?!?
For the 7th church visit during this third round of 52in52, we'll take look into the rise of Robert Schuller's legacy, the fall of his preaching empire, and how the ramifications of the Vietnam War has transformed this unique campus.

Would you consider crunching the numbers for St. Jude to help people visualize a little better? (IE: $12k helps 3 children and their families for 3 months on average). I have totally made up those exact numbers, but it's just an idea of how one may visualize it.

Thank you for doing this visit! I was born in Orange, CA, and lived in Garden Grove for 12 years. My parents have LDS ancestors dating back to pioneer times, so I only attended LDS services in Garden Grove, but I remember thinking the Crystal Cathedral was beautiful.

This vlog is really interesting. I love your 52 churches and donating to St. Jude hospital.. I donated to your fundraiser instead of how I usually donate. :) At first I thought this vlog would be about the Wayfarers Chapel, also known as "The Glass Church,"in Rancho Palos Verdes. I wish you could have done a vlog about that little chapel, but it is sliding down the mountain. You would love that little chapel. About 32 years ago my daughter attended an Easter program in it when my daughter and I were visiting a Japanese friend of mine and we could not find a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It was a very different type of service than I was used to and some of us had to stand in the back because so many people were there. They acted out the Last Supper. Peter was a woman. They served your choice of grape juice or wine to the congregation during the sacrament. It would have been a place you would like. This website shows pictures of it: ktla.com/news/california/famed-southern-california-chapel-closes-due-to-shifting-land/

When I was growing up in the 60's, my grandmother lived in a town near Garden Grove. I remember at least twice when our family drove to Garden Grove to attend the "drive-in" church there. Seeing the video of the walls opening up so the people in the parking lot could see the preacher and the choir certainly brought back memories! And, yes, the parking lot looked exactly like a drive-in parking lot complete with tilted up parking spaces and speakers to hang on the window of our car. As we drove in they handed us programs with the words of the hymns printed in them. When it came for collection time, ushers from the church went from car to car to collect the donations. I found it fascinating as a child. At age 19 I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 🙂

Welcome to the restored Church of Jesus Christ!
I was born in SoCal and grew up a few miles north of this place 1951 to mid-1970. I remember his days in the Orange Drive In. They used to have Nativity displays with live animals for their Christmas services, reservations required.
There are many Vietnamese families in Orange County from the migration during the waning days of Viet Nam. They brought their Catholicism with them and passed it to their progeny.

My grandmother joined the LDS church when my mom did in the late 70’s but she mainly joined to keep tabs on my mom to make sure she wasn’t joining a cult. She soon realized the LDS church was true, however she would still watch ‘The Hour of Power’ with Robert Schuler and the 700 club which was what she considered going to church before. She lived with our family after my father’s death and my grandfather’s death. She died of colon cancer and wasn’t in good health and in pain for years so I can’t blame her for not going to church on a regular basis. I remember watching these shows with her and thinking how opulent the crystal cathedral was.

It's sad that Rev. Robert Schuller couldn't continue his legacy, but I am thrilled that the Archdiocese of Orange was able to purchase the building and continue it as a place of worship for the growing Catholic community in Orange County. I had to laugh at how shocked you were that the congregation is no longer lily white as it appeared on television during Schuller's day. Orange County has changed quite a bit since those days, and you'll find a variety of ethnicities in all Catholic Churches.

every Church should be a Catholic Church. Why??? because what Jesus left us isnt anything like what modern day Protestantism is. Its so watered down and has multiple spinoffs of spinoffs. Like Jehovah's witnesses, Mormons, baptists, Lutherans , and on and on and on. Jesus didnt leave us a endless amount of denominations. He prayed that we would all be one. The holy Mass is true worship. Singing, rock band music, raising hands alter calls and more are NOT worship. There is a saying "To be steeped in history is to cease to be Protestant". So true!.
